Sonographer Occupation Summary

Dalmatia PA ultrasound tech with patientThere are multiple acceptable titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also referred to as ultrasound technologists, sonogram techs, and diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers). Regardless of name, they all have the same primary job description, which is to implement diagnostic ultrasound techniques on patients. Although a number of techs work as generalists there are specialties within the profession, for example in cardiology and pediatrics. The majority work in Dalmatia PA clinics, hospitals, outpatient diagnostic imaging centers and even private practices. Common daily work duties of a sonogram technician may involve:

  • Preserving records of patient case histories and specifics of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Preparing the ultrasound machines for use and then sterilizing and recalibrating them
  • Transferring patients to treatment rooms and making them comfortable
  • Operating equipment while minimizing patient exposure to sound waves
  • Reviewing the results and determining necessity for further testing

Ultrasound techs must frequently evaluate the safety and performance of their equipment. They also are held to a high ethical standard and code of conduct as medical practitioners. So as to sustain that degree of professionalism and remain up to date with medical knowledge, they are required to enroll in continuing education programs on a regular basis.

Ultrasound Tech Degrees Available

Dalmatia PA ultrasound technician performing sonographyUltrasound tech enrollees have the choice to acquire either an Associate Degree or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will generally require around 18 months to 2 years to complete based upon the program and class load. A Bachelor’s Degree will require more time at as long as 4 years to finish. Another alternative for individuals who have already earned a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have received a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a related health sector, you can enroll in a certificate program that will take only 12 to 18 months to finish. One thing to bear in mind is that most sonographer schools do have a practical training element as a portion of their course of study. It can often be fulfilled by participating in an internship program which numerous colleges set up through Dalmatia PA hospitals and clinics. When you have graduated from one of the degree or certificate programs, you will then have to comply with the licensing or certification prerequisites in Pennsylvania or whatever state you decide to practice in.

Online Sonogram Tech Degrees

student attending online sonography class in Dalmatia PAAs aforementioned, virtually all sonogram technician schools have a clinical component to their programs. So while you can obtain a certificate or degree online, a substantial part of the training will be either conducted in an on campus lab or at an authorized off-campus medical care provider. Practical training can usually be fulfilled through an internship at a local Dalmatia PA hospital, outpatient clinic or private practice. However the balance of the training and classes can be accessed online in your Dalmatia home. This is particularly convenient for those students that keep working while getting their degrees. In addition online programs are frequently less expensive than on campus options. Expenses for commuting and study materials may be decreased also. But just as with any sonographer college you are looking at, confirm that the online program you choose is accredited. Among the most highly regarded accrediting agencies is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is particularly crucial for licensing, certification and job placement (more on accreditation later). So if you are motivated enough to attend classes outside of the classroom in the convenience of your own home, then online classes may be the right option for you.

Topics to Ask Sonogram Tech Colleges

Questions to ask Dalmatia PA ultrasound technician schoolsAfter you have determined the type of degree or certificate that you would like to earn, you can start the procedure of evaluating and comparing ultrasound tech schools. You may first want to choose whether you would rather attend classes online or commute to a school campus in the Dalmatia PA area. Of course location will be important if you choose the latter, and the price of tuition undoubtedly will be an important qualification also. But there are other variables that you should also take into consideration, for instance if the programs are accredited and if they offer internship programs. Therefore in order to perform your due diligence so that you can make your final selection, following are a few questions that you may want to ask each ultrasound tech college before deciding.

Are the Sonogram Technician Colleges Accredited? Most sonogram technician schools have earned some type of accreditation, whether national or regional. Nevertheless, it’s still crucial to verify that the program and school are accredited. Among the most highly respected accrediting agencies in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Schools earning accreditation from the JRC-DMS have gone through a detailed evaluation of their instructors and course materials. If the school is online it might also obtain accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which targets distance or online learning. All accrediting organizations should be acknowledged by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. In addition to ensuring a premium education, accreditation will also help in acquiring financial aid and student loans, which are many times not offered for non-accredited colleges. Accreditation might also be a pre-requisite for certification and licensing as required. And numerous Dalmatia PA employers will only hire a graduate of an accredited school for entry-level openings.

Are Internship Programs Offered? Inquire if the sonogram technician colleges you are evaluating have associations with Dalmatia PA hospitals or clinics for internship programs. Internships are not only a terrific way to receive hands on training in a clinical setting, they are also a means to satisfy the clinical training requirement for most programs. As a supplemental benefit, they can help students and graduates develop professional connections in the Dalmatia healthcare community and help with job placement.

Is Job Placement Assistance available? You will probably wish to hit the ground running after graduation, but finding that first job in a new profession can be challenging without support. Find out if the ultrasound tech schools you are reviewing have job placement programs and what their success rates are. High and rapid placement rates are a good sign that the schools have substantial networks and great relationships with Pennsylvania healthcare employers. It also confirms that their students are highly regarded and in demand.

Where is the College Located? For a lot of students, the college they pick will need to be within travelling distance of their Dalmatia PA home. Those who have opted to attend online classes naturally will not have to concern themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of local internships will be of concern. Something to keep in mind is that if you decide to enroll in a program that is out of state or perhaps out of your local area, you may need to pay a higher tuition. State colleges often charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges often charge a higher tuition to those students that live outside of their districts.

How Big are the Classes ? Unless you are the type of student that prefers to sit way in the rear of the classroom or get lost in the crowd, you will likely want a small class size. Smaller classes permit more individual participation and one-on-one instruction. Ask the schools you are looking at what the typical teacher to student ratio is for their classrooms. If practical you may prefer to monitor one or more classes before making your ultimate determination. This will also give you a chance to converse with some of the students and instructors to get their perspectives regarding the ultrasound technician program as well.

Can the School Accommodate your Schedule? And finally you must verify that the ultrasound tech  college you ultimately pick can provide the class schedule you need. This is especially essential if you opt to continue working while you attend classes. If you need to schedule evening or weekend classes in the Dalmatia PA area, make certain that they are offered. If you can only enroll on a part-time basis, verify if that is an alternative and how many credit hours or courses you would need to carry. Also, find out what the procedure is for making up any classes that you might miss as a result of illness, work or family emergencies.

    Defend Trade Secrets Act

The Defend Trade Secrets Act of 2016 (DTSA) (Pub.L. 114–153, 130 Stat. 376, enacted May 11, 2016, codified at 18 U.S.C. § 1836, et seq.) is a United States federal law that allows an owner of a trade secret to sue in federal court when its trade secrets have been misappropriated.[1] The act was signed into law by President Barack Obama on May 11, 2016.[1] It underscored Congress’s desire to align closely with the Uniform Trade Secrets Act, which had been adopted in some form in almost every U.S. state. Technically, the DTSA extended the Economic Espionage Act of 1996, which criminalizes certain trade secret misappropriations.[2]

The first judicial decision under the DTSA was Henry Schein, Inc. v. Cook,[3] in the United States District Court for the Northern District of California, on June 10, 2016.[4] In that decision, U.S. District Court Judge Jon S. Tigar granted the first temporary restraining order under the DTSA prohibiting an ex-employee from soliciting customers of the plaintiff.[4]

The first verdict under the act came in Dalmatia Import Group, Inc. v. FoodMatch Inc. et al.,[5] on February 25, 2017.[6] In that case, a federal jury awarded Dalmatia $2.5 million for misappropriation of trade secrets, trademark infringement and counterfeiting,[6] $500,000 of which was allocated to the DTSA claim.[7] The trade secrets claim was based on Foodmatch's misappropriation of Dalmatia's fig jam recipe.[8]
