Sonographer Work Description

Ashville PA ultrasound tech with patientThere are several professional titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also called sonogram techs, diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers) and ultrasound technologists. No matter what their title is, they all have the same basic job function, which is to implement diagnostic ultrasound techniques on patients. Even though a number of techs practice as generalists there are specializations within the profession, for instance in cardiology and pediatrics. Most work in Ashville PA hospitals, clinics, outpatient diagnostic imaging centers and even private practices. Common daily work duties of a sonogram tech can consist of:

  • Maintaining records of patient case histories and specifics of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Readying the ultrasound machines for testing and then sterilizing and recalibrating them
  • Moving patients to treatment rooms and making them comfortable
  • Using equipment while limiting patient exposure to sound waves
  • Reviewing the results and identifying necessity for supplemental testing

Ultrasound techs must frequently evaluate the performance and safety of their equipment. They also must adhere to a high professional standard and code of conduct as medical practitioners. In order to maintain that level of professionalism and stay current with medical knowledge, they are mandated to enroll in continuing education training on a regular basis.

Ultrasound Technician Degree Programs Offered

Ashville PA ultrasound technician performing sonographyUltrasound technician students have the choice to earn either an Associate Degree or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will typically involve around 18 months to 2 years to finish based upon the course load and program. A Bachelor’s Degree will take longer at up to 4 years to finish. Another alternative for individuals who have previously obtained a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have received a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a related medical sector, you can instead choose a certificate program that will require only 12 to 18 months to finish. Something to bear in mind is that most sonographer schools do have a clinical training component as a portion of their course of study. It can often be fulfilled by entering into an internship program which many colleges organize with Ashville PA clinics and hospitals. After you have graduated from any of the certificate or degree programs, you will then need to satisfy the certification or licensing prerequisites in Pennsylvania or whichever state you choose to work in.

Online Sonogram Tech Programs

So although you can earn a certificate or degree online, a significant portion of the training will be either carried out in an on campus laboratory or at an approved off campus facility. Practical training can often be satisfied by means of an internship at a local Ashville PA hospital, outpatient clinic or private practice. But the remainder of the classes and training may be attended online in your Ashville home. This is particularly beneficial for those individuals that continue working while getting their degrees. In addition online programs are frequently more affordable than traditional options. Costs for commuting and study materials may be reduced also. But just as with any ultrasound tech college you are considering, verify that the online school you ultimately pick is accredited. One of the most highly regarded accrediting agencies is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is especially crucial for certification, licensing and finding employment (more on accreditation later). So if you are dedicated enough to learn away from the classroom in the comfort of your own home, then an online degree could be the ideal choice for you.

Are the Ultrasound Technician Programs Accredited? A large number of ultrasound tech schools have obtained some type of accreditation, whether regional or national. However, it’s still imperative to make sure that the program and school are accredited. Among the most highly regarded accrediting organizations in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Schools obtaining accreditation from the JRC-DMS have gone through a detailed review of their teachers and educational materials. If the college is online it might also obtain accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which focuses on distance or online education. All accrediting organizations should be recognized by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Along with ensuring a premium education, accreditation will also help in getting financial assistance and student loans, which are many times not available for non-accredited schools. Accreditation can also be a pre-requisite for licensing and certification as required. And numerous Ashville PA employers will only hire a graduate of an accredited college for entry level jobs.

Are Internship Programs Sponsored? Inquire if the sonogram technician schools you are interested in have partnerships with Ashville PA clinics or hospitals for internship programs. Not only are internships a great manner to get hands on training in a clinical setting, they are additionally a way to fulfill the clinical training requirement for the majority of programs. It also corroborates that their students are highly regarded and in demand.

Where is the School Located? For a lot of students, the school they select will have to be within commuting distance of their Ashville PA home. Students who have chosen to attend online classes naturally will not have to concern themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of area internships will be of concern. Something to consider is that if you choose to enroll in a school that is out of state or perhaps out of your local area, you may be required to pay a higher tuition. State colleges typically charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges typically charge a higher tuition for those students that don’t reside within their districts.

What are the Class Sizes ? Unless you are the type of student that prefers to sit far in the back of class or hide in the crowd, you will undoubtedly prefer a smaller class size. Smaller classes allow for more individual participation and personalized instruction. Ask the colleges you are looking at what the typical student to teacher ratio is for their classes. If practical you may prefer to monitor one or more classes before making your final determination. This will also give you an opportunity to talk with some of the students and instructors to get their perspectives regarding the sonogram tech program also.

Can the College Accommodate your Schedule? And finally you must verify that the sonographer  college you finally select can provide the class schedule you need. This is particularly essential if you choose to continue working while you attend school.
