Ultrasound Tech Work Description

De Lancey PA ultrasound tech with patientThere are multiple professional titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also called sonogram techs, diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers) and ultrasound technologists. Regardless of name, they all have the same primary job function, which is to perform diagnostic ultrasound techniques on patients. While a number of techs practice as generalists there are specializations within the profession, for instance in cardiology and pediatrics. The majority work in De Lancey PA clinics, hospitals, outpatient diagnostic imaging centers and even private practices. Typical daily work duties of a sonogram technician can include:

  • Preserving records of patient case histories and specifics of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Prepping the ultrasound machines for usage and then sterilizing and re-calibrating them
  • Transferring patients to treatment rooms and making them comfortable
  • Utilizing equipment while limiting patient exposure to sound waves
  • Assessing results and determining need for further testing

Ultrasound techs must regularly gauge the performance and safety of their machines. They also are held to a high professional standard and code of conduct as medical practitioners. So as to maintain that degree of professionalism and stay current with medical knowledge, they are required to enroll in continuing education training on an ongoing basis.

Ultrasound Tech Degree Programs Available

De Lancey PA ultrasound technician performing sonographySonogram technician enrollees have the choice to earn either an Associate or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will generally require about 18 months to 2 years to complete dependent on the program and class load. A Bachelor’s Degree will require more time at as long as four years to finish. Another option for those who have already received a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have received a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a relevant medical sector, you can instead choose a certificate program that will require only 12 to 18 months to complete. Something to bear in mind is that the majority of sonographer schools do have a practical training element as a portion of their course of study. It often may be fulfilled by taking part in an internship program which many colleges organize through De Lancey PA hospitals and clinics. When you have graduated from any of the degree or certificate programs, you will then need to fulfill the certification or licensing requirements in Pennsylvania or whichever state you decide to practice in.

Sonogram Tech Online Classes

student attending online sonography class in De Lancey PAAs earlier discussed, nearly all sonogram tech schools have a practical requirement to their programs. So while you can obtain a degree or certificate online, a significant part of the training will be either carried out in an on-campus laboratory or at a sponsored off campus facility. Practical training can typically be fulfilled by means of an internship at a local De Lancey PA hospital, outpatient clinic or family practice. But the remainder of the training and classes can be accessed online in your De Lancey home. This is particularly beneficial for those individuals that keep working while earning their degrees. In addition online schools are often less costly than on-campus alternatives. Costs for commuting and study materials may be reduced also. But just as with every ultrasound tech school you are looking at, verify that the online program you enroll in is accredited. One of the most highly regarded accrediting agencies is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is particularly significant for licensing, certification and finding employment (more on accreditation later). So if you are disciplined enough to attend classes away from the classroom in the comfort of your own home, then an online degree may be the ideal choice for you.

Subjects to Ask Ultrasound Tech Programs

Questions to ask De Lancey PA ultrasound technician schoolsAs soon as you have decided on which degree or certificate that you would like to obtain, you can initiate the process of reviewing and comparing sonogram technician colleges. You will first probably want to decide whether you would rather access classes online or commute to a college campus in the De Lancey PA area. Of course location will be critical if you select the latter, and the cost of tuition undoubtedly will be an initial qualifier also. But there are other variables that you should also take into consideration, for example if the schools are accredited and if they sponsor internships. Therefore in order to carry out your due diligence so that you can arrive at your final selection, below are some questions that you may want to ask each sonography school prior to making a decision.

Are the Sonogram Technician Colleges Accredited? The majority of sonogram tech schools have earned some form of accreditation, whether national or regional. Even so, it’s still crucial to confirm that the program and school are accredited. One of the most highly respected accrediting agencies in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Programs earning accreditation from the JRC-DMS have undergone an extensive assessment of their teachers and educational materials. If the program is online it can also earn accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which targets distance or online learning. All accrediting organizations should be recognized by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Along with ensuring a premium education, accreditation will also help in getting financial assistance and student loans, which are many times not accessible for non-accredited schools. Accreditation might also be a pre-requisite for certification and licensing as required. And many De Lancey PA health facilities will only hire a graduate of an accredited school for entry level positions.

