Sonographer Work Summary

Hiller PA ultrasound tech with patientThere are several acceptable titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also called ultrasound technologists, sonogram techs, and diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers). Regardless of name, they all have the same primary job description, which is to perform diagnostic ultrasound testing on patients. Even though a number of techs practice as generalists there are specializations within the field, for example in cardiology and pediatrics. The majority work in Hiller PA hospitals, clinics, outpatient diagnostic imaging centers and even private practices. Standard daily work tasks of a sonogram tech can consist of:

  • Maintaining records of patient medical histories and specifics of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Preparing the ultrasound machines for usage and then sterilizing and re-calibrating them
  • Transferring patients to treatment rooms and ensuring their comfort
  • Using equipment while minimizing patient exposure to sound waves
  • Reviewing the results and determining necessity for further testing

Ultrasound techs must frequently evaluate the safety and performance of their machines. They also must adhere to a high ethical standard and code of conduct as medical practitioners. So as to maintain that degree of professionalism and remain current with medical knowledge, they are required to enroll in continuing education programs on a regular basis.

Ultrasound Technician Degree Programs Available

Hiller PA ultrasound technician performing sonographySonogram technician enrollees have the opportunity to acquire either an Associate or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will typically take around 18 months to 2 years to finish depending on the course load and program. A Bachelor’s Degree will require more time at as long as 4 years to complete. Another option for those who have already obtained a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have earned a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a relevant health field, you can enroll in a certificate program that will require just 12 to 18 months to complete. One thing to consider is that the majority of ultrasound technician schools do have a practical training element as a portion of their course of study. It can often be fulfilled by entering into an internship program which numerous colleges organize through Hiller PA hospitals and clinics. When you have graduated from one of the certificate or degree programs, you will then have to fulfill the certification or licensing requirements in Pennsylvania or whatever state you decide to work in.

Online Ultrasound Technician Degrees

student attending online sonography class in Hiller PAAs previously mentioned, almost all sonogram tech schools have a practical requirement to their programs. So although you can obtain a degree or certificate online, a substantial portion of the training will be either carried out in an on-campus lab or at an approved off campus medical care provider. Practical training can usually be satisfied through an internship at a local Hiller PA outpatient clinic, hospital or family practice. But the rest of the training and classes can be attended online in your Hiller home. This is particularly beneficial for those students that keep working while getting their degrees. Plus online schools are frequently less expensive than on-campus alternatives. Costs for study materials and commuting can be decreased also. But just as with any sonography school you are considering, check that the online program you choose is accredited. Among the most highly regarded accrediting agencies is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is especially crucial for certification, licensing and job placement (more on accreditation later). So if you are motivated enough to attend classes away from the classroom in the comfort of your own home, then an online degree may be the ideal choice for you.

What to Ask Ultrasound Tech Programs

Questions to ask Hiller PA ultrasound technician schoolsAfter you have determined which certificate or degree that you would like to earn, you can start the process of assessing and comparing sonogram tech schools. You may first want to decide whether you would rather attend classes online or commute to a school campus in the Hiller PA area. Naturally location will be important if you choose the latter, and the price of tuition undoubtedly will be an important qualifier as well. But there are additional factors that you must also take into account, for instance if the colleges are accredited and if they sponsor internship programs. Therefore in order to complete your due diligence so that you can make your final selection, below are some questions that you need ask each ultrasound tech school prior to making a decision.

Are the Ultrasound Technician Programs Accredited? The majority of sonogram technician colleges have received some type of accreditation, whether national or regional. However, it’s still important to verify that the program and school are accredited. One of the most highly respected accrediting organizations in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Schools obtaining accreditation from the JRC-DMS have gone through a rigorous examination of their teachers and course materials. If the college is online it may also receive accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which targets distance or online learning. All accrediting organizations should be recognized by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Along with guaranteeing a superior education, accreditation will also help in securing financial aid and student loans, which are often not available for non-accredited programs. Accreditation can also be a pre-requisite for certification and licensing as required. And a number of Hiller PA health facilities will only hire a graduate of an accredited college for entry-level openings.

Are Internship Programs Sponsored? Inquire if the sonogram tech schools you are interested in have relationships with Hiller PA hospitals or clinics for internship programs. Internships are not only a terrific means to get hands on experience in a clinical setting, they are additionally a means to fulfill the practical training requirement for the majority of programs. As a supplemental benefit, they can assist graduates and students develop professional connections in the Hiller healthcare community and assist with job placement.

Is Job Placement Assistance available? You will undoubtedly wish to hit the ground running after graduating, but getting that first job in a new profession can be difficult without help. Ask if the sonographer schools you are assessing have job placement programs and what their success rates are. Rapid and high placement rates are a good indication that the schools have sizable networks and good relationships with Pennsylvania healthcare employers. It also confirms that their graduates are well regarded and in demand.

Where is the School Located? For a lot of students, the college they decide on will have to be within driving distance of their Hiller PA home. Those who have opted to attend classes online obviously will not have to concern themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of area internships will be of importance. One thing to keep in mind is that if you decide to enroll in a college that is out of state or perhaps out of your local area, you may need to pay a higher tuition. State colleges often charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges commonly charge a higher tuition for those students that live outside of their districts.

How Large are the Classes ? Unless you are the kind of person that likes to sit way in the back of class or hide in the crowd, you will probably want a small class size. Smaller classes permit more individual participation and one-on-one instruction. Ask the colleges you are reviewing what the average teacher to student ratio is for their classrooms. If practical you may prefer to sit in on one or more classes before making your final determination. This will also give you an opportunity to speak with a few of the students and instructors to get their opinions regarding the ultrasound tech program also.

Does the School Accommodate your Schedule? And finally you need to verify that the ultrasound tech  college you finally choose can offer the class schedule you need. This is especially essential if you opt to continue working while you attend classes. If you must schedule night or weekend classes in the Hiller PA area, verify that they are available. If you can only enroll on a part-time basis, check if that is an alternative and how many courses or credit hours you would have to enroll in. Also, ask what the protocol is for making up any classes that you might miss because of illness, work or family obligations.
