Ultrasound Technician Work Description

Coraopolis PA ultrasound tech with patientThere are multiple acceptable titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also called sonogram techs, diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers) and ultrasound technologists. Regardless of name, they all have the same primary job description, which is to perform diagnostic ultrasound techniques on patients. While many work as generalists there are specializations within the profession, for instance in cardiology and pediatrics. Most work in Coraopolis PA hospitals, clinics, outpatient diagnostic imaging centers and even private practices. Standard daily job tasks of an ultrasound tech can include:

  • Keeping records of patient case histories and details of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Readying the ultrasound machines for testing and then cleaning and recalibrating them
  • Transferring patients to treatment rooms and making them comfortable
  • Operating equipment while minimizing patient exposure to sound waves
  • Assessing results and identifying need for supplemental testing

Sonographers must frequently assess the performance and safety of their machines. They also are held to a high professional standard and code of conduct as medical practitioners. In order to maintain that degree of professionalism and remain up to date with medical knowledge, they are required to complete continuing education courses on a regular basis.

Sonogram Tech Degree Programs Offered

Coraopolis PA ultrasound technician performing sonographySonogram technician enrollees have the choice to acquire either an Associate Degree or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will normally involve about 18 months to 2 years to accomplish based upon the course load and program. A Bachelor’s Degree will require more time at up to 4 years to finish. Another alternative for individuals who have previously earned a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have obtained a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a relevant health sector, you can instead choose a certificate program that will require just 12 to 18 months to finish. Something to bear in mind is that almost all ultrasound technician colleges do have a clinical training component as a portion of their curriculum. It often may be fulfilled by entering into an internship program which many colleges sponsor through Coraopolis PA clinics and hospitals. Once you have graduated from any of the certificate or degree programs, you will then have to satisfy the licensing or certification prerequisites in Pennsylvania or whichever state you choose to practice in.

Ultrasound Tech Online Colleges

student attending online sonography class in Coraopolis PAAs previously mentioned, almost all ultrasound tech colleges have a practical requirement to their programs. So although you can receive a certificate or degree online, a substantial part of the training will be either carried out in an on campus lab or at an authorized off campus medical care provider. Clinical training can often be satisfied by means of an internship at a local Coraopolis PA outpatient clinic, hospital or family practice. However the rest of the training and classes may be attended online in your Coraopolis home. This is particularly beneficial for those individuals that keep working while getting their degrees. Plus online programs are often more affordable than on-campus alternatives. Expenses for commuting and study materials may be decreased as well. But similarly as with any sonographer school you are reviewing, confirm that the online program you enroll in is accredited. One of the most highly regarded accrediting organizations is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is especially important for licensing, certification and job placement (more on accreditation later). So if you are disciplined enough to learn outside of the classroom in the convenience of your own home, then an online degree may be the right option for you.

What to Ask Sonography Colleges

Questions to ask Coraopolis PA ultrasound technician schoolsAs soon as you have determined which certificate or degree that you would like to earn, you can initiate the process of reviewing and comparing sonogram technician colleges. You may first want to decide whether you will attend classes online or travel to a college campus in the Coraopolis PA area. Naturally location will be important if you select the latter, and the price of tuition no doubt will be an important qualifier also. But there are additional variables that you should also take into consideration, for instance if the programs are accredited and if they offer internship programs. Therefore in order to complete your due diligence so that you can arrive at your final selection, following are a few questions that you need ask each ultrasound tech school prior to making a decision.

Are the Sonogram Technician Programs Accredited? A large number of ultrasound tech colleges have obtained some type of accreditation, whether regional or national. However, it’s still imperative to confirm that the school and program are accredited. One of the most highly respected accrediting agencies in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Programs earning accreditation from the JRC-DMS have gone through an extensive evaluation of their instructors and course materials. If the school is online it can also earn accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which targets online or distance education. All accrediting agencies should be acknowledged by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. In addition to ensuring a quality education, accreditation will also assist in securing financial aid and student loans, which are often not offered for non-accredited colleges. Accreditation may also be a pre-requisite for certification and licensing as required. And many Coraopolis PA health facilities will only hire graduates of an accredited school for entry-level positions.

