Ultrasound Technician Work Summary

Bowmanstown PA ultrasound tech with patientThere are more than one acceptable titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also called ultrasound technologists, sonogram techs, and diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers). Regardless of name, they all have the same primary job description, which is to carry out diagnostic ultrasound procedures on patients. Although a number of techs work as generalists there are specialties within the profession, for example in pediatrics and cardiology. The majority practice in Bowmanstown PA clinics, hospitals, private practices or outpatient diagnostic imaging centers. Typical daily job tasks of a sonogram tech may involve:

  • Keeping records of patient case histories and details of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Readying the ultrasound machines for usage and then sterilizing and re-calibrating them
  • Moving patients to treatment rooms and ensuring their comfort
  • Using equipment while minimizing patient exposure to sound waves
  • Evaluating results and determining need for supplemental testing

Sonographers must regularly assess the performance and safety of their equipment. They also must adhere to a high ethical standard and code of conduct as medical practitioners. In order to maintain that degree of professionalism and remain current with medical knowledge, they are mandated to complete continuing education courses on a regular basis.

Sonogram Tech Degrees Available

Bowmanstown PA ultrasound technician performing sonographySonogram tech students have the option to earn either an Associate Degree or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will typically take about 18 months to 2 years to complete depending on the program and class load. A Bachelor’s Degree will take longer at as long as four years to finish. Another option for individuals who have already obtained a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have earned a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a relevant medical sector, you can enroll in a certificate program that will require only 12 to 18 months to complete. One thing to bear in mind is that almost all ultrasound technician programs do have a clinical training component as a portion of their curriculum. It can often be fulfilled by participating in an internship program which numerous schools organize through Bowmanstown PA hospitals and clinics. After you have graduated from any of the certificate or degree programs, you will then need to fulfill the certification or licensing requirements in Pennsylvania or whatever state you decide to practice in.

Online Sonogram Tech Classes

student attending online sonography class in Bowmanstown PAAs previously mentioned, almost all sonogram technician colleges have a clinical requirement to their programs. So although you can obtain a certificate or degree online, a significant part of the training will be either conducted in an on campus lab or at an approved off-campus facility. Practical training can often be fulfilled by means of an internship at a local Bowmanstown PA outpatient clinic, hospital or private practice. But the rest of the classes and training can be accessed online in your Bowmanstown home. This is especially convenient for those individuals that keep working while earning their degrees. Plus online schools are frequently more affordable than traditional alternatives. Costs for study materials and commuting may be lessened also. But just as with any sonography program you are reviewing, confirm that the online school you select is accredited. Among the most highly regarded accrediting organizations is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is especially crucial for licensing, certification and finding employment (more on accreditation later). So if you are motivated enough to attend classes outside of the classroom in the comfort of your own home, then an online degree may be the ideal option for you.

Subjects to Ask Ultrasound Tech Programs

Questions to ask Bowmanstown PA ultrasound technician schoolsAs soon as you have determined the type of certificate or degree that you would like to obtain, you can start the process of reviewing and comparing sonogram tech schools. You may first want to choose whether you will attend classes online or travel to a school campus in the Bowmanstown PA area. Naturally location will be important if you select the latter, and the cost of tuition no doubt will be an important qualifier as well. But there are other factors that you must also take into consideration, for example if the colleges are accredited and if they sponsor internships. So in order to complete your due diligence so that you can make your ultimate selection, following are several questions that you may want to ask each ultrasound tech college prior to making a decision.

Are the Sonogram Tech Programs Accredited? Most sonogram tech schools have received some type of accreditation, whether national or regional. Nevertheless, it’s still imperative to make sure that the program and school are accredited. Among the most highly regarded accrediting agencies in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Schools receiving accreditation from the JRC-DMS have undergone an extensive evaluation of their teachers and educational materials. If the school is online it can also receive accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which targets distance or online learning. All accrediting organizations should be recognized by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. In addition to guaranteeing a premium education, accreditation will also help in securing financial aid and student loans, which are many times not offered for non-accredited schools. Accreditation may also be a pre-requisite for licensing and certification as required. And many Bowmanstown PA employers will only hire a graduate of an accredited college for entry level openings.

Are Internship Programs Offered? Inquire if the ultrasound tech colleges you are evaluating have associations with Bowmanstown PA hospitals or clinics for internship programs. Not only are internships an excellent way to get practical experience in a clinical environment, they are also a means to satisfy the practical training requirement for most programs. As a secondary benefit, they can help students and graduates establish professional connections in the Bowmanstown health care community and help with job placement.

Is Job Placement Help provided? You will probably wish to hit the ground running after graduation, but finding that first job in a new profession can be challenging without support. Find out if the sonographer schools you are reviewing have job assistance programs and what their placement rates are. Rapid and high placement rates are a good sign that the schools have sizable networks and good relationships with Pennsylvania healthcare employers. It also substantiates that their students are highly regarded and sought after.

Where is the Program Located? For a lot of students, the school they select will need to be within commuting distance of their Bowmanstown PA home. Students who have chosen to attend classes online naturally will not have to concern themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of local internships will be of importance. Something to bear in mind is that if you choose to enroll in a college that is out of state or perhaps out of your local area, you may need to pay a higher tuition. State colleges usually charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges frequently charge a higher tuition to those students that live outside of their districts.

What Size are the Classes ? Unless you are the type of student that likes to sit way in the rear of the classroom or hide in the crowd, you will undoubtedly prefer a smaller class size. Smaller classes permit more individual participation and personalized instruction. Ask the schools you are considering what the typical teacher to student ratio is for their classes. If practical you may prefer to sit in on one or more classes before making your final determination. This will also give you a chance to talk with some of the instructors and students to get their perspectives regarding the sonogram tech program as well.

Does the College Accommodate your Schedule? And last you need to confirm that the sonographer  program you ultimately select can offer the class schedule you need. This is especially important if you opt to continue working while you attend classes. If you must schedule night or weekend classes in the Bowmanstown PA area, make certain that they are offered. If you can only enroll on a part-time basis, verify if that is an option and how many credit hours or courses you would have to carry. Also, find out what the protocol is for making up any classes that you may miss due to illness, work or family emergencies.
