Sonogram Tech Job Summary

Hatfield PA ultrasound tech with patientThere are multiple acceptable titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also called sonogram techs, diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers) and ultrasound technologists. No matter what their title is, they all have the same primary job function, which is to carry out diagnostic ultrasound testing on patients. Although many work as generalists there are specializations within the profession, for example in cardiology and pediatrics. Most work in Hatfield PA hospitals, clinics, outpatient diagnostic imaging centers and even private practices. Typical daily work duties of an ultrasound technician may include:

  • Maintaining records of patient medical histories and specifics of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Readying the ultrasound machines for testing and then sterilizing and re-calibrating them
  • Escorting patients to treatment rooms and ensuring their comfort
  • Using equipment while limiting patient exposure to sound waves
  • Reviewing the results and determining need for supplemental testing

Sonographers must regularly gauge the performance and safety of their machines. They also must adhere to a high professional standard and code of conduct as medical practitioners. So as to maintain that level of professionalism and stay current with medical knowledge, they are required to enroll in continuing education courses on a regular basis.

Sonogram Tech Degrees Offered

Hatfield PA ultrasound technician performing sonographySonogram tech enrollees have the opportunity to earn either an Associate Degree or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will generally require around 18 months to 2 years to accomplish dependent on the course load and program. A Bachelor’s Degree will take longer at as long as 4 years to complete. Another option for individuals who have previously received a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have obtained a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a related health sector, you can enroll in a certificate program that will take only 12 to 18 months to complete. Something to keep in mind is that most sonographer schools do have a clinical training element as part of their curriculum. It can often be satisfied by taking part in an internship program which many colleges set up through Hatfield PA hospitals and clinics. Once you have graduated from any of the certificate or degree programs, you will then need to satisfy the certification or licensing prerequisites in Pennsylvania or whatever state you choose to work in.

Online Sonographer Programs

student attending online sonography class in Hatfield PAAs previously mentioned, nearly all ultrasound technician colleges have a practical requirement to their programs. So while you can earn a degree or certificate online, a substantial portion of the training will be either carried out in an on-campus lab or at a sponsored off campus facility. Clinical training can often be fulfilled through an internship at a local Hatfield PA outpatient clinic, hospital or private practice. However the rest of the training and classes may be accessed online in your Hatfield home. This is especially beneficial for those students that continue working while earning their degrees. Plus online programs are often more affordable than on campus options. Costs for study materials and commuting can be reduced as well. But just as with any ultrasound tech school you are looking at, verify that the online program you ultimately pick is accredited. One of the most highly regarded accrediting agencies is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is especially crucial for certification, licensing and job placement (more on accreditation later). So if you are dedicated enough to learn outside of the classroom in the convenience of your own home, then an online degree could be the ideal option for you.

Topics to Ask Ultrasound Technician Schools

Questions to ask Hatfield PA ultrasound technician schoolsNow that you have decided on the type of degree or certificate that you would like to obtain, you can initiate the procedure of evaluating and comparing sonogram tech schools. You may first want to decide whether you would rather access classes online or commute to a college campus in the Hatfield PA area. Certainly location will be important if you decide on the latter, and the price of tuition undoubtedly will be an initial qualifier also. But there are additional variables that you should also take into consideration, for example if the programs are accredited and if they offer internship programs. Therefore in order to carry out your due diligence so that you can arrive at your ultimate selection, below are some questions that you may want to ask each ultrasound tech college prior to making a decision.

Are the Ultrasound Technician Colleges Accredited? A large number of ultrasound tech colleges have received some type of accreditation, whether regional or national. Nevertheless, it’s still imperative to verify that the program and school are accredited. One of the most highly respected accrediting organizations in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Schools obtaining accreditation from the JRC-DMS have gone through a rigorous assessment of their instructors and educational materials. If the college is online it may also obtain accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which focuses on distance or online education. All accrediting agencies should be recognized by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Along with ensuring a quality education, accreditation will also assist in securing financial aid and student loans, which are frequently not available for non-accredited colleges. Accreditation might also be a pre-requisite for certification and licensing as required. And numerous Hatfield PA employers will only hire a graduate of an accredited program for entry level jobs.

Are Internships Sponsored? Inquire if the ultrasound tech programs you are interested in have relationships with Hatfield PA hospitals or clinics for internship programs. Internships are not only an excellent manner to get practical training in a clinical setting, they are also a way to satisfy the clinical training requirement for most programs. As a secondary benefit, they can help graduates and students develop professional relationships in the Hatfield healthcare community and help with obtaining employment.

Is Job Placement Help available? You will most likely want to hit the ground running after graduating, but finding that first job in a new field can be difficult without help. Ask if the sonographer programs you are considering have job placement programs and what their placement rates are. High and rapid placement rates are a good indication that the schools have sizable networks and good relationships with Pennsylvania healthcare employers. It also corroborates that their graduates are well regarded and sought after.

Where is the College Located? For a number of students, the college they choose will need to be within travelling distance of their Hatfield PA residence. Individuals who have decided to attend online classes naturally will not have to worry themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of local internships will be of concern. Something to bear in mind is that if you choose to enroll in a program that is out of state or perhaps out of your local area, you might need to pay a higher tuition. State colleges usually charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges frequently charge a higher tuition to those students that don’t reside within their districts.

What Size are the Classes ? Unless you are the kind of person that prefers to sit far in the rear of class or get lost in the crowd, you will undoubtedly want a smaller class size. Small classes allow for more individual participation and personalized instruction. Ask the colleges you are researching what the average student to teacher ratio is for their classes. If practical you may want to sit in on one or more classes before making your ultimate decision. This will also give you an opportunity to speak with some of the students and instructors to get their perspectives regarding the sonogram tech program also.

Can the School Accommodate your Schedule? And finally you need to verify that the ultrasound tech  school you finally pick can furnish the class schedule you need. This is especially important if you decide to continue working while attending school. If you need to schedule night or weekend classes in the Hatfield PA area, verify that they are offered. If you can only enroll on a part-time basis, verify if that is an option and how many courses or credit hours you would need to enroll in. Also, ask what the procedure is for making up any classes that you may miss due to illness, work or family emergencies.
