Ultrasound Technician Work Description

Feasterville Trevose PA ultrasound tech with patientThere are more than one professional titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also referred to as sonogram techs, diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers) and ultrasound technologists. No matter what their title is, they all have the same primary job function, which is to carry out diagnostic ultrasound procedures on patients. Even though many work as generalists there are specialties within the profession, for instance in pediatrics and cardiology. The majority work in Feasterville Trevose PA hospitals, clinics, outpatient diagnostic imaging centers and even private practices. Typical daily job tasks of a sonogram tech may involve:

  • Keeping records of patient case histories and details of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Preparing the ultrasound machines for usage and then cleaning and recalibrating them
  • Moving patients to treatment rooms and ensuring their comfort

  • Reviewing the results and determining need for supplemental testing

Ultrasound techs must regularly evaluate the performance and safety of their machines. They also are held to a high professional standard and code of conduct as medical practitioners. In order to maintain that degree of professionalism and remain up to date with medical knowledge, they are required to complete continuing education courses on a regular basis.

Sonogram Tech Degree Programs Available

Feasterville Trevose PA ultrasound technician performing sonographySonogram tech enrollees have the choice to acquire either an Associate or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will typically require around 18 months to 2 years to complete depending on the program and class load. A Bachelor’s Degree will take longer at as long as four years to finalize. Another option for individuals who have previously obtained a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have obtained a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a relevant health sector, you can instead choose a certificate program that will require just 12 to 18 months to complete. One thing to consider is that the majority of sonographer colleges do have a clinical training component as part of their course of study. It can often be fulfilled by entering into an internship program which numerous colleges sponsor through Feasterville Trevose PA hospitals and clinics. When you have graduated from one of the degree or certificate programs, you will then have to fulfill the licensing or certification requirements in Pennsylvania or whatever state you decide to practice in.

Online Ultrasound Tech Degrees

student attending online sonography class in Feasterville Trevose PAAs earlier discussed, virtually all ultrasound technician colleges have a practical requirement to their programs. So although you can obtain a degree or certificate online, a substantial part of the training will be either carried out in an on-campus laboratory or at a sponsored off campus medical care provider. Practical training can often be satisfied through an internship at a local Feasterville Trevose PA hospital, outpatient clinic or private practice. However the balance of the classes and training may be attended online in your Feasterville Trevose home. This is especially convenient for those individuals that keep working while earning their degrees. Plus online schools are frequently more affordable than on campus alternatives. Costs for study materials and commuting may be lessened also. But similarly as with every sonography school you are reviewing, check that the online school you ultimately pick is accredited. Among the most highly respected accrediting organizations is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is particularly significant for certification, licensing and job placement (more on accreditation later). So if you are motivated enough to learn away from the classroom in the convenience of your own home, then online classes may be the ideal choice for you.

Topics to Ask Ultrasound Technician Colleges

Questions to ask Feasterville Trevose PA ultrasound technician schoolsAs soon as you have decided on the type of certificate or degree that you would like to earn, you can start the process of assessing and comparing ultrasound technician schools. You may first want to decide whether you would rather access classes online or commute to a college campus in the Feasterville Trevose PA area. Obviously location will be important if you choose the latter, and the cost of tuition no doubt will be an important qualifier also. But there are other things that you should also take into consideration, for example if the programs are accredited and if they provide internships. So in order to complete your due diligence so that you can make your ultimate selection, below are some questions that you may want to ask each ultrasound tech college prior to making a decision.

Are the Ultrasound Technician Programs Accredited? The majority of ultrasound tech colleges have obtained some form of accreditation, whether national or regional. Even so, it’s still imperative to confirm that the school and program are accredited. One of the most highly respected accrediting agencies in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Programs earning accreditation from the JRC-DMS have undergone an extensive evaluation of their teachers and course materials. If the school is online it may also obtain accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which focuses on distance or online education. All accrediting organizations should be recognized by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Along with ensuring a quality education, accreditation will also help in securing financial aid and student loans, which are frequently not offered for non-accredited colleges. Accreditation might also be a pre-requisite for licensing and certification as required. And a number of Feasterville Trevose PA health facilities will only hire a graduate of an accredited school for entry level jobs.

Are Internships Provided? Ask if the sonogram tech schools you are assessing have partnerships with Feasterville Trevose PA hospitals or clinics for internship programs. Not only are internships an excellent manner to obtain practical experience in a clinical environment, they are also a means to fulfill the practical training requirement for most programs. As a supplemental benefit, they may assist graduates and students form professional relationships in the Feasterville Trevose medical community and assist with job placement.

Is Job Placement Help provided? You will probably want to hit the ground running after graduation, but finding that initial job in a new profession can be challenging without support. Ask if the ultrasound tech programs you are assessing have job assistance programs and what their placement rates are. Rapid and high placement rates are a good indication that the schools have large networks and great relationships with Pennsylvania healthcare employers. It also substantiates that their students are highly regarded and sought after.

Where is the College Located? For many students, the school they select will need to be within travelling distance of their Feasterville Trevose PA home. Those who have decided to attend classes online naturally will not have to concern themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of area internships will be of importance. Something to keep in mind is that if you decide to enroll in a college that is out of state or perhaps out of your local area, you may be required to pay a higher tuition. State colleges commonly charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges usually charge a higher tuition for those students that don’t reside within their districts.

How Big are the Classes ? Unless you are the sort of student that likes to sit far in the rear of class or hide in the crowd, you will undoubtedly prefer a smaller class size. Small classes permit more individual participation and personalized instruction. Ask the schools you are researching what the typical student to teacher ratio is for their classes. If practical you may want to sit in on one or more classes before making your ultimate decision. This will also give you an opportunity to converse with a few of the students and instructors to get their perspectives regarding the ultrasound tech program also.

Does the Program Accommodate your Schedule? And finally you must verify that the ultrasound tech  school you finally select can furnish the class schedule you need. This is especially important if you choose to continue working while attending school. If you need to schedule evening or weekend classes in the Feasterville Trevose PA area, verify that they are offered. If you can only enroll on a part-time basis, find out if that is an option and how many credit hours or courses you would need to carry. Also, ask what the procedure is for making up any classes that you may miss due to illness, work or family emergencies.
