Sonographer Job Summary

Hollsopple PA ultrasound tech with patientThere are various acceptable titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also referred to as ultrasound technologists, sonogram techs, and diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers). Regardless of name, they all have the same primary job description, which is to perform diagnostic ultrasound testing on patients. Although a number of techs practice as generalists there are specialties within the field, for example in cardiology and pediatrics. Most work in Hollsopple PA hospitals, clinics, private practices or outpatient diagnostic imaging centers. Standard daily work tasks of a sonogram tech can involve:

  • Maintaining records of patient case histories and details of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Preparing the ultrasound machines for use and then cleaning and re-calibrating them
  • Moving patients to treatment rooms and ensuring their comfort
  • Utilizing equipment while limiting patient exposure to sound waves
  • Reviewing the results and determining necessity for further testing

Sonographers must routinely assess the performance and safety of their equipment. They also must adhere to a high professional standard and code of conduct as health practitioners. In order to sustain that level of professionalism and remain current with medical knowledge, they are mandated to enroll in continuing education programs on an ongoing basis.

Sonogram Technician Degrees Offered

Hollsopple PA ultrasound technician performing sonographyUltrasound tech students have the option to acquire either an Associate Degree or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will normally require around 18 months to 2 years to accomplish depending on the course load and program. A Bachelor’s Degree will take longer at up to 4 years to finish. Another option for those who have already earned a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have received a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a relevant medical field, you can enroll in a certificate program that will take only 12 to 18 months to finish. Something to bear in mind is that almost all sonographer programs do have a clinical training element as a portion of their course of study. It often may be satisfied by entering into an internship program which numerous schools organize through Hollsopple PA hospitals and clinics. When you have graduated from any of the certificate or degree programs, you will then need to fulfill the licensing or certification requirements in Pennsylvania or whichever state you choose to practice in.

Sonogram Tech Online Classes

student attending online sonography class in Hollsopple PAAs previously mentioned, nearly all sonogram technician schools have a practical requirement to their programs. So while you can earn a degree or certificate online, a substantial part of the training will be either conducted in an on campus lab or at an authorized off-campus medical care provider. Clinical training can usually be fulfilled through an internship at a local Hollsopple PA outpatient clinic, hospital or private practice. However the rest of the training and classes may be attended online in your Hollsopple home. This is especially convenient for those individuals that continue working while obtaining their degrees. Plus online programs are many times less expensive than on campus options. Expenditures for study materials and commuting can be reduced also. But similarly as with every sonographer program you are looking at, verify that the online school you ultimately pick is accredited. Among the most highly respected accrediting organizations is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is especially important for licensing, certification and finding employment (more on accreditation later). So if you are motivated enough to learn outside of the classroom in the convenience of your own home, then online classes could be the ideal choice for you.

Subjects to Ask Sonography Schools

Questions to ask Hollsopple PA ultrasound technician schoolsAs soon as you have decided on the type of degree or certificate that you would like to obtain, you can begin the procedure of assessing and comparing sonogram technician colleges. You may first want to choose whether you will attend classes online or travel to a school campus in the Hollsopple PA area. Clearly location will be important if you select the latter, and the price of tuition no doubt will be an important qualification also. But there are additional variables that you should also take into consideration, for instance if the schools are accredited and if they sponsor internships. So in order to carry out your due diligence so that you can make your ultimate selection, below are a few questions that you may want to ask each ultrasound tech program before deciding.

Are the Ultrasound Technician Schools Accredited? The majority of ultrasound tech schools have obtained some form of accreditation, whether regional or national. However, it’s still crucial to confirm that the school and program are accredited. Among the most highly regarded accrediting agencies in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Schools obtaining accreditation from the JRC-DMS have gone through a rigorous examination of their teachers and educational materials. If the program is online it can also earn accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which targets distance or online education. All accrediting organizations should be acknowledged by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Along with guaranteeing a quality education, accreditation will also help in acquiring financial assistance and student loans, which are frequently not available for non-accredited colleges. Accreditation can also be a pre-requisite for certification and licensing as required. And a number of Hollsopple PA health facilities will only hire graduates of an accredited program for entry-level positions.

Are Internship Programs Provided? Find out if the ultrasound technician programs you are evaluating have associations with Hollsopple PA clinics or hospitals for internship programs. Not only are internships an excellent manner to get practical experience in a clinical setting, they are additionally a means to satisfy the clinical training requirement for the majority of programs. As a supplemental benefit, they may help students and graduates form professional relationships in the Hollsopple health care community and help with job placement.

Is Job Placement Help available? You will most likely wish to hit the ground running after graduating, but getting that first job in a new field can be challenging without help. Find out if the sonographer programs you are considering have job assistance programs and what their success rates are. Rapid and high placement rates are a good indication that the schools have substantial networks and great relationships with Pennsylvania healthcare employers. It also substantiates that their students are highly regarded and in demand.

Where is the Program Located? For a lot of students, the college they pick will need to be within travelling distance of their Hollsopple PA residence. Individuals who have decided to attend classes online obviously will not have to concern themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of local internships will be of importance. Something to consider is that if you choose to enroll in a college that is out of state or even out of your local area, you may need to pay a higher tuition. State colleges normally charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges commonly charge a higher tuition to those students that don’t reside within their districts.

How Big are the Classes ? Unless you are the sort of person that likes to sit far in the back of the classroom or get lost in the crowd, you will undoubtedly want a small class size. Smaller classes permit more individual participation and personalized instruction. Ask the colleges you are researching what the average teacher to student ratio is for their classes. If practical you may want to sit in on one or more classes before making your final determination. This will also give you a chance to speak with some of the students and instructors to get their perspectives regarding the sonogram tech program as well.

Does the School Accommodate your Schedule? And finally you need to verify that the sonographer  college you finally pick can offer the class schedule you need. This is particularly important if you choose to continue working while attending school. If you must schedule evening or weekend classes in the Hollsopple PA area, check that they are offered. If you can only attend part-time, find out if that is an alternative and how many credit hours or courses you would have to carry. Also, find out what the procedure is for making up any classes that you might miss as a result of illness, work or family emergencies.
