Sonographer Job Summary

Artemas PA ultrasound tech with patientThere are various professional titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also referred to as ultrasound technologists, sonogram techs, and diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers). No matter what their title is, they all have the same basic job description, which is to carry out diagnostic ultrasound testing on patients. Although a number of techs work as generalists there are specializations within the field, for instance in pediatrics and cardiology. The majority work in Artemas PA clinics, hospitals, private practices or outpatient diagnostic imaging centers. Standard daily work tasks of a sonogram technician may involve:

  • Preserving records of patient medical histories and specifics of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Readying the ultrasound machines for testing and then sterilizing and re-calibrating them
  • Moving patients to treatment rooms and ensuring their comfort
  • Using equipment while limiting patient exposure to sound waves
  • Reviewing the results and determining necessity for supplemental testing

Ultrasound techs must routinely evaluate the safety and performance of their equipment. They also are held to a high ethical standard and code of conduct as medical practitioners. In order to maintain that level of professionalism and remain current with medical knowledge, they are mandated to complete continuing education courses on a regular basis.

Ultrasound Technician Degree Programs Offered

Artemas PA ultrasound technician performing sonographySonogram technician enrollees have the option to acquire either an Associate Degree or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will typically take about 18 months to 2 years to accomplish dependent on the program and class load. A Bachelor’s Degree will take longer at up to four years to finish. Another alternative for those who have already earned a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have earned a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a related health sector, you can enroll in a certificate program that will take only 12 to 18 months to complete. Something to bear in mind is that the majority of ultrasound technician programs do have a clinical training element as part of their course of study. It can often be satisfied by participating in an internship program which numerous schools set up through Artemas PA hospitals and clinics. When you have graduated from one of the degree or certificate programs, you will then have to satisfy the licensing or certification requirements in Pennsylvania or whatever state you elect to work in.

Ultrasound Technician Online Schools

student attending online sonography class in Artemas PAAs earlier discussed, virtually all ultrasound tech schools have a clinical component to their programs. So although you can receive a certificate or degree online, a significant part of the training will be either carried out in an on campus lab or at an approved off campus facility. Clinical training can often be fulfilled by means of an internship at a local Artemas PA hospital, outpatient clinic or private practice. But the rest of the training and classes may be accessed online in your Artemas home. This is particularly convenient for those students that keep working while obtaining their degrees. Plus online colleges are often less costly than traditional options. Costs for study materials and commuting can be reduced also. But just as with any sonography program you are looking at, confirm that the online program you select is accredited. One of the most highly respected accrediting agencies is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is especially significant for licensing, certification and job placement (more on accreditation later). So if you are disciplined enough to learn outside of the classroom in the comfort of your own home, then an online school may be the ideal choice for you.

Topics to Ask Sonogram Tech Schools

Questions to ask Artemas PA ultrasound technician schoolsAfter you have decided on the type of certificate or degree that you would like to obtain, you can begin the procedure of assessing and comparing sonogram tech schools. You may first want to choose whether you would rather attend classes online or travel to a college campus in the Artemas PA area. Obviously location will be important if you decide on the latter, and the cost of tuition no doubt will be an initial qualification as well. But there are other things that you must also take into account, for instance if the schools are accredited and if they provide internship programs. Therefore in order to complete your due diligence so that you can make your final selection, below are a few questions that you may want to ask each sonographer program prior to making a decision.

Are the Sonogram Technician Colleges Accredited? The majority of ultrasound tech colleges have obtained some form of accreditation, whether regional or national. Nevertheless, it’s still important to make sure that the program and school are accredited. One of the most highly respected accrediting organizations in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Schools earning accreditation from the JRC-DMS have gone through a detailed review of their instructors and course materials. If the college is online it might also receive accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which targets online or distance education. All accrediting organizations should be recognized by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Besides guaranteeing a premium education, accreditation will also assist in acquiring financial aid and student loans, which are often not offered for non-accredited colleges. Accreditation might also be a pre-requisite for licensing and certification as required. And numerous Artemas PA health facilities will only hire a graduate of an accredited college for entry level openings.

