Ultrasound Tech Work Summary

Canonsburg PA ultrasound tech with patientThere are multiple professional titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also referred to as sonogram techs, diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers) and ultrasound technologists. Regardless of name, they all have the same primary job description, which is to implement diagnostic ultrasound testing on patients. Although a number of techs work as generalists there are specializations within the field, for instance in cardiology and pediatrics. Most practice in Canonsburg PA clinics, hospitals, private practices or outpatient diagnostic imaging centers. Typical daily job functions of an ultrasound tech can consist of:

  • Preserving records of patient case histories and details of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Prepping the ultrasound machines for use and then sterilizing and recalibrating them
  • Escorting patients to treatment rooms and ensuring their comfort
  • Using equipment while minimizing patient exposure to sound waves
  • Assessing results and determining necessity for further testing

Sonographers must routinely evaluate the safety and performance of their machines. They also are held to a high ethical standard and code of conduct as medical practitioners. So as to maintain that degree of professionalism and remain up to date with medical knowledge, they are required to enroll in continuing education programs on an ongoing basis.

Ultrasound Tech Degree Programs Available

Canonsburg PA ultrasound technician performing sonographySonogram technician enrollees have the opportunity to acquire either an Associate or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will usually take about 18 months to 2 years to accomplish based upon the course load and program. A Bachelor’s Degree will take longer at up to four years to complete. Another option for individuals who have previously obtained a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have earned a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a relevant medical field, you can instead choose a certificate program that will require just 12 to 18 months to complete. One thing to consider is that the majority of ultrasound technician colleges do have a practical training element as a portion of their curriculum. It can often be satisfied by entering into an internship program which numerous colleges set up through Canonsburg PA clinics and hospitals. After you have graduated from one of the certificate or degree programs, you will then need to fulfill the certification or licensing requirements in Pennsylvania or whichever state you decide to work in.

Sonogram Tech Online Colleges

student attending online sonography class in Canonsburg PAAs aforementioned, almost all sonogram tech schools have a clinical component to their programs. So while you can earn a certificate or degree online, a substantial portion of the training will be either conducted in an on campus lab or at an approved off-campus medical care provider. Clinical training can often be satisfied through an internship at a local Canonsburg PA outpatient clinic, hospital or family practice. However the remainder of the training and classes may be attended online in your Canonsburg home. This is particularly convenient for those individuals that continue working while earning their degrees. In addition online programs are often less costly than traditional options. Expenditures for commuting and study materials may be lessened as well. But just as with every ultrasound tech program you are looking at, make sure that the online program you select is accredited. One of the most highly respected accrediting organizations is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is especially significant for certification, licensing and finding employment (more on accreditation later). So if you are disciplined enough to attend classes outside of the classroom in the comfort of your own home, then an online school may be the right choice for you.

What to Ask Ultrasound Tech Colleges

Questions to ask Canonsburg PA ultrasound technician schoolsOnce you have decided on which certificate or degree that you would like to earn, you can initiate the procedure of evaluating and comparing ultrasound technician schools. You will first probably want to decide whether you would rather attend classes online or commute to a school campus in the Canonsburg PA area. Naturally location will be significant if you decide on the latter, and the price of tuition undoubtedly will be an important qualification also. But there are additional factors that you must also take into consideration, for instance if the schools are accredited and if they offer internships. So in order to complete your due diligence so that you can make your final selection, below are some questions that you may want to ask each sonography school before deciding.

Are the Sonogram Technician Schools Accredited? A large number of sonogram technician colleges have received some type of accreditation, whether national or regional. Nevertheless, it’s still important to confirm that the school and program are accredited. One of the most highly respected accrediting organizations in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Programs earning accreditation from the JRC-DMS have gone through an extensive review of their instructors and educational materials. If the school is online it can also obtain accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which focuses on online or distance education. All accrediting organizations should be recognized by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Along with guaranteeing a superior education, accreditation will also assist in securing financial aid and student loans, which are often not offered for non-accredited schools. Accreditation might also be a pre-requisite for certification and licensing as required. And numerous Canonsburg PA health facilities will only hire graduates of an accredited program for entry level positions.

Are Internships Offered? Ask if the sonogram technician programs you are assessing have partnerships with Canonsburg PA hospitals or clinics for internship programs. Not only are internships a great means to receive hands on experience in a clinical environment, they are additionally a means to satisfy the clinical training requirement for the majority of programs. As a secondary benefit, they can help graduates and students establish professional connections in the Canonsburg healthcare community and assist with obtaining employment.

Is Job Placement Help offered? You will most likely wish to secure employment quickly after graduating, but finding that first job in a new profession can be challenging without assistance. Find out if the sonographer programs you are assessing have job placement programs and what their success rates are. Rapid and high placement rates are a good indication that the schools have sizable networks and good relationships with Pennsylvania healthcare employers. It also confirms that their students are highly regarded and sought after.

Where is the School Located? For many students, the college they choose will need to be within travelling distance of their Canonsburg PA residence. Individuals who have decided to attend classes online naturally will not have to worry themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of area internships will be of concern. Something to keep in mind is that if you choose to enroll in a program that is out of state or even out of your local area, you may be required to pay a higher tuition. State colleges typically charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges generally charge a higher tuition to those students that live outside of their districts.

How Big are the Classes ? Unless you are the kind of person that likes to sit way in the back of class or hide in the crowd, you will probably want a small class size. Small classes permit more individual participation and personalized instruction. Ask the colleges you are looking at what the typical teacher to student ratio is for their classes. If practical you may prefer to sit in on one or more classes before making your final decision. This will also give you an opportunity to converse with several of the instructors and students to get their opinions regarding the ultrasound tech program as well.

Can the Program Accommodate your Schedule? And last you must verify that the sonographer  school you finally choose can provide the class schedule you need. This is particularly important if you decide to continue working while attending classes. If you need to schedule night or weekend classes in the Canonsburg PA area, check that they are offered. If you can only enroll on a part-time basis, find out if that is an option and how many credit hours or courses you would have to enroll in. Also, learn what the procedure is for making up any classes that you might miss due to illness, work or family emergencies.
