Ultrasound Technician Job Summary

Bath PA ultrasound tech with patientThere are several acceptable titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also called sonogram techs, diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers) and ultrasound technologists. Regardless of name, they all have the same primary job description, which is to perform diagnostic ultrasound procedures on patients. Although a number of techs practice as generalists there are specializations within the profession, for instance in pediatrics and cardiology. The majority practice in Bath PA clinics, hospitals, outpatient diagnostic imaging centers and even private practices. Routine daily work duties of an ultrasound technician may involve:

  • Maintaining records of patient case histories and details of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Preparing the ultrasound machines for usage and then cleaning and recalibrating them
  • Moving patients to treatment rooms and making them comfortable
  • Utilizing equipment while limiting patient exposure to sound waves
  • Reviewing the results and determining need for further testing

Ultrasound techs must regularly assess the performance and safety of their machines. They also must adhere to a high professional standard and code of conduct as medical practitioners. So as to maintain that level of professionalism and remain current with medical knowledge, they are required to enroll in continuing education training on an ongoing basis.

Ultrasound Technician Degrees Available

Bath PA ultrasound technician performing sonographyUltrasound technician enrollees have the opportunity to acquire either an Associate Degree or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will generally take around 18 months to 2 years to complete based upon the course load and program. A Bachelor’s Degree will require more time at as long as four years to finalize. Another alternative for those who have already obtained a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have received a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a relevant health sector, you can instead choose a certificate program that will take only 12 to 18 months to finish. Something to consider is that most ultrasound technician programs do have a clinical training component as part of their curriculum. It can often be fulfilled by entering into an internship program which many schools set up through Bath PA clinics and hospitals. Once you have graduated from one of the certificate or degree programs, you will then need to fulfill the licensing or certification prerequisites in Pennsylvania or whatever state you choose to work in.

Sonographer Online Schools

student attending online sonography class in Bath PAAs aforementioned, nearly all sonogram tech schools have a clinical requirement to their programs. So although you can receive a certificate or degree online, a substantial part of the training will be either held in an on campus laboratory or at a sponsored off-campus facility. Practical training can often be fulfilled by means of an internship at a local Bath PA hospital, outpatient clinic or private practice. But the balance of the training and classes can be accessed online in your Bath home. This is particularly convenient for those students that keep working while earning their degrees. In addition online colleges are often more affordable than on campus alternatives. Costs for commuting and study materials can be lessened as well. But similarly as with any sonography program you are considering, make sure that the online school you select is accredited. One of the most highly regarded accrediting organizations is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is particularly significant for licensing, certification and finding employment (more on accreditation later). So if you are dedicated enough to attend classes outside of the classroom in the convenience of your own home, then an online degree may be the right option for you.

Questions to Ask Sonography Programs

Questions to ask Bath PA ultrasound technician schoolsOnce you have determined which certificate or degree that you would like to obtain, you can initiate the procedure of assessing and comparing ultrasound technician schools. You will first probably want to choose whether you would rather attend classes online or commute to a school campus in the Bath PA area. Clearly location will be significant if you choose the latter, and the cost of tuition no doubt will be an initial qualifier also. But there are other factors that you should also take into account, for instance if the colleges are accredited and if they provide internship programs. So in order to perform your due diligence so that you can arrive at your ultimate selection, below are some questions that you may want to ask each ultrasound tech school before deciding.

Are the Sonogram Tech Programs Accredited? The majority of sonogram technician colleges have acquired some form of accreditation, whether national or regional. Nevertheless, it’s still crucial to verify that the school and program are accredited. Among the most highly respected accrediting agencies in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Schools receiving accreditation from the JRC-DMS have undergone a rigorous assessment of their instructors and course materials. If the program is online it may also earn accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which targets online or distance learning. All accrediting agencies should be acknowledged by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Along with guaranteeing a superior education, accreditation will also assist in getting financial assistance and student loans, which are many times not offered for non-accredited schools. Accreditation can also be a pre-requisite for certification and licensing as required. And a number of Bath PA employers will only hire graduates of an accredited school for entry-level jobs.

Are Internships Provided? Inquire if the sonogram tech programs you are interested in have partnerships with Bath PA clinics or hospitals for internship programs. Internships are not only a great manner to get practical experience in a clinical setting, they are additionally a means to satisfy the clinical training requirement for the majority of programs. As a supplemental benefit, they can assist graduates and students develop professional connections in the Bath medical community and help with job placement.

Is Job Placement Assistance available? You will most likely wish to hit the ground running after graduating, but getting that first job in a new field can be challenging without support. Find out if the ultrasound tech schools you are assessing have job assistance programs and what their success rates are. Rapid and high placement rates are an excellent indication that the schools have large networks and good relationships with Pennsylvania healthcare employers. It also substantiates that their students are highly regarded and sought after.

Where is the Program Located? For a lot of students, the school they select will need to be within commuting distance of their Bath PA home. Individuals who have chosen to attend classes online obviously will not have to concern themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of area internships will be of concern. Something to keep in mind is that if you choose to enroll in a college that is out of state or perhaps out of your local area, you might need to pay a higher tuition. State colleges normally charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges normally charge a higher tuition for those students that live outside of their districts.

What are the Class Sizes ? Unless you are the type of person that likes to sit way in the rear of the classroom or hide in the crowd, you will likely want a small class size. Smaller classes permit more individual participation and personalized instruction. Ask the colleges you are considering what the typical teacher to student ratio is for their classrooms. If practical you may prefer to monitor one or more classes before making your ultimate decision. This will also give you a chance to talk with a few of the instructors and students to get their opinions regarding the ultrasound tech program also.

Can the College Accommodate your Schedule? And last you need to verify that the ultrasound tech  program you ultimately select can furnish the class schedule you need. This is especially important if you decide to continue working while attending classes. If you must schedule night or weekend classes in the Bath PA area, check that they are offered. If you can only attend part-time, verify if that is an option and how many courses or credit hours you would have to enroll in. Also, learn what the protocol is for making up any classes that you may miss due to work, illness or family emergencies.