Are Internships Provided? Ask if the sonogram tech schools you are evaluating have partnerships with De Lancey PA hospitals or clinics for internship programs. Not only are internships a great means to obtain hands on experience in a clinical environment, they are additionally a way to fulfill the practical training requirement for most programs. As an ancillary benefit, they can assist graduates and students develop professional relationships in the De Lancey healthcare community and help with obtaining employment.

Is Job Placement Help provided? You will most likely want to secure employment quickly after graduation, but getting that first job in a new field can be challenging without assistance. Find out if the ultrasound tech schools you are reviewing have job assistance programs and what their placement rates are. Rapid and high placement rates are an excellent sign that the schools have sizable networks and great relationships with Pennsylvania healthcare employers. It also corroborates that their graduates are well regarded and in demand.

Where is the School Located? For a number of students, the college they select will have to be within commuting distance of their De Lancey PA home. Individuals who have opted to attend classes online obviously will not have to worry themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of area internships will be of concern. Something to bear in mind is that if you choose to enroll in a college that is out of state or even out of your local area, you might need to pay a higher tuition. State colleges often charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges frequently charge a higher tuition to those students that live outside of their districts.

What are the Class Sizes ? Unless you are the type of person that likes to sit way in the back of class or hide in the crowd, you will probably want a small class size. Small classes enable more individual participation and one-on-one instruction. Ask the colleges you are looking at what the average teacher to student ratio is for their classrooms. If practical you may want to sit in on one or more classes before making your ultimate decision. This will also give you a chance to talk with several of the instructors and students to get their opinions regarding the ultrasound technician program as well.

Does the School Accommodate your Schedule? And finally you need to verify that the ultrasound tech  school you ultimately pick can provide the class schedule you need. This is particularly essential if you choose to continue working while you attend school. If you need to schedule night or weekend classes in the De Lancey PA area, verify that they are offered. If you can only enroll on a part-time basis, check if that is an option and how many credit hours or courses you would need to enroll in. Also, ask what the protocol is for making up any classes that you might miss as a result of work, illness or family emergencies.

    Colonial colleges

The colonial colleges are nine institutions of higher education chartered in the Thirteen Colonies before the United States of America became a sovereign nation after the American Revolution.[1] These nine have long been considered together, notably in the survey of their origins in the 1907 The Cambridge History of English and American Literature.[2] Seven of the nine colonial colleges are part of the Ivy League athletic conference: Harvard, Yale, Princeton, Columbia, University of Pennsylvania, Brown, and Dartmouth. (The eighth member of the Ivy League, Cornell University, was founded in 1865.)

The two colonial colleges not in the Ivy League are now both public universities—the College of William & Mary in Virginia and Rutgers University in New Jersey. William & Mary was a royal (state) institution from 1693 until the American Revolution. Between the Revolution and the American Civil War, William & Mary was a private institution. It suffered significant damage during the Civil War and began to receive public support in the 1880s. William & Mary officially became a public college in 1906. Rutgers was founded as Queens College, named for Queen Charlotte, and was for much of its history privately affiliated with the Dutch Reformed Church. It became "The State University of New Jersey" after World War II.

Seven of the nine colonial colleges began their histories as institutions of higher learning de novo (i.e., with no predecessor parent organization). Dartmouth College began operating in 1768 as the collegiate department of Moor's Charity School, a secondary school started in 1754 by Dartmouth founder Eleazar Wheelock. Dartmouth considers its founding date to be 1769, when it was granted a collegiate charter. The University of Pennsylvania began operating in 1751 as a secondary school, the Academy of Philadelphia, and added an institution of higher education in 1755 with the granting of a charter to the College of Philadelphia.