Are Internships Provided? Find out if the ultrasound technician colleges you are reviewing have partnerships with Coraopolis PA clinics or hospitals for internship programs. Internships are not only a great way to obtain practical training in a clinical setting, they are also a way to satisfy the clinical training requirement for the majority of programs. As a supplemental benefit, they can assist students and graduates form professional relationships in the Coraopolis medical community and help with job placement.

Is Job Placement Assistance offered? You will probably wish to hit the ground running after graduation, but finding that first job in a new field can be challenging without help. Ask if the ultrasound tech programs you are interviewing have job assistance programs and what their placement rates are. High and rapid placement rates are an excellent sign that the schools have substantial networks and good relationships with Pennsylvania healthcare employers. It also confirms that their graduates are highly regarded and sought after.

Where is the School Located? For a number of students, the college they select will need to be within commuting distance of their Coraopolis PA home. Students who have chosen to attend classes online naturally will not have to trouble themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of area internships will be of concern. One thing to keep in mind is that if you decide to enroll in a college that is out of state or even out of your local area, you might be required to pay a higher tuition. State colleges usually charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges normally charge a higher tuition to those students that live outside of their districts.

What are the Class Sizes ? Unless you are the type of person that prefers to sit far in the back of class or get lost in the crowd, you will likely prefer a small class size. Smaller classes allow for more individual participation and personalized instruction. Ask the schools you are looking at what the average teacher to student ratio is for their classrooms. If practical you may prefer to monitor one or more classes before making your ultimate decision. This will also give you an opportunity to speak with several of the instructors and students to get their perspectives regarding the sonogram technician program as well.

Can the Program Accommodate your Schedule? And last you need to verify that the ultrasound tech  college you ultimately select can offer the class schedule you need. This is especially essential if you choose to continue working while you attend classes. If you need to schedule evening or weekend classes in the Coraopolis PA area, verify that they are available. If you can only enroll on a part-time basis, check if that is an option and how many courses or credit hours you would need to enroll in. Also, ask what the protocol is for making up any classes that you may miss as a result of work, illness or family emergencies.

    Coraopolis, Pennsylvania

Coraopolis (/ˌkoʊriˈɒpəlɪs/) is a borough in Allegheny County, Pennsylvania, United States. The population was 5,677 at the 2010 census.[3] In 1940 the population peaked at 11,086. It is a small community located to the west of Pittsburgh, along the Ohio River and to the east of the Pittsburgh International Airport. The borough is noted for its steep topography, numerous brick streets and many large, old homes. The American Bridge Company is headquartered in Coraopolis.[4]

On April 3, 1769, Andrew Montour, an Indian interpreter who had provided service to English settlers during the French and Indian War, was granted a land patent for approximately 350 acres (1.4 km2) of what would later become the borough of Coraopolis and Neville Island. However, there is no evidence that Montour ever lived on this tract. The first permanent white settler in Coraopolis was Capt. Robert Vance, who settled in the vicinity of Montour's tract around 1773, just prior to the beginning of the American Revolution. Vance, a Virginian, had been a member of the regiment commanded by George Washington at the Braddock expedition during the French and Indian War. For the protection of himself and his neighbors, of whom several arrived within a few years, Vance had a log stockade built with a stone blockhouse to protect the area against Indian raids. This was known as Vance Fort (or Fort Vance). The site of the fort was around present-day Broadway and Chestnut streets, near Second Avenue. Over time the community grew and developed, and it became known as Middletown in the 1800s, either because it was situated midway between Pittsburgh and Beaver, Pennsylvania, or perhaps after an early settler named Alexander Middleton who supposedly ran "Middleton's Tavern" in the area.[5]

One of the most important early industries in the area was begun by the Watson family, English immigrants who arrived in America in 1830. The Watsons built a sawmill on the site of the former municipal building on Fifth Avenue. Later, they operated a much larger grist mill on the river bank at Mill Street, until 1887.
