Sonographer Job Description

Finleyville PA ultrasound tech with patientThere are several acceptable titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also called sonogram techs, diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers) and ultrasound technologists. Regardless of name, they all have the same basic job description, which is to perform diagnostic ultrasound procedures on patients. While a number of techs practice as generalists there are specializations within the field, for instance in pediatrics and cardiology. The majority practice in Finleyville PA hospitals, clinics, outpatient diagnostic imaging centers and even private practices. Standard daily job tasks of an ultrasound technician can consist of:

  • Maintaining records of patient medical histories and details of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Preparing the ultrasound machines for use and then sterilizing and recalibrating them
  • Moving patients to treatment rooms and ensuring their comfort
  • Using equipment while limiting patient exposure to sound waves
  • Reviewing the results and determining necessity for supplemental testing

Sonographers must regularly assess the safety and performance of their equipment. They also are held to a high professional standard and code of conduct as medical practitioners. So as to sustain that level of professionalism and stay current with medical knowledge, they are mandated to complete continuing education programs on an ongoing basis.

Ultrasound Technician Degree Programs Offered

Finleyville PA ultrasound technician performing sonographySonogram technician enrollees have the option to earn either an Associate Degree or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will generally involve around 18 months to 2 years to finish depending on the program and class load. A Bachelor’s Degree will require more time at up to 4 years to finish. Another option for those who have previously earned a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have received a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a relevant medical sector, you can instead choose a certificate program that will take just 12 to 18 months to finish. One thing to bear in mind is that almost all sonographer programs do have a clinical training component as part of their course of study. It often may be fulfilled by taking part in an internship program which many schools set up through Finleyville PA hospitals and clinics. After you have graduated from one of the degree or certificate programs, you will then have to satisfy the certification or licensing prerequisites in Pennsylvania or whatever state you decide to work in.

Ultrasound Tech Online Programs

student attending online sonography class in Finleyville PAAs aforementioned, almost all ultrasound tech colleges have a clinical component to their programs. So while you can obtain a degree or certificate online, a substantial part of the training will be either held in an on-campus lab or at an authorized off campus facility. Clinical training can often be satisfied by means of an internship at a local Finleyville PA outpatient clinic, hospital or family practice. But the balance of the classes and training may be attended online in your Finleyville home. This is especially convenient for those individuals that keep working while earning their degrees. Plus online programs are many times more affordable than traditional options. Expenses for commuting and study materials may be lessened also. But just as with every sonography college you are reviewing, check that the online program you select is accredited. One of the most highly regarded accrediting agencies is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is especially significant for certification, licensing and job placement (more on accreditation later). So if you are disciplined enough to learn outside of the classroom in the convenience of your own home, then online classes could be the ideal choice for you.

Points to Ask Ultrasound Technician Programs

Questions to ask Finleyville PA ultrasound technician schoolsWhen you have determined the type of degree or certificate that you would like to obtain, you can begin the procedure of assessing and comparing ultrasound technician colleges. You will first probably want to choose whether you will attend classes online or travel to a college campus in the Finleyville PA area. Naturally location will be important if you choose the latter, and the price of tuition undoubtedly will be an initial qualifier also. But there are additional factors that you must also take into account, such as if the schools are accredited and if they offer internship programs. So in order to carry out your due diligence so that you can make your final selection, following are several questions that you may want to ask each ultrasound tech college prior to making a decision.

Are the Ultrasound Tech Schools Accredited? A large number of sonogram tech schools have received some type of accreditation, whether regional or national. Nevertheless, it’s still imperative to verify that the school and program are accredited. One of the most highly respected accrediting organizations in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Schools earning accreditation from the JRC-DMS have undergone an extensive assessment of their instructors and course materials. If the school is online it might also earn accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which targets distance or online education. All accrediting organizations should be acknowledged by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Along with guaranteeing a quality education, accreditation will also assist in securing financial assistance and student loans, which are many times not available for non-accredited programs. Accreditation may also be a pre-requisite for licensing and certification as required. And numerous Finleyville PA employers will only hire graduates of an accredited program for entry-level openings.

Are Internship Programs Offered? Find out if the sonogram tech programs you are assessing have partnerships with Finleyville PA hospitals or clinics for internship programs. Not only are internships a great manner to get hands on experience in a clinical environment, they are additionally a way to fulfill the clinical training requirement for the majority of programs. As a secondary benefit, they may help graduates and students establish professional connections in the Finleyville medical community and help with obtaining employment.

Is Job Placement Assistance available? You will undoubtedly wish to hit the ground running after graduating, but getting that initial job in a new field can be challenging without help. Ask if the ultrasound tech schools you are considering have job placement programs and what their placement rates are. High and rapid placement rates are a good sign that the schools have sizable networks and good relationships with Pennsylvania healthcare employers. It also substantiates that their students are highly regarded and sought after.

Where is the College Located? For a lot of students, the college they pick will need to be within travelling distance of their Finleyville PA home. Students who have opted to attend classes online obviously will not have to concern themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of area internships will be of importance. Something to keep in mind is that if you choose to enroll in a school that is out of state or even out of your local area, you might need to pay a higher tuition. State colleges normally charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges normally charge a higher tuition to those students that live outside of their districts.

What are the Class Sizes ? Unless you are the type of person that likes to sit way in the back of class or get lost in the crowd, you will likely prefer a small class size. Smaller classes enable more individual participation and one-on-one instruction. Ask the colleges you are looking at what the average student to teacher ratio is for their classes. If practical you may want to sit in on one or more classes before making your final determination. This will also give you an opportunity to converse with several of the students and instructors to get their perspectives regarding the ultrasound tech program also.

Does the College Accommodate your Schedule? And last you need to verify that the sonographer  program you ultimately select can offer the class schedule you need. This is especially crucial if you decide to continue working while you attend school. If you need to schedule evening or weekend classes in the Finleyville PA area, make certain that they are available. If you can only enroll on a part-time basis, find out if that is an option and how many courses or credit hours you would have to enroll in. Also, find out what the procedure is for making up any classes that you might miss because of work, illness or family emergencies.
