Ultrasound Technician Occupation Description

Carrolltown PA ultrasound tech with patientThere are several acceptable titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also referred to as sonogram techs, diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers) and ultrasound technologists. No matter what their title is, they all have the same primary job description, which is to implement diagnostic ultrasound techniques on patients. Even though a number of techs work as generalists there are specializations within the field, for example in pediatrics and cardiology. Most work in Carrolltown PA hospitals, clinics, outpatient diagnostic imaging centers and even private practices. Common daily job functions of a sonogram tech may consist of:

  • Keeping records of patient case histories and details of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Readying the ultrasound machines for usage and then cleaning and recalibrating them
  • Moving patients to treatment rooms and ensuring their comfort
  • Using equipment while limiting patient exposure to sound waves
  • Reviewing the results and identifying necessity for further testing

Ultrasound techs must routinely assess the performance and safety of their machines. They also must adhere to a high professional standard and code of conduct as health practitioners. So as to sustain that degree of professionalism and remain up to date with medical knowledge, they are mandated to complete continuing education programs on an ongoing basis.

Ultrasound Technician Degrees Available

Carrolltown PA ultrasound technician performing sonographyUltrasound technician students have the opportunity to earn either an Associate Degree or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will generally involve about 18 months to 2 years to accomplish depending on the course load and program. A Bachelor’s Degree will take longer at up to four years to finish. Another alternative for individuals who have previously received a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have obtained a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a relevant medical field, you can enroll in a certificate program that will require only 12 to 18 months to finish. Something to consider is that the majority of sonographer programs do have a clinical training element as part of their curriculum. It often may be fulfilled by taking part in an internship program which numerous colleges organize with Carrolltown PA clinics and hospitals. When you have graduated from one of the degree or certificate programs, you will then have to satisfy the licensing or certification requirements in Pennsylvania or whichever state you decide to practice in.

Online Sonogram Tech Schools

student attending online sonography class in Carrolltown PAAs aforementioned, virtually all sonogram technician schools have a practical component to their programs. So while you can receive a degree or certificate online, a significant portion of the training will be either carried out in an on-campus laboratory or at a sponsored off-campus medical care provider. Clinical training can typically be fulfilled by means of an internship at a local Carrolltown PA hospital, outpatient clinic or family practice. But the rest of the training and classes may be accessed online in your Carrolltown home. This is especially beneficial for those individuals that continue working while obtaining their degrees. Plus online programs are frequently less expensive than on campus options. Expenses for commuting and study materials can be decreased as well. But similarly as with any sonography school you are looking at, verify that the online program you select is accredited. One of the most highly regarded accrediting organizations is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is particularly important for licensing, certification and finding employment (more on accreditation later). So if you are dedicated enough to learn outside of the classroom in the comfort of your own home, then an online degree may be the right option for you.

Points to Ask Ultrasound Technician Programs

Questions to ask Carrolltown PA ultrasound technician schoolsAs soon as you have decided on which certificate or degree that you would like to obtain, you can initiate the process of assessing and comparing ultrasound technician schools. You will first probably want to decide whether you will attend classes online or travel to a school campus in the Carrolltown PA area. Certainly location will be important if you choose the latter, and the price of tuition no doubt will be an initial qualifier also. But there are other factors that you should also take into consideration, for instance if the schools are accredited and if they offer internship programs. So in order to complete your due diligence so that you can make your final selection, following are a few questions that you may want to ask each sonography program before deciding.

Are the Sonogram Technician Schools Accredited? A large number of ultrasound tech colleges have obtained some form of accreditation, whether national or regional. However, it’s still imperative to confirm that the program and school are accredited. One of the most highly respected accrediting organizations in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Programs obtaining accreditation from the JRC-DMS have undergone a detailed examination of their instructors and educational materials. If the program is online it may also obtain accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which focuses on online or distance learning. All accrediting organizations should be acknowledged by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Along with guaranteeing a superior education, accreditation will also assist in securing financial aid and student loans, which are often not accessible for non-accredited schools. Accreditation can also be a pre-requisite for licensing and certification as required. And many Carrolltown PA health facilities will only hire graduates of an accredited college for entry level positions.

Are Internship Programs Offered? Ask if the sonogram technician programs you are reviewing have partnerships with Carrolltown PA clinics or hospitals for internship programs. Not only are internships a terrific means to obtain practical experience in a clinical environment, they are also a way to fulfill the clinical training requirement for the majority of programs. As an ancillary benefit, they may help graduates and students form professional connections in the Carrolltown medical community and help with job placement.

Is Job Placement Assistance provided? You will probably wish to hit the ground running after graduation, but finding that initial job in a new field can be difficult without support. Ask if the ultrasound tech schools you are assessing have job assistance programs and what their success rates are. Rapid and high placement rates are a good sign that the schools have large networks and good relationships with Pennsylvania healthcare employers. It also confirms that their students are highly regarded and sought after.

Where is the College Located? For a lot of students, the college they decide on will have to be within travelling distance of their Carrolltown PA residence. Individuals who have decided to attend online classes obviously will not have to trouble themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of area internships will be of importance. One thing to keep in mind is that if you decide to enroll in a school that is out of state or perhaps out of your local area, you might have to pay a higher tuition. State colleges usually charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges usually charge a higher tuition to those students that live outside of their districts.

How Big are the Classes ? Unless you are the type of student that prefers to sit way in the rear of the classroom or hide in the crowd, you will undoubtedly want a small class size. Smaller classes allow for more individual participation and personalized instruction. Ask the colleges you are considering what the typical student to teacher ratio is for their classrooms. If practical you may prefer to sit in on one or more classes before making your ultimate decision. This will also give you a chance to talk with some of the instructors and students to get their perspectives regarding the sonogram technician program as well.

Does the College Accommodate your Schedule? And finally you must confirm that the sonographer  school you ultimately pick can provide the class schedule you need. This is particularly essential if you decide to continue working while you attend classes. If you must schedule night or weekend classes in the Carrolltown PA area, make sure that they are available. If you can only enroll on a part-time basis, verify if that is an option and how many courses or credit hours you would have to carry. Also, find out what the procedure is for making up any classes that you might miss because of work, illness or family obligations.
