Sonographer Job Description

Bedminster PA ultrasound tech with patientThere are several professional titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also called sonogram techs, diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers) and ultrasound technologists. Regardless of name, they all have the same primary job description, which is to carry out diagnostic ultrasound techniques on patients. Although many practice as generalists there are specializations within the field, for instance in pediatrics and cardiology. Most practice in Bedminster PA hospitals, clinics, private practices or outpatient diagnostic imaging centers. Typical daily work duties of an ultrasound technician may involve:

  • Preserving records of patient case histories and specifics of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Prepping the ultrasound machines for usage and then cleaning and re-calibrating them
  • Moving patients to treatment rooms and making them comfortable
  • Using equipment while minimizing patient exposure to sound waves
  • Evaluating results and determining need for further testing

Sonographers must regularly assess the performance and safety of their machines. They also must adhere to a high professional standard and code of conduct as medical practitioners. So as to sustain that level of professionalism and remain current with medical knowledge, they are mandated to complete continuing education courses on a regular basis.

Sonogram Tech Degree Programs Offered

Bedminster PA ultrasound technician performing sonographyUltrasound technician enrollees have the opportunity to acquire either an Associate or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will normally take around 18 months to 2 years to accomplish depending on the program and class load. A Bachelor’s Degree will require more time at as long as 4 years to finalize. Another option for those who have previously obtained a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have earned a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a related medical field, you can enroll in a certificate program that will require only 12 to 18 months to finish. One thing to consider is that almost all sonographer colleges do have a practical training element as part of their curriculum. It often may be fulfilled by participating in an internship program which numerous schools sponsor through Bedminster PA clinics and hospitals. Once you have graduated from any of the degree or certificate programs, you will then need to fulfill the certification or licensing requirements in Pennsylvania or whatever state you decide to work in.

Online Ultrasound Tech Programs

student attending online sonography class in Bedminster PAAs previously mentioned, almost all ultrasound tech colleges have a clinical component to their programs. So although you can earn a certificate or degree online, a significant portion of the training will be either held in an on-campus lab or at a sponsored off-campus facility. Clinical training can often be fulfilled through an internship at a local Bedminster PA hospital, outpatient clinic or private practice. But the balance of the classes and training may be accessed online in your Bedminster home. This is particularly convenient for those students that continue working while earning their degrees. In addition online programs are frequently less expensive than traditional alternatives. Expenditures for study materials and commuting can be reduced as well. But just as with any sonographer college you are looking at, make sure that the online school you enroll in is accredited. One of the most highly regarded accrediting organizations is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is particularly important for certification, licensing and finding employment (more on accreditation later). So if you are dedicated enough to learn away from the classroom in the convenience of your own home, then online classes could be the right option for you.

Questions to Ask Sonogram Tech Programs

Questions to ask Bedminster PA ultrasound technician schoolsWhen you have decided on the type of degree or certificate that you would like to obtain, you can start the process of assessing and comparing sonogram tech colleges. You will first probably want to decide whether you will access classes online or travel to a school campus in the Bedminster PA area. Certainly location will be critical if you select the latter, and the cost of tuition no doubt will be an initial qualification as well. But there are other factors that you must also take into account, such as if the colleges are accredited and if they provide internships. Therefore in order to perform your due diligence so that you can arrive at your final selection, following are some questions that you may want to ask each sonographer school prior to making a decision.

Are the Sonogram Technician Colleges Accredited? The majority of sonogram technician schools have obtained some form of accreditation, whether national or regional. However, it’s still important to make sure that the program and school are accredited. Among the most highly regarded accrediting organizations in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Schools earning accreditation from the JRC-DMS have gone through a detailed review of their instructors and educational materials. If the school is online it may also obtain accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which targets distance or online education. All accrediting agencies should be recognized by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Besides guaranteeing a superior education, accreditation will also help in getting financial aid and student loans, which are often not available for non-accredited colleges. Accreditation can also be a pre-requisite for certification and licensing as required. And many Bedminster PA health facilities will only hire graduates of an accredited school for entry level openings.

Are Internships Provided? Inquire if the sonogram tech schools you are interested in have relationships with Bedminster PA hospitals or clinics for internship programs. Internships are not only a great way to obtain hands on experience in a clinical environment, they are additionally a way to satisfy the clinical training requirement for most programs. As a secondary benefit, they can assist students and graduates form professional connections in the Bedminster health care community and assist with job placement.

Is Job Placement Help offered? You will most likely want to hit the ground running after graduating, but getting that first job in a new profession can be challenging without help. Find out if the ultrasound tech schools you are reviewing have job assistance programs and what their placement rates are. High and rapid placement rates are an excellent indication that the schools have sizable networks and good relationships with Pennsylvania healthcare employers. It also corroborates that their students are highly regarded and in demand.

Where is the College Located? For a lot of students, the college they select will have to be within driving distance of their Bedminster PA home. Those who have chosen to attend online classes obviously will not have to trouble themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of local internships will be of importance. One thing to keep in mind is that if you decide to enroll in a school that is out of state or perhaps out of your local area, you might need to pay a higher tuition. State colleges typically charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges generally charge a higher tuition to those students that don’t reside within their districts.

What are the Class Sizes ? Unless you are the kind of student that likes to sit far in the rear of class or hide in the crowd, you will probably want a small class size. Small classes enable more individual participation and personalized instruction. Ask the colleges you are reviewing what the typical student to teacher ratio is for their classes. If practical you may want to monitor one or more classes before making your ultimate decision. This will also give you a chance to converse with some of the students and instructors to get their opinions regarding the ultrasound technician program also.

Can the School Accommodate your Schedule? And finally you need to confirm that the sonographer  program you ultimately select can furnish the class schedule you need. This is particularly essential if you opt to continue working while you attend classes. If you need to schedule night or weekend classes in the Bedminster PA area, verify that they are available. If you can only attend part-time, verify if that is an alternative and how many credit hours or courses you would need to enroll in. Also, find out what the protocol is for making up any classes that you might miss as a result of work, illness or family emergencies.
