Sonogram Tech Occupation Summary

Coolspring PA ultrasound tech with patientThere are various acceptable titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also referred to as ultrasound technologists, sonogram techs, and diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers). Regardless of name, they all have the same basic job description, which is to perform diagnostic ultrasound techniques on patients. Even though a number of techs practice as generalists there are specializations within the field, for instance in pediatrics and cardiology. Most practice in Coolspring PA clinics, hospitals, private practices or outpatient diagnostic imaging centers. Typical daily job functions of an ultrasound technician can include:

  • Keeping records of patient case histories and specifics of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Readying the ultrasound machines for usage and then sterilizing and recalibrating them
  • Transferring patients to treatment rooms and ensuring their comfort
  • Using equipment while minimizing patient exposure to sound waves
  • Reviewing the results and identifying need for additional testing

Ultrasound techs must frequently gauge the safety and performance of their machines. They also must adhere to a high ethical standard and code of conduct as medical practitioners. In order to sustain that level of professionalism and stay up to date with medical knowledge, they are required to complete continuing education training on a regular basis.

Ultrasound Tech Degree Programs Available

Coolspring PA ultrasound technician performing sonographyUltrasound tech enrollees have the opportunity to acquire either an Associate or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will typically involve around 18 months to 2 years to accomplish depending on the course load and program. A Bachelor’s Degree will require more time at as long as four years to finish. Another option for those who have previously received a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have obtained a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a related medical field, you can enroll in a certificate program that will take just 12 to 18 months to finish. Something to bear in mind is that most sonographer schools do have a clinical training component as part of their curriculum. It often may be fulfilled by entering into an internship program which many schools organize with Coolspring PA clinics and hospitals. After you have graduated from one of the degree or certificate programs, you will then need to satisfy the licensing or certification prerequisites in Pennsylvania or whatever state you elect to work in.

Ultrasound Technician Online Schools

student attending online sonography class in Coolspring PAAs earlier discussed, nearly all sonogram tech colleges have a practical requirement to their programs. So although you can receive a certificate or degree online, a substantial portion of the training will be either held in an on-campus lab or at a sponsored off-campus medical care provider. Practical training can often be fulfilled through an internship at a local Coolspring PA hospital, outpatient clinic or private practice. But the remainder of the training and classes may be accessed online in your Coolspring home. This is particularly beneficial for those students that keep working while getting their degrees. Plus online schools are often less expensive than on-campus options. Expenditures for study materials and commuting may be reduced also. But just as with any sonographer program you are reviewing, confirm that the online school you choose is accredited. Among the most highly respected accrediting organizations is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is especially important for certification, licensing and finding employment (more on accreditation later). So if you are disciplined enough to learn outside of the classroom in the comfort of your own home, then an online degree may be the ideal choice for you.

Topics to Ask Sonography Schools

Questions to ask Coolspring PA ultrasound technician schoolsNow that you have decided on the type of degree or certificate that you would like to obtain, you can begin the procedure of assessing and comparing sonogram technician colleges. You may first want to decide whether you will access classes online or travel to a college campus in the Coolspring PA area. Obviously location will be critical if you decide on the latter, and the cost of tuition undoubtedly will be an important qualification also. But there are additional variables that you should also take into consideration, for instance if the schools are accredited and if they offer internships. So in order to perform your due diligence so that you can arrive at your final selection, following are some questions that you may want to ask each sonographer program before deciding.

Are the Ultrasound Technician Colleges Accredited? Most ultrasound tech schools have earned some form of accreditation, whether national or regional. However, it’s still important to verify that the school and program are accredited. Among the most highly regarded accrediting organizations in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Programs obtaining accreditation from the JRC-DMS have gone through a detailed evaluation of their instructors and educational materials. If the college is online it may also receive accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which targets online or distance education. All accrediting agencies should be acknowledged by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Besides guaranteeing a quality education, accreditation will also help in obtaining financial assistance and student loans, which are often not offered for non-accredited schools. Accreditation might also be a pre-requisite for certification and licensing as required. And a number of Coolspring PA health facilities will only hire a graduate of an accredited school for entry-level openings.

Are Internship Programs Offered? Find out if the ultrasound technician schools you are reviewing have relationships with Coolspring PA hospitals or clinics for internship programs. Internships are not only an excellent way to get hands on experience in a clinical setting, they are also a way to satisfy the practical training requirement for the majority of programs. As a secondary benefit, they can help graduates and students establish professional connections in the Coolspring healthcare community and assist with job placement.

Is Job Placement Help offered? You will probably want to secure employment quickly after graduation, but getting that initial job in a new profession can be challenging without help. Find out if the sonographer schools you are considering have job placement programs and what their placement rates are. Rapid and high placement rates are a good indication that the schools have large networks and good relationships with Pennsylvania healthcare employers. It also confirms that their students are highly regarded and in demand.

Where is the School Located? For a number of students, the college they choose will have to be within commuting distance of their Coolspring PA residence. Those who have chosen to attend classes online naturally will not have to concern themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of area internships will be of concern. One thing to consider is that if you choose to enroll in a program that is out of state or even out of your local area, you may have to pay a higher tuition. State colleges typically charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges normally charge a higher tuition to those students that live outside of their districts.

What Size are the Classes ? Unless you are the type of student that likes to sit way in the rear of the classroom or hide in the crowd, you will undoubtedly prefer a small class size. Smaller classes allow for more individual participation and one-on-one instruction. Ask the colleges you are reviewing what the average student to teacher ratio is for their classrooms. If practical you may want to monitor one or more classes before making your ultimate determination. This will also give you a chance to speak with some of the students and instructors to get their perspectives regarding the sonogram technician program also.

Can the School Accommodate your Schedule? And finally you need to verify that the ultrasound tech  college you ultimately choose can furnish the class schedule you need. This is particularly crucial if you decide to continue working while attending classes. If you need to schedule evening or weekend classes in the Coolspring PA area, verify that they are offered. If you can only attend part-time, check if that is an option and how many credit hours or courses you would need to enroll in. Also, learn what the protocol is for making up any classes that you may miss as a result of work, illness or family obligations.
