Sonographer Work Description

Dunlo PA ultrasound tech with patientThere are several acceptable titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also called sonogram techs, diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers) and ultrasound technologists. Regardless of name, they all have the same primary job function, which is to perform diagnostic ultrasound testing on patients. Although a number of techs work as generalists there are specialties within the field, for example in cardiology and pediatrics. Most practice in Dunlo PA hospitals, clinics, private practices or outpatient diagnostic imaging centers. Routine daily work functions of a sonogram technician can consist of:

  • Maintaining records of patient medical histories and details of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Prepping the ultrasound machines for usage and then cleaning and recalibrating them
  • Transferring patients to treatment rooms and making them comfortable
  • Operating equipment while minimizing patient exposure to sound waves
  • Reviewing the results and identifying necessity for further testing

Ultrasound techs must frequently gauge the safety and performance of their machines. They also are held to a high professional standard and code of conduct as health practitioners. In order to maintain that level of professionalism and remain up to date with medical knowledge, they are mandated to enroll in continuing education programs on a regular basis.

Ultrasound Technician Degree Programs Available

Dunlo PA ultrasound technician performing sonographySonogram tech students have the choice to acquire either an Associate Degree or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will generally involve around 18 months to 2 years to complete depending on the course load and program. A Bachelor’s Degree will take longer at up to four years to complete. Another option for those who have already earned a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have earned a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a related medical field, you can instead choose a certificate program that will take just 12 to 18 months to complete. One thing to bear in mind is that almost all sonographer schools do have a clinical training element as part of their course of study. It can often be fulfilled by participating in an internship program which many schools organize through Dunlo PA hospitals and clinics. Once you have graduated from one of the certificate or degree programs, you will then need to satisfy the certification or licensing prerequisites in Pennsylvania or whatever state you decide to practice in.

Sonogram Tech Online Classes

student attending online sonography class in Dunlo PAAs earlier discussed, virtually all sonogram tech colleges have a practical component to their programs. So while you can obtain a degree or certificate online, a significant portion of the training will be either held in an on campus laboratory or at an authorized off-campus facility. Practical training can usually be satisfied through an internship at a local Dunlo PA outpatient clinic, hospital or family practice. However the balance of the training and classes can be attended online in your Dunlo home. This is especially convenient for those students that continue working while obtaining their degrees. Plus online colleges are often less expensive than traditional alternatives. Expenses for study materials and commuting may be reduced as well. But just as with any sonography college you are looking at, check that the online school you ultimately pick is accredited. Among the most highly respected accrediting organizations is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is especially important for certification, licensing and finding employment (more on accreditation later). So if you are motivated enough to learn away from the classroom in the comfort of your own home, then an online degree may be the ideal option for you.

Topics to Ask Sonogram Tech Schools

Questions to ask Dunlo PA ultrasound technician schoolsWhen you have determined the type of certificate or degree that you would like to obtain, you can initiate the process of reviewing and comparing sonogram tech schools. You may first want to decide whether you would rather attend classes online or commute to a college campus in the Dunlo PA area. Naturally location will be important if you decide on the latter, and the price of tuition undoubtedly will be an important qualification also. But there are additional things that you must also take into account, for example if the programs are accredited and if they provide internship programs. Therefore in order to perform your due diligence so that you can arrive at your final selection, following are several questions that you may want to ask each sonographer college before deciding.

Are the Sonogram Tech Colleges Accredited? The majority of sonogram tech schools have acquired some type of accreditation, whether national or regional. Nevertheless, it’s still important to verify that the program and school are accredited. Among the most highly respected accrediting organizations in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Programs receiving accreditation from the JRC-DMS have undergone a rigorous assessment of their teachers and course materials. If the program is online it may also earn accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which targets distance or online education. All accrediting agencies should be recognized by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Along with guaranteeing a premium education, accreditation will also help in acquiring financial aid and student loans, which are frequently not accessible for non-accredited schools. Accreditation may also be a pre-requisite for licensing and certification as required. And a number of Dunlo PA health facilities will only hire a graduate of an accredited college for entry-level jobs.

Are Internship Programs Offered? Inquire if the sonogram technician schools you are interested in have associations with Dunlo PA clinics or hospitals for internship programs. Not only are internships a terrific manner to receive hands on training in a clinical environment, they are additionally a means to fulfill the clinical training requirement for the majority of programs. As a secondary benefit, they may help graduates and students develop professional connections in the Dunlo health care community and help with job placement.

Is Job Placement Help provided? You will most likely want to secure employment quickly after graduation, but finding that first job in a new field can be difficult without help. Find out if the ultrasound tech programs you are assessing have job assistance programs and what their placement rates are. High and rapid placement rates are an excellent sign that the schools have sizable networks and great relationships with Pennsylvania healthcare employers. It also confirms that their graduates are highly regarded and sought after.

Where is the College Located? For a lot of students, the school they choose will have to be within commuting distance of their Dunlo PA home. Students who have decided to attend online classes naturally will not have to concern themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of area internships will be of concern. Something to keep in mind is that if you choose to enroll in a school that is out of state or perhaps out of your local area, you might have to pay a higher tuition. State colleges generally charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges generally charge a higher tuition for those students that don’t reside within their districts.

What are the Class Sizes ? Unless you are the type of student that likes to sit way in the rear of class or get lost in the crowd, you will likely prefer a smaller class size. Small classes enable more individual participation and personalized instruction. Ask the schools you are considering what the average student to teacher ratio is for their classrooms. If practical you may want to monitor one or more classes before making your final decision. This will also give you an opportunity to converse with some of the students and instructors to get their perspectives regarding the sonogram technician program as well.

Can the Program Accommodate your Schedule? And last you must verify that the ultrasound tech  college you ultimately pick can offer the class schedule you need. This is especially crucial if you decide to continue working while you attend school. If you must schedule evening or weekend classes in the Dunlo PA area, make certain that they are available. If you can only enroll on a part-time basis, verify if that is an option and how many credit hours or courses you would have to carry. Also, learn what the procedure is for making up any classes that you might miss because of illness, work or family emergencies.
