Ultrasound Technician Work Summary

Ellsworth PA ultrasound tech with patientThere are various professional titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also called sonogram techs, diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers) and ultrasound technologists. No matter what their title is, they all have the same primary job function, which is to carry out diagnostic ultrasound testing on patients. Although a number of techs work as generalists there are specializations within the field, for example in pediatrics and cardiology. The majority work in Ellsworth PA clinics, hospitals, outpatient diagnostic imaging centers and even private practices. Typical daily work functions of a sonogram technician may include:

  • Keeping records of patient medical histories and specifics of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Preparing the ultrasound machines for testing and then cleaning and recalibrating them
  • Transferring patients to treatment rooms and making them comfortable
  • Using equipment while limiting patient exposure to sound waves
  • Evaluating results and determining necessity for supplemental testing

Sonographers must regularly gauge the safety and performance of their equipment. They also must adhere to a high ethical standard and code of conduct as health practitioners. In order to sustain that degree of professionalism and remain current with medical knowledge, they are mandated to complete continuing education courses on an ongoing basis.

Ultrasound Tech Degrees Available

Ellsworth PA ultrasound technician performing sonographyUltrasound technician students have the opportunity to earn either an Associate or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will normally take around 18 months to 2 years to complete dependent on the course load and program. A Bachelor’s Degree will take longer at up to 4 years to finish. Another option for those who have previously obtained a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have earned a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a related medical sector, you can enroll in a certificate program that will require just 12 to 18 months to finish. Something to keep in mind is that the majority of sonographer colleges do have a clinical training element as a portion of their course of study. It often may be satisfied by taking part in an internship program which numerous schools organize through Ellsworth PA clinics and hospitals. Once you have graduated from one of the certificate or degree programs, you will then need to satisfy the licensing or certification requirements in Pennsylvania or whatever state you elect to work in.

Sonographer Online Programs

student attending online sonography class in Ellsworth PAAs earlier discussed, nearly all sonogram tech colleges have a practical component to their programs. So while you can earn a degree or certificate online, a substantial part of the training will be either conducted in an on campus lab or at a sponsored off campus medical care provider. Practical training can usually be fulfilled through an internship at a local Ellsworth PA hospital, outpatient clinic or family practice. However the balance of the training and classes may be accessed online in your Ellsworth home. This is particularly convenient for those students that continue working while earning their degrees. In addition online programs are many times less costly than on-campus alternatives. Expenditures for study materials and commuting can be reduced as well. But just as with every sonography school you are considering, make sure that the online school you enroll in is accredited. Among the most highly respected accrediting organizations is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is particularly crucial for certification, licensing and finding employment (more on accreditation later). So if you are motivated enough to learn away from the classroom in the convenience of your own home, then online classes could be the ideal option for you.

Subjects to Ask Sonogram Tech Programs

Questions to ask Ellsworth PA ultrasound technician schoolsNow that you have determined which certificate or degree that you would like to earn, you can begin the process of assessing and comparing sonogram technician colleges. You may first want to decide whether you will attend classes online or travel to a school campus in the Ellsworth PA area. Clearly location will be significant if you choose the latter, and the cost of tuition no doubt will be an initial qualification as well. But there are additional things that you must also take into account, for example if the colleges are accredited and if they offer internships. Therefore in order to perform your due diligence so that you can arrive at your ultimate selection, below are a few questions that you may want to ask each ultrasound tech program prior to making a decision.

Are the Ultrasound Technician Colleges Accredited? Most ultrasound technician schools have acquired some type of accreditation, whether regional or national. However, it’s still crucial to confirm that the program and school are accredited. Among the most highly respected accrediting agencies in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Programs earning accreditation from the JRC-DMS have undergone a detailed assessment of their instructors and course materials. If the school is online it might also earn accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which targets online or distance learning. All accrediting organizations should be acknowledged by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Along with guaranteeing a premium education, accreditation will also help in securing financial assistance and student loans, which are many times not offered for non-accredited programs. Accreditation can also be a pre-requisite for certification and licensing as required. And many Ellsworth PA employers will only hire a graduate of an accredited college for entry-level positions.

Are Internships Sponsored? Ask if the sonogram tech schools you are assessing have associations with Ellsworth PA clinics or hospitals for internship programs. Not only are internships an excellent manner to receive hands on training in a clinical environment, they are additionally a means to fulfill the clinical training requirement for the majority of programs. As an ancillary benefit, they may assist graduates and students develop professional relationships in the Ellsworth health care community and assist with obtaining employment.

Is Job Placement Assistance provided? You will most likely want to secure employment quickly after graduation, but getting that initial job in a new field can be difficult without support. Find out if the ultrasound tech programs you are reviewing have job placement programs and what their placement rates are. Rapid and high placement rates are an excellent indication that the schools have sizable networks and great relationships with Pennsylvania healthcare employers. It also corroborates that their students are well regarded and sought after.

Where is the School Located? For a lot of students, the college they decide on will have to be within travelling distance of their Ellsworth PA residence. Individuals who have decided to attend online classes naturally will not have to worry themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of local internships will be of importance. One thing to keep in mind is that if you choose to enroll in a school that is out of state or even out of your local area, you may need to pay a higher tuition. State colleges usually charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges typically charge a higher tuition to those students that live outside of their districts.

What are the Class Sizes ? Unless you are the type of person that likes to sit far in the back of the classroom or hide in the crowd, you will probably want a smaller class size. Smaller classes enable more individual participation and one-on-one instruction. Ask the schools you are considering what the typical student to teacher ratio is for their classrooms. If practical you may prefer to monitor one or more classes before making your ultimate determination. This will also give you a chance to converse with some of the students and instructors to get their opinions regarding the ultrasound tech program as well.

Does the School Accommodate your Schedule? And finally you must confirm that the ultrasound tech  program you finally select can offer the class schedule you need. This is especially crucial if you decide to continue working while attending school. If you need to schedule night or weekend classes in the Ellsworth PA area, make certain that they are available. If you can only attend part-time, check if that is an option and how many credit hours or courses you would have to carry. Also, find out what the procedure is for making up any classes that you may miss due to illness, work or family obligations.
