Ultrasound Technician Job Description

Castanea PA ultrasound tech with patientThere are multiple acceptable titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also called ultrasound technologists, sonogram techs, and diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers). Regardless of name, they all have the same basic job function, which is to perform diagnostic ultrasound procedures on patients. Even though a number of techs practice as generalists there are specializations within the field, for instance in cardiology and pediatrics. The majority work in Castanea PA hospitals, clinics, private practices or outpatient diagnostic imaging centers. Routine daily job duties of an ultrasound technician can involve:

  • Maintaining records of patient case histories and specifics of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Prepping the ultrasound machines for usage and then cleaning and re-calibrating them
  • Moving patients to treatment rooms and making them comfortable
  • Using equipment while minimizing patient exposure to sound waves
  • Assessing results and determining need for supplemental testing

Sonographers must frequently gauge the performance and safety of their machines. They also are held to a high professional standard and code of conduct as health practitioners. So as to sustain that level of professionalism and remain up to date with medical knowledge, they are mandated to complete continuing education training on a regular basis.

Sonogram Technician Degree Programs Available

Castanea PA ultrasound technician performing sonographyUltrasound technician enrollees have the choice to earn either an Associate Degree or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will typically require about 18 months to 2 years to accomplish dependent on the program and class load. A Bachelor’s Degree will require more time at up to four years to finish. Another option for individuals who have already received a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have received a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a related medical field, you can enroll in a certificate program that will take only 12 to 18 months to complete. Something to consider is that most ultrasound technician colleges do have a practical training element as part of their curriculum. It can often be satisfied by taking part in an internship program which many schools sponsor through Castanea PA hospitals and clinics. Once you have graduated from any of the degree or certificate programs, you will then need to satisfy the licensing or certification requirements in Pennsylvania or whichever state you elect to work in.

Online Ultrasound Technician Schools

student attending online sonography class in Castanea PAAs earlier discussed, almost all ultrasound technician schools have a clinical component to their programs. So although you can earn a degree or certificate online, a substantial part of the training will be either held in an on-campus lab or at an authorized off campus facility. Clinical training can usually be satisfied by means of an internship at a local Castanea PA outpatient clinic, hospital or private practice. But the balance of the classes and training may be attended online in your Castanea home. This is particularly beneficial for those individuals that keep working while getting their degrees. Plus online schools are often more affordable than traditional options. Expenditures for commuting and study materials may be decreased also. But just as with any sonography program you are considering, confirm that the online program you select is accredited. One of the most highly regarded accrediting agencies is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is especially important for certification, licensing and finding employment (more on accreditation later). So if you are disciplined enough to attend classes outside of the classroom in the convenience of your own home, then an online school may be the ideal choice for you.

Points to Ask Ultrasound Technician Colleges

Questions to ask Castanea PA ultrasound technician schoolsWhen you have determined the type of certificate or degree that you would like to obtain, you can begin the process of assessing and comparing sonogram technician schools. You will first probably want to decide whether you will attend classes online or commute to a school campus in the Castanea PA area. Certainly location will be important if you select the latter, and the cost of tuition no doubt will be an initial qualifier as well. But there are additional variables that you must also take into consideration, for example if the colleges are accredited and if they provide internship programs. Therefore in order to perform your due diligence so that you can arrive at your ultimate selection, below are several questions that you may want to ask each sonography program prior to making a decision.

Are the Sonogram Tech Schools Accredited? The majority of sonogram tech schools have received some type of accreditation, whether regional or national. Even so, it’s still important to confirm that the school and program are accredited. Among the most highly respected accrediting agencies in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Programs receiving accreditation from the JRC-DMS have undergone an extensive examination of their teachers and educational materials. If the college is online it may also receive accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which targets online or distance learning. All accrediting agencies should be acknowledged by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. In addition to guaranteeing a superior education, accreditation will also assist in securing financial aid and student loans, which are many times not available for non-accredited colleges. Accreditation might also be a pre-requisite for licensing and certification as required. And a number of Castanea PA health facilities will only hire graduates of an accredited program for entry-level jobs.

Are Internships Offered? Find out if the ultrasound tech schools you are reviewing have partnerships with Castanea PA clinics or hospitals for internship programs. Not only are internships a great manner to receive hands on experience in a clinical setting, they are additionally a means to fulfill the clinical training requirement for most programs. As a secondary benefit, they can help students and graduates develop professional relationships in the Castanea medical community and help with obtaining employment.

Is Job Placement Help provided? You will probably wish to secure employment quickly after graduating, but getting that first job in a new field can be difficult without assistance. Find out if the sonographer schools you are reviewing have job placement programs and what their placement rates are. Rapid and high placement rates are an excellent sign that the schools have substantial networks and great relationships with Pennsylvania healthcare employers. It also substantiates that their graduates are highly regarded and sought after.

Where is the School Located? For a lot of students, the college they choose will need to be within commuting distance of their Castanea PA residence. Those who have decided to attend classes online naturally will not have to trouble themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of local internships will be of concern. Something to bear in mind is that if you decide to enroll in a program that is out of state or even out of your local area, you might be required to pay a higher tuition. State colleges commonly charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges frequently charge a higher tuition for those students that live outside of their districts.

How Large are the Classes ? Unless you are the sort of person that likes to sit way in the rear of class or get lost in the crowd, you will probably want a small class size. Smaller classes allow for more individual participation and one-on-one instruction. Ask the colleges you are researching what the average student to teacher ratio is for their classes. If practical you may prefer to monitor one or more classes before making your final decision. This will also give you a chance to speak with several of the instructors and students to get their opinions regarding the sonogram tech program also.

Does the School Accommodate your Schedule? And finally you must verify that the sonographer  college you ultimately pick can offer the class schedule you need. This is particularly essential if you choose to continue working while you attend school. If you need to schedule evening or weekend classes in the Castanea PA area, confirm that they are available. If you can only enroll on a part-time basis, check if that is an alternative and how many credit hours or courses you would need to enroll in. Also, find out what the protocol is for making up any classes that you might miss because of work, illness or family obligations.
