Ultrasound Tech Occupation Description

Cressona PA ultrasound tech with patientThere are various acceptable titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also called sonogram techs, diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers) and ultrasound technologists. No matter what their title is, they all have the same primary job function, which is to perform diagnostic ultrasound techniques on patients. Even though many practice as generalists there are specialties within the profession, for instance in cardiology and pediatrics. Most work in Cressona PA clinics, hospitals, private practices or outpatient diagnostic imaging centers. Typical daily work functions of a sonogram technician may include:

  • Keeping records of patient case histories and details of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Readying the ultrasound machines for usage and then cleaning and recalibrating them
  • Moving patients to treatment rooms and making them comfortable
  • Operating equipment while minimizing patient exposure to sound waves
  • Reviewing the results and determining necessity for additional testing

Ultrasound techs must regularly assess the performance and safety of their equipment. They also must adhere to a high professional standard and code of conduct as health practitioners. So as to maintain that level of professionalism and stay current with medical knowledge, they are mandated to complete continuing education training on a regular basis.

Ultrasound Technician Degrees Offered

Cressona PA ultrasound technician performing sonographyUltrasound tech students have the opportunity to acquire either an Associate or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will generally take around 18 months to 2 years to accomplish dependent on the course load and program. A Bachelor’s Degree will take longer at up to four years to finish. Another option for those who have previously received a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have obtained a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a related medical field, you can enroll in a certificate program that will require only 12 to 18 months to finish. One thing to keep in mind is that the majority of sonographer colleges do have a practical training component as a portion of their course of study. It can often be fulfilled by taking part in an internship program which many colleges set up with Cressona PA hospitals and clinics. Once you have graduated from one of the certificate or degree programs, you will then need to fulfill the certification or licensing prerequisites in Pennsylvania or whatever state you elect to practice in.

Online Ultrasound Technician Colleges

student attending online sonography class in Cressona PAAs earlier discussed, virtually all ultrasound technician colleges have a clinical requirement to their programs. So while you can earn a certificate or degree online, a significant portion of the training will be either conducted in an on-campus lab or at an authorized off-campus facility. Practical training can usually be fulfilled by means of an internship at a local Cressona PA hospital, outpatient clinic or private practice. But the balance of the classes and training may be accessed online in your Cressona home. This is particularly convenient for those students that keep working while obtaining their degrees. Plus online schools are frequently more affordable than traditional options. Costs for study materials and commuting can be reduced also. But similarly as with every sonography college you are reviewing, confirm that the online school you ultimately pick is accredited. One of the most highly regarded accrediting organizations is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is particularly significant for licensing, certification and job placement (more on accreditation later). So if you are dedicated enough to learn outside of the classroom in the convenience of your own home, then an online degree may be the ideal option for you.

Topics to Ask Sonography Colleges

Questions to ask Cressona PA ultrasound technician schoolsWhen you have decided on the type of certificate or degree that you would like to earn, you can initiate the process of evaluating and comparing ultrasound tech schools. You may first want to choose whether you will access classes online or travel to a college campus in the Cressona PA area. Obviously location will be significant if you choose the latter, and the price of tuition undoubtedly will be an important qualification also. But there are additional things that you should also take into consideration, such as if the schools are accredited and if they provide internship programs. Therefore in order to perform your due diligence so that you can make your final selection, following are several questions that you may want to ask each ultrasound tech college before deciding.

Are the Sonogram Tech Schools Accredited? A large number of ultrasound tech schools have acquired some form of accreditation, whether regional or national. Nevertheless, it’s still important to make sure that the program and school are accredited. Among the most highly regarded accrediting agencies in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Schools obtaining accreditation from the JRC-DMS have gone through a detailed evaluation of their teachers and educational materials. If the school is online it might also receive accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which focuses on distance or online learning. All accrediting organizations should be recognized by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. In addition to ensuring a premium education, accreditation will also assist in securing financial aid and student loans, which are many times not offered for non-accredited schools. Accreditation can also be a pre-requisite for licensing and certification as required. And a number of Cressona PA health facilities will only hire graduates of an accredited school for entry level positions.

Are Internships Offered? Inquire if the sonogram technician colleges you are reviewing have associations with Cressona PA clinics or hospitals for internship programs. Internships are not only a terrific way to get hands on experience in a clinical environment, they are additionally a way to fulfill the clinical training requirement for the majority of programs. As an ancillary benefit, they can help students and graduates form professional relationships in the Cressona medical community and assist with job placement.

Is Job Placement Assistance offered? You will probably want to secure employment quickly after graduating, but getting that first job in a new field can be difficult without help. Ask if the sonographer programs you are reviewing have job assistance programs and what their success rates are. High and rapid placement rates are an excellent sign that the schools have substantial networks and great relationships with Pennsylvania healthcare employers. It also confirms that their graduates are well regarded and sought after.

Where is the Program Located? For many students, the school they select will have to be within commuting distance of their Cressona PA residence. Students who have decided to attend online classes naturally will not have to worry themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of area internships will be of importance. One thing to bear in mind is that if you decide to enroll in a college that is out of state or even out of your local area, you may need to pay a higher tuition. State colleges commonly charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges frequently charge a higher tuition to those students that don’t reside within their districts.

How Large are the Classes ? Unless you are the type of student that likes to sit far in the back of class or get lost in the crowd, you will likely prefer a small class size. Smaller classes allow for more individual participation and one-on-one instruction. Ask the schools you are reviewing what the typical student to teacher ratio is for their classes. If practical you may prefer to monitor one or more classes before making your ultimate decision. This will also give you a chance to talk with several of the instructors and students to get their opinions regarding the sonogram technician program as well.

Can the College Accommodate your Schedule? And finally you need to confirm that the sonographer  college you ultimately pick can provide the class schedule you need. This is particularly crucial if you decide to continue working while you attend school. If you need to schedule evening or weekend classes in the Cressona PA area, make sure that they are available. If you can only attend part-time, check if that is an alternative and how many credit hours or courses you would have to carry. Also, find out what the procedure is for making up any classes that you might miss because of work, illness or family emergencies.
