Hastings PA ultrasound tech with patientThere are various acceptable titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also called ultrasound technologists, sonogram techs, and diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers). Regardless of name, they all have the same primary job function, which is to implement diagnostic ultrasound techniques on patients. Although many practice as generalists there are specialties within the profession, for instance in pediatrics and cardiology. Most work in Hastings PA hospitals, clinics, outpatient diagnostic imaging centers and even private practices. Common daily job duties of a sonogram tech may involve:

  • Maintaining records of patient medical histories and specifics of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Readying the ultrasound machines for use and then cleaning and recalibrating them
  • Moving patients to treatment rooms and ensuring their comfort
  • Utilizing equipment while minimizing patient exposure to sound waves
  • Reviewing the results and identifying need for additional testing

Sonographers must regularly gauge the safety and performance of their equipment. They also must adhere to a high professional standard and code of conduct as medical practitioners. In order to sustain that level of professionalism and remain current with medical knowledge, they are required to complete continuing education programs on a regular basis.

Ultrasound Tech Degrees Available

Hastings PA ultrasound technician performing sonographySonogram tech enrollees have the choice to earn either an Associate Degree or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will generally require about 18 months to 2 years to complete depending on the program and class load. A Bachelor’s Degree will take longer at up to four years to complete. Another alternative for those who have already obtained a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have obtained a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a relevant medical field, you can instead choose a certificate program that will require just 12 to 18 months to complete. One thing to keep in mind is that most ultrasound technician schools do have a clinical training component as a portion of their course of study. It often may be fulfilled by participating in an internship program which many colleges set up with Hastings PA clinics and hospitals. After you have graduated from any of the degree or certificate programs, you will then need to fulfill the certification or licensing requirements in Pennsylvania or whatever state you choose to work in.

Online Ultrasound Technician Schools

student attending online sonography class in Hastings PAAs earlier discussed, virtually all sonogram tech schools have a clinical requirement to their programs. So while you can receive a degree or certificate online, a significant part of the training will be either carried out in an on campus laboratory or at an approved off-campus facility. Practical training can typically be satisfied through an internship at a local Hastings PA outpatient clinic, hospital or family practice. However the rest of the classes and training can be accessed online in your Hastings home. This is especially convenient for those individuals that continue working while getting their degrees. Plus online colleges are often more affordable than on-campus alternatives. Costs for study materials and commuting may be decreased as well. But similarly as with any sonography college you are reviewing, confirm that the online program you ultimately pick is accredited. One of the most highly regarded accrediting agencies is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is especially significant for certification, licensing and finding employment (more on accreditation later). So if you are motivated enough to attend classes outside of the classroom in the comfort of your own home, then an online school may be the right choice for you.

Subjects to Ask Sonography Schools

Questions to ask Hastings PA ultrasound technician schoolsAfter you have determined the type of certificate or degree that you would like to obtain, you can begin the process of evaluating and comparing sonogram technician colleges. You may first want to choose whether you will attend classes online or commute to a college campus in the Hastings PA area. Clearly location will be important if you decide on the latter, and the price of tuition undoubtedly will be an important qualification as well. But there are additional factors that you should also take into account, for instance if the programs are accredited and if they offer internships. So in order to carry out your due diligence so that you can arrive at your ultimate selection, following are several questions that you may want to ask each sonographer college prior to making a decision.

Are the Ultrasound Technician Programs Accredited? Most sonogram tech schools have earned some form of accreditation, whether national or regional. Even so, it’s still imperative to make sure that the school and program are accredited. Among the most highly respected accrediting agencies in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Programs earning accreditation from the JRC-DMS have gone through an extensive review of their instructors and course materials. If the school is online it can also receive accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which targets distance or online education. All accrediting agencies should be recognized by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Besides ensuring a quality education, accreditation will also assist in obtaining financial assistance and student loans, which are frequently not accessible for non-accredited schools. Accreditation can also be a pre-requisite for licensing and certification as required. And many Hastings PA employers will only hire graduates of an accredited program for entry level openings.

Are Internships Offered? Inquire if the sonogram tech colleges you are assessing have relationships with Hastings PA clinics or hospitals for internship programs. Not only are internships a terrific way to receive practical experience in a clinical environment, they are additionally a way to satisfy the clinical training requirement for the majority of programs. As a secondary benefit, they can assist graduates and students develop professional relationships in the Hastings healthcare community and assist with obtaining employment.

Is Job Placement Help available? You will undoubtedly want to hit the ground running after graduation, but finding that first job in a new profession can be difficult without assistance. Find out if the ultrasound tech schools you are interviewing have job assistance programs and what their success rates are. Rapid and high placement rates are a good indication that the schools have large networks and good relationships with Pennsylvania healthcare employers. It also substantiates that their graduates are well regarded and in demand.

Where is the School Located? For a number of students, the college they pick will have to be within travelling distance of their Hastings PA home. Those who have chosen to attend classes online obviously will not have to worry themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of area internships will be of concern. One thing to bear in mind is that if you decide to enroll in a program that is out of state or perhaps out of your local area, you might need to pay a higher tuition. State colleges generally charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges often charge a higher tuition to those students that live outside of their districts.

How Large are the Classes ? Unless you are the sort of person that prefers to sit far in the rear of the classroom or hide in the crowd, you will undoubtedly want a small class size. Smaller classes allow for more individual participation and personalized instruction. Ask the schools you are looking at what the average student to teacher ratio is for their classrooms. If practical you may prefer to sit in on one or more classes before making your ultimate decision. This will also give you a chance to talk with several of the students and instructors to get their perspectives regarding the sonogram technician program as well.

Does the College Accommodate your Schedule? And finally you must confirm that the sonographer  college you finally pick can provide the class schedule you need. This is especially crucial if you decide to continue working while attending school. If you must schedule night or weekend classes in the Hastings PA area, make sure that they are available. If you can only enroll on a part-time basis, verify if that is an alternative and how many courses or credit hours you would have to enroll in. Also, find out what the protocol is for making up any classes that you may miss as a result of work, illness or family obligations.
