Sonographer Work Summary

Glen Hope PA ultrasound tech with patientThere are various acceptable titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also referred to as sonogram techs, diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers) and ultrasound technologists. No matter what their title is, they all have the same primary job description, which is to perform diagnostic ultrasound testing on patients. Although many work as generalists there are specialties within the profession, for instance in pediatrics and cardiology. The majority work in Glen Hope PA hospitals, clinics, outpatient diagnostic imaging centers and even private practices. Typical daily job duties of an ultrasound technician may consist of:

  • Keeping records of patient case histories and details of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Prepping the ultrasound machines for usage and then sterilizing and re-calibrating them
  • Moving patients to treatment rooms and ensuring their comfort
  • Operating equipment while limiting patient exposure to sound waves
  • Reviewing the results and identifying necessity for additional testing

Ultrasound techs must regularly evaluate the safety and performance of their machines. They also are held to a high ethical standard and code of conduct as health practitioners. So as to sustain that degree of professionalism and remain current with medical knowledge, they are mandated to complete continuing education courses on a regular basis.

Ultrasound Tech Degrees Offered

Glen Hope PA ultrasound technician performing sonographyUltrasound tech enrollees have the opportunity to earn either an Associate Degree or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will normally take around 18 months to 2 years to complete depending on the course load and program. A Bachelor’s Degree will require more time at as long as 4 years to complete. Another alternative for those who have already earned a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have earned a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a relevant health sector, you can enroll in a certificate program that will take only 12 to 18 months to complete. One thing to keep in mind is that almost all sonographer colleges do have a practical training component as a portion of their curriculum. It can often be satisfied by participating in an internship program which many colleges set up with Glen Hope PA clinics and hospitals. When you have graduated from any of the certificate or degree programs, you will then need to fulfill the certification or licensing prerequisites in Pennsylvania or whatever state you decide to practice in.

Ultrasound Technician Online Classes

student attending online sonography class in Glen Hope PAAs previously mentioned, virtually all sonogram technician colleges have a clinical component to their programs. So although you can obtain a certificate or degree online, a substantial portion of the training will be either held in an on-campus lab or at an approved off-campus medical care provider. Clinical training can usually be satisfied by means of an internship at a local Glen Hope PA hospital, outpatient clinic or family practice. However the rest of the classes and training can be attended online in your Glen Hope home. This is especially convenient for those students that keep working while obtaining their degrees. In addition online schools are often less expensive than traditional alternatives. Expenses for study materials and commuting can be lessened also. But just as with any sonographer college you are reviewing, check that the online program you enroll in is accredited. One of the most highly regarded accrediting agencies is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is particularly important for licensing, certification and finding employment (more on accreditation later). So if you are dedicated enough to learn outside of the classroom in the comfort of your own home, then an online degree may be the ideal option for you.

Topics to Ask Sonography Programs

Questions to ask Glen Hope PA ultrasound technician schoolsOnce you have determined the type of certificate or degree that you would like to earn, you can begin the procedure of assessing and comparing ultrasound technician colleges. You may first want to decide whether you will access classes online or travel to a college campus in the Glen Hope PA area. Naturally location will be important if you choose the latter, and the cost of tuition undoubtedly will be an initial qualifier also. But there are additional variables that you must also take into account, such as if the schools are accredited and if they sponsor internships. So in order to perform your due diligence so that you can arrive at your ultimate selection, below are several questions that you need ask each ultrasound tech program prior to making a decision.

Are the Ultrasound Technician Programs Accredited? The majority of ultrasound tech colleges have acquired some type of accreditation, whether regional or national. However, it’s still crucial to make sure that the school and program are accredited. One of the most highly respected accrediting organizations in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Schools receiving accreditation from the JRC-DMS have gone through a detailed review of their teachers and course materials. If the school is online it might also earn accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which focuses on online or distance education. All accrediting agencies should be recognized by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. In addition to ensuring a premium education, accreditation will also help in acquiring financial aid and student loans, which are often not available for non-accredited schools. Accreditation can also be a pre-requisite for certification and licensing as required. And numerous Glen Hope PA health facilities will only hire a graduate of an accredited program for entry level openings.

Are Internships Provided? Ask if the ultrasound technician colleges you are assessing have partnerships with Glen Hope PA hospitals or clinics for internship programs. Not only are internships a terrific way to get practical training in a clinical environment, they are also a way to fulfill the clinical training requirement for the majority of programs. As an ancillary benefit, they can help graduates and students develop professional connections in the Glen Hope healthcare community and help with job placement.

Is Job Placement Assistance available? You will most likely want to hit the ground running after graduating, but getting that initial job in a new profession can be challenging without support. Find out if the sonographer programs you are assessing have job assistance programs and what their placement rates are. High and rapid placement rates are an excellent sign that the schools have sizable networks and good relationships with Pennsylvania healthcare employers. It also substantiates that their graduates are well regarded and in demand.

Where is the School Located? For a number of students, the school they decide on will need to be within travelling distance of their Glen Hope PA residence. Individuals who have decided to attend online classes obviously will not have to worry themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of area internships will be of concern. Something to bear in mind is that if you choose to enroll in a college that is out of state or perhaps out of your local area, you may need to pay a higher tuition. State colleges normally charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges generally charge a higher tuition to those students that don’t reside within their districts.

How Large are the Classes ? Unless you are the kind of person that prefers to sit way in the rear of class or hide in the crowd, you will probably want a smaller class size. Small classes allow for more individual participation and one-on-one instruction. Ask the schools you are looking at what the average teacher to student ratio is for their classes. If practical you may prefer to monitor one or more classes before making your ultimate determination. This will also give you a chance to converse with several of the instructors and students to get their opinions regarding the sonogram tech program also.

Can the School Accommodate your Schedule? And last you must confirm that the ultrasound tech  college you ultimately choose can offer the class schedule you need. This is particularly important if you choose to continue working while you attend classes. If you need to schedule night or weekend classes in the Glen Hope PA area, verify that they are offered. If you can only attend part-time, verify if that is an alternative and how many courses or credit hours you would need to carry. Also, ask what the procedure is for making up any classes that you might miss because of work, illness or family obligations.
