Sonographer Work Description

Duncansville PA ultrasound tech with patientThere are several professional titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also called sonogram techs, diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers) and ultrasound technologists. No matter what their title is, they all have the same basic job function, which is to implement diagnostic ultrasound procedures on patients. Even though many practice as generalists there are specialties within the field, for instance in cardiology and pediatrics. Most work in Duncansville PA clinics, hospitals, outpatient diagnostic imaging centers and even private practices. Routine daily work duties of an ultrasound tech can consist of:

  • Preserving records of patient case histories and specifics of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Preparing the ultrasound machines for testing and then cleaning and re-calibrating them
  • Moving patients to treatment rooms and ensuring their comfort
  • Using equipment while limiting patient exposure to sound waves
  • Reviewing the results and determining necessity for further testing

Ultrasound techs must regularly assess the safety and performance of their equipment. They also are held to a high professional standard and code of conduct as medical practitioners. In order to sustain that degree of professionalism and stay current with medical knowledge, they are mandated to complete continuing education training on an ongoing basis.

Sonogram Technician Degrees Available

Duncansville PA ultrasound technician performing sonographyUltrasound technician students have the opportunity to acquire either an Associate Degree or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will generally involve about 18 months to 2 years to finish dependent on the course load and program. A Bachelor’s Degree will require more time at as long as 4 years to finalize. Another alternative for individuals who have already received a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have obtained a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a relevant health field, you can instead choose a certificate program that will require only 12 to 18 months to finish. Something to bear in mind is that almost all ultrasound technician programs do have a practical training element as a portion of their course of study. It can often be fulfilled by taking part in an internship program which numerous schools organize with Duncansville PA clinics and hospitals. When you have graduated from one of the certificate or degree programs, you will then need to satisfy the licensing or certification requirements in Pennsylvania or whichever state you elect to work in.

Sonogram Tech Online Classes

student attending online sonography class in Duncansville PAAs aforementioned, nearly all sonogram technician schools have a practical component to their programs. So although you can receive a degree or certificate online, a significant portion of the training will be either carried out in an on-campus laboratory or at an authorized off-campus medical care provider. Practical training can usually be satisfied by means of an internship at a local Duncansville PA hospital, outpatient clinic or private practice. But the balance of the classes and training can be accessed online in your Duncansville home. This is especially beneficial for those individuals that continue working while obtaining their degrees. In addition online colleges are frequently less costly than on-campus options. Expenses for commuting and study materials may be decreased also. But just as with every sonography program you are reviewing, check that the online program you enroll in is accredited. One of the most highly respected accrediting organizations is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is particularly important for certification, licensing and finding employment (more on accreditation later). So if you are motivated enough to attend classes away from the classroom in the comfort of your own home, then an online school could be the ideal choice for you.

Points to Ask Sonogram Tech Colleges

Questions to ask Duncansville PA ultrasound technician schoolsWhen you have determined which degree or certificate that you would like to earn, you can start the procedure of evaluating and comparing sonogram tech colleges. You may first want to decide whether you will access classes online or travel to a school campus in the Duncansville PA area. Obviously location will be significant if you choose the latter, and the price of tuition undoubtedly will be an important qualification also. But there are other variables that you should also take into consideration, for instance if the programs are accredited and if they offer internship programs. Therefore in order to perform your due diligence so that you can arrive at your final selection, following are a few questions that you may want to ask each ultrasound tech college before deciding.

Are the Sonogram Tech Colleges Accredited? The majority of sonogram tech schools have acquired some type of accreditation, whether national or regional. Even so, it’s still imperative to verify that the school and program are accredited. One of the most highly regarded accrediting organizations in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Programs obtaining accreditation from the JRC-DMS have gone through a detailed assessment of their teachers and course materials. If the school is online it may also earn accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which targets online or distance education. All accrediting organizations should be acknowledged by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Along with ensuring a premium education, accreditation will also assist in obtaining financial aid and student loans, which are frequently not available for non-accredited programs. Accreditation might also be a pre-requisite for certification and licensing as required. And a number of Duncansville PA employers will only hire a graduate of an accredited school for entry level positions.

Are Internship Programs Sponsored? Ask if the sonogram tech colleges you are reviewing have relationships with Duncansville PA hospitals or clinics for internship programs. Not only are internships an excellent manner to get practical experience in a clinical environment, they are also a way to fulfill the practical training requirement for most programs. As a secondary benefit, they can help students and graduates form professional connections in the Duncansville health care community and help with job placement.

Is Job Placement Help available? You will most likely want to hit the ground running after graduation, but finding that initial job in a new profession can be difficult without assistance. Find out if the ultrasound tech programs you are reviewing have job assistance programs and what their placement rates are. High and rapid placement rates are a good indication that the schools have sizable networks and great relationships with Pennsylvania healthcare employers. It also corroborates that their students are highly regarded and in demand.

Where is the School Located? For a number of students, the college they select will need to be within driving distance of their Duncansville PA home. Those who have opted to attend classes online naturally will not have to worry themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of area internships will be of importance. One thing to keep in mind is that if you choose to enroll in a school that is out of state or even out of your local area, you might be required to pay a higher tuition. State colleges usually charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges generally charge a higher tuition for those students that live outside of their districts.

What Size are the Classes ? Unless you are the sort of student that likes to sit way in the rear of the classroom or hide in the crowd, you will probably want a smaller class size. Small classes permit more individual participation and personalized instruction. Ask the colleges you are considering what the average teacher to student ratio is for their classrooms. If practical you may prefer to sit in on one or more classes before making your ultimate determination. This will also give you an opportunity to converse with some of the instructors and students to get their perspectives regarding the ultrasound tech program also.

Does the School Accommodate your Schedule? And finally you need to confirm that the sonographer  program you finally select can furnish the class schedule you need. This is especially important if you opt to continue working while attending school. If you need to schedule evening or weekend classes in the Duncansville PA area, verify that they are offered. If you can only enroll on a part-time basis, verify if that is an alternative and how many courses or credit hours you would need to enroll in. Also, find out what the procedure is for making up any classes that you may miss as a result of illness, work or family obligations.
