Sonogram Tech Work Description

Biglerville PA ultrasound tech with patientThere are various acceptable titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also referred to as sonogram techs, diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers) and ultrasound technologists. No matter what their title is, they all have the same primary job description, which is to implement diagnostic ultrasound techniques on patients. While a number of techs practice as generalists there are specializations within the field, for example in cardiology and pediatrics. The majority work in Biglerville PA hospitals, clinics, outpatient diagnostic imaging centers and even private practices. Routine daily work functions of a sonogram tech may involve:

  • Keeping records of patient case histories and details of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Preparing the ultrasound machines for usage and then sterilizing and recalibrating them
  • Escorting patients to treatment rooms and making them comfortable
  • Utilizing equipment while limiting patient exposure to sound waves
  • Reviewing the results and identifying need for supplemental testing

Sonographers must routinely assess the performance and safety of their equipment. They also are held to a high professional standard and code of conduct as medical practitioners. So as to maintain that degree of professionalism and stay current with medical knowledge, they are mandated to enroll in continuing education training on an ongoing basis.

Ultrasound Technician Degree Programs Available

Biglerville PA ultrasound technician performing sonographyUltrasound tech enrollees have the choice to acquire either an Associate Degree or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will normally involve about 18 months to 2 years to complete depending on the course load and program. A Bachelor’s Degree will take longer at up to four years to finish. Another option for those who have previously obtained a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have obtained a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a related medical sector, you can instead choose a certificate program that will require only 12 to 18 months to complete. One thing to keep in mind is that most ultrasound technician schools do have a practical training element as part of their curriculum. It often may be fulfilled by taking part in an internship program which numerous colleges set up through Biglerville PA hospitals and clinics. Once you have graduated from any of the degree or certificate programs, you will then have to fulfill the certification or licensing prerequisites in Pennsylvania or whatever state you choose to work in.

Online Ultrasound Tech Classes

student attending online sonography class in Biglerville PAAs aforementioned, nearly all ultrasound technician colleges have a practical requirement to their programs. So while you can receive a degree or certificate online, a substantial portion of the training will be either held in an on campus lab or at a sponsored off-campus medical care provider. Practical training can usually be fulfilled by means of an internship at a local Biglerville PA hospital, outpatient clinic or private practice. But the rest of the training and classes can be accessed online in your Biglerville home. This is especially beneficial for those students that continue working while obtaining their degrees. Plus online programs are many times less expensive than on campus alternatives. Expenditures for study materials and commuting may be decreased also. But just as with every ultrasound tech program you are considering, verify that the online school you choose is accredited. One of the most highly regarded accrediting agencies is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is especially crucial for licensing, certification and job placement (more on accreditation later). So if you are dedicated enough to learn outside of the classroom in the comfort of your own home, then an online school may be the ideal option for you.

Questions to Ask Sonography Schools

Questions to ask Biglerville PA ultrasound technician schoolsAfter you have decided on which certificate or degree that you would like to obtain, you can begin the process of evaluating and comparing ultrasound tech schools. You may first want to decide whether you would rather attend classes online or commute to a school campus in the Biglerville PA area. Certainly location will be important if you decide on the latter, and the cost of tuition no doubt will be an important qualification as well. But there are additional things that you should also take into account, such as if the schools are accredited and if they offer internship programs. So in order to carry out your due diligence so that you can make your final selection, following are several questions that you need ask each ultrasound tech school prior to making a decision.

Are the Sonogram Technician Schools Accredited? Most ultrasound technician schools have received some type of accreditation, whether national or regional. Even so, it’s still important to verify that the program and school are accredited. One of the most highly respected accrediting organizations in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Schools receiving accreditation from the JRC-DMS have undergone an extensive examination of their teachers and course materials. If the school is online it may also receive accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which targets distance or online education. All accrediting organizations should be recognized by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. In addition to guaranteeing a superior education, accreditation will also assist in getting financial aid and student loans, which are often not offered for non-accredited schools. Accreditation can also be a pre-requisite for certification and licensing as required. And numerous Biglerville PA employers will only hire a graduate of an accredited program for entry-level openings.

Are Internship Programs Offered? Inquire if the sonogram technician programs you are evaluating have associations with Biglerville PA hospitals or clinics for internship programs. Not only are internships an excellent way to receive hands on experience in a clinical environment, they are also a means to satisfy the clinical training requirement for the majority of programs. As a supplemental benefit, they may help graduates and students establish professional relationships in the Biglerville health care community and assist with obtaining employment.

Is Job Placement Help provided? You will undoubtedly wish to hit the ground running after graduating, but finding that first job in a new field can be challenging without assistance. Find out if the sonographer schools you are interviewing have job placement programs and what their placement rates are. Rapid and high placement rates are an excellent sign that the schools have substantial networks and great relationships with Pennsylvania healthcare employers. It also corroborates that their students are highly regarded and sought after.

Where is the School Located? For a lot of students, the school they decide on will need to be within driving distance of their Biglerville PA home. Those who have opted to attend online classes obviously will not have to worry themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of local internships will be of concern. Something to bear in mind is that if you decide to enroll in a college that is out of state or even out of your local area, you may be required to pay a higher tuition. State colleges normally charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges frequently charge a higher tuition to those students that don’t reside within their districts.

How Big are the Classes ? Unless you are the sort of person that likes to sit way in the rear of the classroom or get lost in the crowd, you will likely prefer a small class size. Smaller classes enable more individual participation and one-on-one instruction. Ask the colleges you are looking at what the typical teacher to student ratio is for their classrooms. If practical you may prefer to sit in on one or more classes before making your final determination. This will also give you a chance to speak with some of the students and instructors to get their perspectives regarding the ultrasound technician program also.

Can the Program Accommodate your Schedule? And last you must verify that the ultrasound tech  program you finally select can furnish the class schedule you need. This is especially important if you decide to continue working while you attend school. If you need to schedule night or weekend classes in the Biglerville PA area, make sure that they are offered. If you can only enroll on a part-time basis, find out if that is an alternative and how many courses or credit hours you would need to carry. Also, ask what the protocol is for making up any classes that you may miss due to work, illness or family emergencies.
