Sonographer Work Summary

Wilsonville OR ultrasound tech with patientThere are several acceptable titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also called sonogram techs, diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers) and ultrasound technologists. Regardless of name, they all have the same primary job function, which is to perform diagnostic ultrasound techniques on patients. Even though a number of techs work as generalists there are specializations within the field, for instance in cardiology and pediatrics. Most practice in Wilsonville OR hospitals, clinics, outpatient diagnostic imaging centers and even private practices. Common daily work functions of a sonogram tech can involve:

  • Maintaining records of patient medical histories and specifics of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Readying the ultrasound machines for use and then cleaning and re-calibrating them
  • Transferring patients to treatment rooms and making them comfortable
  • Operating equipment while minimizing patient exposure to sound waves
  • Assessing results and determining need for supplemental testing

Sonographers must frequently evaluate the safety and performance of their machines. They also must adhere to a high ethical standard and code of conduct as health practitioners. In order to maintain that level of professionalism and remain up to date with medical knowledge, they are required to enroll in continuing education training on an ongoing basis.

Ultrasound Tech Degrees Offered

Wilsonville OR ultrasound technician performing sonographySonogram tech enrollees have the opportunity to earn either an Associate or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will typically take about 18 months to 2 years to finish dependent on the course load and program. A Bachelor’s Degree will require more time at up to 4 years to complete. Another alternative for individuals who have previously earned a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have received a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a relevant health field, you can enroll in a certificate program that will require just 12 to 18 months to finish. Something to consider is that the majority of sonographer colleges do have a clinical training component as a portion of their course of study. It can often be fulfilled by participating in an internship program which many colleges set up with Wilsonville OR clinics and hospitals. After you have graduated from any of the degree or certificate programs, you will then have to comply with the certification or licensing requirements in Oregon or whichever state you choose to practice in.

Sonogram Tech Online Programs

student attending online sonography class in Wilsonville ORAs previously mentioned, virtually all ultrasound technician schools have a clinical component to their programs. So while you can obtain a certificate or degree online, a significant part of the training will be either held in an on campus lab or at an approved off campus medical care provider. Clinical training can often be satisfied through an internship at a local Wilsonville OR hospital, outpatient clinic or family practice. However the remainder of the classes and training may be attended online in your Wilsonville home. This is especially convenient for those individuals that keep working while obtaining their degrees. Plus online colleges are many times less expensive than traditional alternatives. Expenses for study materials and commuting can be lessened as well. But just as with every sonography program you are considering, verify that the online school you choose is accredited. Among the most highly respected accrediting agencies is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is particularly crucial for certification, licensing and job placement (more on accreditation later). So if you are dedicated enough to attend classes outside of the classroom in the convenience of your own home, then an online school could be the right option for you.

Topics to Ask Ultrasound Technician Colleges

Questions to ask Wilsonville OR ultrasound technician schoolsOnce you have decided on the type of certificate or degree that you would like to earn, you can start the process of assessing and comparing ultrasound technician schools. You may first want to decide whether you would rather attend classes online or commute to a school campus in the Wilsonville OR area. Naturally location will be significant if you choose the latter, and the price of tuition no doubt will be an initial qualifier as well. But there are additional things that you must also take into account, for instance if the colleges are accredited and if they sponsor internship programs. So in order to complete your due diligence so that you can arrive at your final selection, following are several questions that you need ask each ultrasound tech school before deciding.

Are the Ultrasound Tech Schools Accredited? A large number of sonogram tech colleges have obtained some type of accreditation, whether national or regional. However, it’s still imperative to confirm that the school and program are accredited. One of the most highly respected accrediting organizations in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Schools receiving accreditation from the JRC-DMS have undergone a detailed evaluation of their instructors and course materials. If the program is online it may also earn accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which focuses on distance or online education. All accrediting agencies should be recognized by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Besides ensuring a superior education, accreditation will also assist in acquiring financial aid and student loans, which are many times not offered for non-accredited schools. Accreditation might also be a pre-requisite for certification and licensing as required. And a number of Wilsonville OR health facilities will only hire graduates of an accredited program for entry level jobs.

Are Internships Offered? Find out if the sonogram tech colleges you are evaluating have associations with Wilsonville OR clinics or hospitals for internship programs. Internships are not only a terrific way to receive practical training in a clinical environment, they are also a way to fulfill the clinical training requirement for most programs. As a secondary benefit, they can help students and graduates develop professional connections in the Wilsonville health care community and help with job placement.

Is Job Placement Help offered? You will probably want to secure employment quickly after graduation, but finding that first job in a new profession can be difficult without assistance. Ask if the sonographer programs you are assessing have job placement programs and what their success rates are. High and rapid placement rates are an excellent sign that the schools have large networks and good relationships with Oregon healthcare employers. It also corroborates that their graduates are highly regarded and sought after.

Where is the Program Located? For a lot of students, the school they choose will have to be within driving distance of their Wilsonville OR home. Individuals who have decided to attend online classes naturally will not have to trouble themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of local internships will be of importance. One thing to bear in mind is that if you choose to enroll in a program that is out of state or perhaps out of your local area, you may have to pay a higher tuition. State colleges commonly charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges commonly charge a higher tuition to those students that live outside of their districts.

What Size are the Classes ? Unless you are the sort of person that likes to sit way in the back of class or hide in the crowd, you will probably want a smaller class size. Small classes permit more individual participation and one-on-one instruction. Ask the schools you are looking at what the typical student to teacher ratio is for their classrooms. If practical you may prefer to sit in on one or more classes before making your ultimate decision. This will also give you an opportunity to talk with several of the students and instructors to get their perspectives regarding the ultrasound tech program as well.

Does the College Accommodate your Schedule? And last you must verify that the ultrasound tech  college you finally select can furnish the class schedule you need. This is particularly important if you decide to continue working while you attend classes. If you need to schedule night or weekend classes in the Wilsonville OR area, confirm that they are available. If you can only attend part-time, verify if that is an option and how many courses or credit hours you would have to enroll in. Also, learn what the procedure is for making up any classes that you might miss because of illness, work or family emergencies.
