Ultrasound Technician Job Description

Bala Cynwyd PA ultrasound tech with patientThere are various acceptable titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also called ultrasound technologists, sonogram techs, and diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers). Regardless of name, they all have the same basic job function, which is to perform diagnostic ultrasound procedures on patients. While a number of techs work as generalists there are specialties within the profession, for example in pediatrics and cardiology. Most work in Bala Cynwyd PA hospitals, clinics, private practices or outpatient diagnostic imaging centers. Routine daily work duties of a sonogram technician can consist of:

  • Maintaining records of patient case histories and details of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Readying the ultrasound machines for usage and then cleaning and re-calibrating them
  • Transferring patients to treatment rooms and ensuring their comfort
  • Using equipment while minimizing patient exposure to sound waves
  • Reviewing the results and determining need for supplemental testing

Sonographers must regularly assess the safety and performance of their equipment. They also are held to a high ethical standard and code of conduct as medical practitioners. In order to maintain that level of professionalism and stay up to date with medical knowledge, they are mandated to enroll in continuing education courses on an ongoing basis.

Ultrasound Technician Degree Programs Offered

Bala Cynwyd PA ultrasound technician performing sonographySonogram technician students have the opportunity to earn either an Associate Degree or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will usually require about 18 months to 2 years to complete dependent on the program and class load. A Bachelor’s Degree will take longer at up to 4 years to finalize. Another option for those who have previously received a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have obtained a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a related health field, you can enroll in a certificate program that will take only 12 to 18 months to finish. Something to bear in mind is that almost all sonographer programs do have a clinical training component as a portion of their curriculum. It can often be satisfied by entering into an internship program which numerous colleges sponsor through Bala Cynwyd PA hospitals and clinics. When you have graduated from one of the degree or certificate programs, you will then have to comply with the licensing or certification prerequisites in Pennsylvania or whatever state you choose to work in.

Online Sonographer Colleges

student attending online sonography class in Bala Cynwyd PAAs previously mentioned, nearly all ultrasound technician schools have a practical component to their programs. So while you can obtain a degree or certificate online, a significant part of the training will be either held in an on-campus laboratory or at a sponsored off campus medical care provider. Clinical training can typically be fulfilled through an internship at a local Bala Cynwyd PA outpatient clinic, hospital or private practice. However the remainder of the classes and training can be accessed online in your Bala Cynwyd home. This is especially convenient for those students that continue working while getting their degrees. In addition online colleges are frequently less expensive than on campus options. Expenditures for study materials and commuting can be reduced also. But similarly as with every sonography program you are reviewing, check that the online school you ultimately pick is accredited. One of the most highly respected accrediting agencies is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is especially important for certification, licensing and finding employment (more on accreditation later). So if you are disciplined enough to attend classes away from the classroom in the comfort of your own home, then an online school could be the ideal option for you.

Subjects to Ask Ultrasound Tech Schools

Questions to ask Bala Cynwyd PA ultrasound technician schoolsNow that you have determined the type of degree or certificate that you would like to obtain, you can begin the process of assessing and comparing sonogram technician colleges. You will first probably want to choose whether you will attend classes online or commute to a college campus in the Bala Cynwyd PA area. Obviously location will be critical if you select the latter, and the price of tuition undoubtedly will be an important qualifier also. But there are additional factors that you must also take into consideration, such as if the schools are accredited and if they provide internship programs. So in order to complete your due diligence so that you can make your final selection, following are several questions that you may want to ask each ultrasound tech school before deciding.

Are the Ultrasound Technician Programs Accredited? The majority of ultrasound technician colleges have received some type of accreditation, whether regional or national. Nevertheless, it’s still important to verify that the school and program are accredited. One of the most highly regarded accrediting agencies in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Programs earning accreditation from the JRC-DMS have gone through an extensive evaluation of their teachers and educational materials. If the college is online it can also earn accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which focuses on online or distance learning. All accrediting agencies should be recognized by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Along with guaranteeing a premium education, accreditation will also help in obtaining financial aid and student loans, which are frequently not accessible for non-accredited colleges. Accreditation may also be a pre-requisite for certification and licensing as required. And numerous Bala Cynwyd PA employers will only hire a graduate of an accredited school for entry-level jobs.

