Sonographer Job Summary

Gipsy PA ultrasound tech with patientThere are several acceptable titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also referred to as sonogram techs, diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers) and ultrasound technologists. Regardless of name, they all have the same primary job function, which is to implement diagnostic ultrasound procedures on patients. Although a number of techs work as generalists there are specializations within the field, for instance in cardiology and pediatrics. Most work in Gipsy PA hospitals, clinics, outpatient diagnostic imaging centers and even private practices. Common daily job duties of a sonogram technician may involve:

  • Keeping records of patient medical histories and details of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Preparing the ultrasound machines for use and then cleaning and re-calibrating them
  • Moving patients to treatment rooms and ensuring their comfort
  • Utilizing equipment while limiting patient exposure to sound waves
  • Assessing results and determining necessity for additional testing

Sonographers must regularly assess the performance and safety of their equipment. They also are held to a high professional standard and code of conduct as health practitioners. So as to sustain that degree of professionalism and remain current with medical knowledge, they are mandated to enroll in continuing education programs on an ongoing basis.

Sonogram Technician Degree Programs Available

Gipsy PA ultrasound technician performing sonographySonogram tech students have the option to acquire either an Associate Degree or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will normally involve about 18 months to 2 years to complete based upon the program and class load. A Bachelor’s Degree will take longer at as long as 4 years to finalize. Another alternative for individuals who have already received a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have earned a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a related medical field, you can instead choose a certificate program that will require only 12 to 18 months to complete. One thing to keep in mind is that most ultrasound technician schools do have a practical training element as part of their course of study. It can often be fulfilled by taking part in an internship program which many schools sponsor with Gipsy PA clinics and hospitals. When you have graduated from any of the degree or certificate programs, you will then need to satisfy the certification or licensing prerequisites in Pennsylvania or whichever state you decide to work in.

Sonogram Tech Online Degrees

student attending online sonography class in Gipsy PAAs earlier discussed, virtually all sonogram tech colleges have a clinical component to their programs. So while you can obtain a degree or certificate online, a significant portion of the training will be either conducted in an on campus laboratory or at an authorized off campus facility. Clinical training can often be fulfilled by means of an internship at a local Gipsy PA outpatient clinic, hospital or private practice. However the remainder of the classes and training may be accessed online in your Gipsy home. This is especially beneficial for those individuals that continue working while getting their degrees. Plus online programs are frequently less expensive than on campus alternatives. Expenditures for commuting and study materials can be reduced also. But just as with every sonography college you are reviewing, verify that the online school you select is accredited. One of the most highly regarded accrediting organizations is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is particularly important for certification, licensing and finding employment (more on accreditation later). So if you are disciplined enough to attend classes outside of the classroom in the convenience of your own home, then online classes may be the right option for you.

Questions to Ask Ultrasound Technician Colleges

Questions to ask Gipsy PA ultrasound technician schoolsOnce you have decided on the type of certificate or degree that you would like to obtain, you can initiate the procedure of reviewing and comparing sonogram tech colleges. You may first want to choose whether you will attend classes online or travel to a school campus in the Gipsy PA area. Of course location will be significant if you choose the latter, and the price of tuition no doubt will be an important qualifier also. But there are other factors that you must also take into account, for instance if the colleges are accredited and if they sponsor internship programs. So in order to complete your due diligence so that you can arrive at your ultimate selection, following are some questions that you may want to ask each ultrasound tech school prior to making a decision.

Are the Ultrasound Technician Colleges Accredited? The majority of ultrasound technician schools have acquired some type of accreditation, whether national or regional. However, it’s still crucial to confirm that the program and school are accredited. One of the most highly respected accrediting agencies in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Schools earning accreditation from the JRC-DMS have gone through a detailed assessment of their instructors and educational materials. If the school is online it may also receive accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which targets distance or online education. All accrediting agencies should be recognized by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Besides guaranteeing a quality education, accreditation will also assist in acquiring financial assistance and student loans, which are frequently not accessible for non-accredited programs. Accreditation might also be a pre-requisite for licensing and certification as required. And a number of Gipsy PA health facilities will only hire a graduate of an accredited school for entry level positions.

Are Internship Programs Sponsored? Ask if the ultrasound tech schools you are evaluating have partnerships with Gipsy PA clinics or hospitals for internship programs. Not only are internships a terrific means to get hands on training in a clinical environment, they are also a way to fulfill the clinical training requirement for the majority of programs. As an ancillary benefit, they may assist graduates and students establish professional connections in the Gipsy healthcare community and help with job placement.

Is Job Placement Help available? You will probably want to secure employment quickly after graduation, but getting that first job in a new profession can be difficult without support. Find out if the sonographer programs you are considering have job placement programs and what their success rates are. High and rapid placement rates are a good sign that the schools have large networks and great relationships with Pennsylvania healthcare employers. It also corroborates that their students are well regarded and sought after.

Where is the School Located? For a lot of students, the school they decide on will have to be within driving distance of their Gipsy PA residence. Students who have decided to attend online classes obviously will not have to trouble themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of local internships will be of importance. One thing to keep in mind is that if you choose to enroll in a college that is out of state or perhaps out of your local area, you might be required to pay a higher tuition. State colleges usually charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges generally charge a higher tuition to those students that don’t reside within their districts.

How Large are the Classes ? Unless you are the sort of person that prefers to sit way in the rear of class or hide in the crowd, you will likely want a small class size. Smaller classes allow for more individual participation and personalized instruction. Ask the colleges you are reviewing what the average student to teacher ratio is for their classes. If practical you may want to sit in on one or more classes before making your ultimate determination. This will also give you an opportunity to converse with a few of the instructors and students to get their perspectives regarding the sonogram technician program as well.

Can the School Accommodate your Schedule? And last you need to confirm that the sonographer  school you ultimately select can furnish the class schedule you need. This is particularly essential if you decide to continue working while attending school. If you must schedule evening or weekend classes in the Gipsy PA area, make sure that they are offered. If you can only attend part-time, find out if that is an alternative and how many credit hours or courses you would need to carry. Also, learn what the procedure is for making up any classes that you may miss because of illness, work or family emergencies.