Are Internship Programs Sponsored? Inquire if the ultrasound technician programs you are assessing have partnerships with Artemas PA hospitals or clinics for internship programs. Internships are not only a great way to obtain practical experience in a clinical environment, they are additionally a means to fulfill the clinical training requirement for the majority of programs. As an ancillary benefit, they can help students and graduates develop professional relationships in the Artemas healthcare community and assist with obtaining employment.

Is Job Placement Assistance available? You will probably wish to secure employment quickly after graduating, but finding that first job in a new field can be difficult without assistance. Find out if the sonographer schools you are interviewing have job assistance programs and what their placement rates are. Rapid and high placement rates are a good sign that the schools have large networks and great relationships with Pennsylvania healthcare employers. It also confirms that their students are well regarded and sought after.

Where is the School Located? For a number of students, the school they decide on will need to be within commuting distance of their Artemas PA residence. Individuals who have opted to attend online classes naturally will not have to concern themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of area internships will be of concern. One thing to keep in mind is that if you choose to enroll in a college that is out of state or perhaps out of your local area, you may be required to pay a higher tuition. State colleges usually charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges normally charge a higher tuition to those students that don’t reside within their districts.

What are the Class Sizes ? Unless you are the type of person that likes to sit way in the back of class or hide in the crowd, you will likely want a small class size. Smaller classes permit more individual participation and one-on-one instruction. Ask the colleges you are considering what the average student to teacher ratio is for their classes. If practical you may want to sit in on one or more classes before making your final determination. This will also give you a chance to speak with some of the students and instructors to get their perspectives regarding the ultrasound tech program also.

Does the School Accommodate your Schedule? And last you need to verify that the sonographer  college you ultimately pick can offer the class schedule you need. This is particularly essential if you opt to continue working while you attend classes. If you must schedule evening or weekend classes in the Artemas PA area, make sure that they are offered. If you can only enroll on a part-time basis, check if that is an alternative and how many credit hours or courses you would have to carry. Also, ask what the protocol is for making up any classes that you may miss due to work, illness or family obligations.

    Spafford (band)

Spafford is an American jam band that blends genres of rock, funk, jazz, reggae, ska, and electro-pop. Members Brian Moss (guitar/vocals) and Jordan Fairless (bass/vocals) formed Spafford in Prescott, Arizona on New Year's Eve in 2009. Andrew “Red” Johnson (keys/vocals) joined Moss and Fairless after meeting the duo at an open mic night in Prescott. Cameron Laforest (drums/percussion/vocals) was the last addition of this current formation until Spafford and Cam went their separate ways on 4/16/19. Spafford’s previous drummer, Nick Tkachyk, returned to the band at this point. The group self-releases their music, many of which are soundboard recordings of their live shows.

Spafford's sound is the product of the different songwriters and singers in the band.[1] The band uses an improvisational style to transition between the songs in their sets of live music,[2] selecting diverse covers.[3] Spafford tours across the U.S., and each of their shows features a different setlist and approach to each song they play.[4] Through their tours, archives, and live video recordings, the band has a fan base of "Spaffnerds" who travel to see the band and maintain an online community surrounding its shows.[5] The band provide live streams and access to recordings of their shows on their website.[6]

Brian Moss and Jordan Fairless are the founding members of Spafford. They both played open mic nights at Coyote Joe's in Prescott, Arizona, in 2008. At the time, Moss played guitar and Fairless was the percussionist. In 2010, Mike Kreidel (2010-2011) became Spafford's drummer, and Fairless took on bass guitar. The first keyboard player was Jonathan Hust (2010-2011).[7] In 2011, Red Johnson joined Spafford, and Cameron Laforest became Spafford's drummer, replacing Nick Tkachyk (2011-2017), in 2017,[8] firming up the band's current membership. Nick returned to the band in the spring of 2019.[9]