Are Internship Programs Sponsored? Ask if the ultrasound technician programs you are evaluating have relationships with Bala Cynwyd PA hospitals or clinics for internship programs. Not only are internships an excellent way to get practical experience in a clinical environment, they are additionally a means to satisfy the clinical training requirement for most programs. As an ancillary benefit, they can assist students and graduates develop professional connections in the Bala Cynwyd healthcare community and help with job placement.

Is Job Placement Assistance provided? You will probably want to hit the ground running after graduating, but getting that first job in a new profession can be challenging without help. Ask if the ultrasound tech schools you are reviewing have job assistance programs and what their placement rates are. Rapid and high placement rates are an excellent indication that the schools have large networks and great relationships with Pennsylvania healthcare employers. It also confirms that their students are highly regarded and in demand.

Where is the Program Located? For many students, the school they pick will need to be within travelling distance of their Bala Cynwyd PA home. Students who have opted to attend online classes naturally will not have to concern themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of local internships will be of importance. One thing to consider is that if you decide to enroll in a college that is out of state or even out of your local area, you may have to pay a higher tuition. State colleges commonly charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges commonly charge a higher tuition to those students that don’t reside within their districts.

What Size are the Classes ? Unless you are the type of person that likes to sit far in the back of the classroom or get lost in the crowd, you will likely prefer a smaller class size. Smaller classes allow for more individual participation and personalized instruction. Ask the schools you are reviewing what the typical student to teacher ratio is for their classes. If practical you may want to monitor one or more classes before making your ultimate decision. This will also give you a chance to speak with some of the students and instructors to get their opinions regarding the sonogram tech program as well.

Can the College Accommodate your Schedule? And finally you must verify that the ultrasound tech  school you finally select can offer the class schedule you need. This is particularly important if you decide to continue working while you attend school. If you must schedule night or weekend classes in the Bala Cynwyd PA area, confirm that they are available. If you can only attend part-time, check if that is an alternative and how many credit hours or courses you would need to carry. Also, find out what the protocol is for making up any classes that you may miss because of work, illness or family obligations.

    Bala Cynwyd, Pennsylvania

Bala Cynwyd ( /ˈbælə ˈkɪnwʊd/ BAL-ə-KIN-wuud)[1] is a community in Lower Merion Township which is located on the Main Line in southeastern Pennsylvania, bordering the western edge of Philadelphia at US Route 1 (City Avenue). It was originally two separate towns, Bala and Cynwyd, but is commonly treated as a single community. This came about when a single US Post Office served both towns (the "Bala Cynwyd" Branch) using ZIP code 19004. The community was long known as hyphenated Bala-Cynwyd. Bala and Cynwyd are currently served by separate stations on SEPTA's Cynwyd Line of Regional Rail.

Bala Cynwyd lies in the Welsh Tract of Pennsylvania and was settled in the 1680s by Welsh Quakers, who named it after the town of Bala and the village of Cynwyd in Wales. A mixed residential community made up predominantly of single-family detached homes, it extends west of the Philadelphia city limits represented by City Avenue from Old Lancaster Road at 54th Street west to Meeting House Lane and then along Manayunk and Conshohocken State Roads north to Mary Watersford Road, then east along Belmont Avenue back to City. This large residential district contains some of Lower Merion's oldest and finest stone mansions, built mainly from 1880 through the 1920s and located in the sycamore-lined district between Montgomery Avenue and Levering Mill Road, as well as split level tract houses built east of Manayunk Road just after World War II.

The oldest commercial district and the original center of Bala Cynwyd straddles the bridge over the old Pennsylvania Railroad tracks, originally belonging to the Columbia Railroad and now part of the SEPTA Cynwyd Line, along Montgomery Avenue at Bala Avenue. This district, long on the National Register of Historic Places, was settled shortly after William Penn's landing in Pennsylvania in 1682 and contains the village's oldest commercial buildings, some dating to the earliest years of the 19th century.[2] Bala Avenue itself is an extension of this original town center and comprises a specialized commercial district of its own more than a century old; it has long been known for its children's clothing stores, women's dress and consignment shops, the Bala Theater and a number of small restaurants. The remainder of Bala Cynwyd's original commercial district extends south along Montgomery Avenue as part of the Bala Cynwyd-Merion Commercial District and is coextensive with the commercial center of Merion, with its popular delicatessens and restaurants.[3]
