Ultrasound Technician Job Description

Campbelltown PA ultrasound tech with patientThere are various acceptable titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also referred to as ultrasound technologists, sonogram techs, and diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers). No matter what their title is, they all have the same primary job description, which is to implement diagnostic ultrasound techniques on patients. Even though many work as generalists there are specialties within the field, for instance in pediatrics and cardiology. Most practice in Campbelltown PA clinics, hospitals, outpatient diagnostic imaging centers and even private practices. Common daily work functions of a sonogram technician can include:

  • Preserving records of patient medical histories and details of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Prepping the ultrasound machines for usage and then cleaning and re-calibrating them
  • Moving patients to treatment rooms and ensuring their comfort
  • Using equipment while limiting patient exposure to sound waves
  • Assessing results and identifying necessity for supplemental testing

Ultrasound techs must regularly gauge the performance and safety of their equipment. They also must adhere to a high ethical standard and code of conduct as medical practitioners. In order to sustain that degree of professionalism and remain up to date with medical knowledge, they are mandated to complete continuing education courses on an ongoing basis.

Ultrasound Tech Degrees Offered

Campbelltown PA ultrasound technician performing sonographySonogram technician enrollees have the option to acquire either an Associate Degree or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will typically involve around 18 months to 2 years to accomplish dependent on the program and class load. A Bachelor’s Degree will take longer at up to four years to complete. Another alternative for those who have already earned a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have received a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a related health sector, you can instead choose a certificate program that will require just 12 to 18 months to complete. Something to consider is that the majority of sonographer programs do have a practical training element as a portion of their course of study. It can often be fulfilled by entering into an internship program which many schools organize with Campbelltown PA hospitals and clinics. After you have graduated from one of the degree or certificate programs, you will then need to fulfill the licensing or certification requirements in Pennsylvania or whatever state you decide to practice in.

Ultrasound Tech Online Programs

student attending online sonography class in Campbelltown PAAs earlier discussed, nearly all sonogram tech colleges have a clinical component to their programs. So while you can earn a degree or certificate online, a significant portion of the training will be either conducted in an on-campus lab or at an approved off campus facility. Clinical training can typically be satisfied through an internship at a local Campbelltown PA hospital, outpatient clinic or family practice. But the balance of the training and classes can be attended online in your Campbelltown home. This is especially beneficial for those individuals that continue working while getting their degrees. In addition online schools are often less costly than on campus options. Expenditures for commuting and study materials can be lessened as well. But similarly as with every ultrasound tech college you are considering, verify that the online school you choose is accredited. One of the most highly respected accrediting organizations is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is particularly significant for certification, licensing and finding employment (more on accreditation later). So if you are motivated enough to attend classes outside of the classroom in the comfort of your own home, then online classes may be the right choice for you.

Questions to Ask Sonography Schools

Questions to ask Campbelltown PA ultrasound technician schoolsAs soon as you have decided on the type of degree or certificate that you would like to earn, you can begin the process of evaluating and comparing ultrasound tech colleges. You may first want to choose whether you would rather access classes online or commute to a college campus in the Campbelltown PA area. Obviously location will be critical if you select the latter, and the price of tuition undoubtedly will be an important qualifier as well. But there are other things that you should also take into account, for instance if the programs are accredited and if they sponsor internships. So in order to carry out your due diligence so that you can make your ultimate selection, following are some questions that you may want to ask each sonography college prior to making a decision.

Are the Sonogram Technician Schools Accredited? The majority of sonogram technician schools have obtained some type of accreditation, whether regional or national. Nevertheless, it’s still crucial to confirm that the program and school are accredited. One of the most highly regarded accrediting organizations in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Programs earning accreditation from the JRC-DMS have gone through an extensive examination of their instructors and course materials. If the school is online it might also receive accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which focuses on online or distance learning. All accrediting organizations should be acknowledged by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Along with ensuring a premium education, accreditation will also assist in acquiring financial aid and student loans, which are many times not available for non-accredited colleges. Accreditation can also be a pre-requisite for certification and licensing as required. And many Campbelltown PA employers will only hire a graduate of an accredited program for entry-level jobs.

Are Internship Programs Provided? Ask if the sonogram technician colleges you are evaluating have partnerships with Campbelltown PA hospitals or clinics for internship programs. Not only are internships a terrific manner to get practical experience in a clinical setting, they are also a way to satisfy the clinical training requirement for the majority of programs. As an ancillary benefit, they may help graduates and students develop professional relationships in the Campbelltown medical community and help with obtaining employment.

Is Job Placement Help offered? You will most likely wish to secure employment quickly after graduation, but finding that first job in a new field can be difficult without support. Find out if the ultrasound tech programs you are interviewing have job assistance programs and what their success rates are. Rapid and high placement rates are a good sign that the schools have sizable networks and good relationships with Pennsylvania healthcare employers. It also substantiates that their graduates are highly regarded and in demand.

Where is the School Located? For a number of students, the college they select will need to be within driving distance of their Campbelltown PA residence. Individuals who have decided to attend classes online naturally will not have to concern themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of local internships will be of concern. One thing to bear in mind is that if you decide to enroll in a college that is out of state or perhaps out of your local area, you may be required to pay a higher tuition. State colleges generally charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges commonly charge a higher tuition to those students that live outside of their districts.

What Size are the Classes ? Unless you are the type of person that prefers to sit way in the rear of the classroom or get lost in the crowd, you will likely want a small class size. Smaller classes permit more individual participation and one-on-one instruction. Ask the colleges you are reviewing what the average teacher to student ratio is for their classrooms. If practical you may prefer to sit in on one or more classes before making your ultimate determination. This will also give you a chance to talk with a few of the instructors and students to get their opinions regarding the ultrasound tech program also.

Does the College Accommodate your Schedule? And last you must confirm that the sonographer  college you finally pick can provide the class schedule you need. This is particularly important if you choose to continue working while attending school. If you need to schedule night or weekend classes in the Campbelltown PA area, confirm that they are available. If you can only attend part-time, verify if that is an option and how many courses or credit hours you would have to enroll in. Also, find out what the protocol is for making up any classes that you might miss as a result of illness, work or family emergencies.
