So it’s extremely important that you research each program in order to assess and compare your choices. But just where does one begin? Many prospective students will start by searching for colleges that are within commuting distance of their residences and then by comparing tuition. Certainly cost and location need to be considered when making a decision, but there are additional important factors also. Sonographer Job Description

Irwin PA ultrasound tech with patientThere are multiple professional titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also called ultrasound technologists, sonogram techs, and diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers). Regardless of name, they all have the same basic job function, which is to perform diagnostic ultrasound testing on patients. While a number of techs work as generalists there are specialties within the field, for instance in cardiology and pediatrics. The majority work in Irwin PA clinics, hospitals, outpatient diagnostic imaging centers and even private practices. Typical daily job duties of an ultrasound tech can involve:

  • Keeping records of patient case histories and details of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Readying the ultrasound machines for use and then sterilizing and recalibrating them
  • Moving patients to treatment rooms and making them comfortable
  • Using equipment while minimizing patient exposure to sound waves
  • Reviewing the results and determining need for additional testing

Ultrasound techs must frequently assess the safety and performance of their equipment. They also are held to a high ethical standard and code of conduct as medical practitioners. In order to sustain that degree of professionalism and stay up to date with medical knowledge, they are required to complete continuing education courses on a regular basis.

Ultrasound Technician Degrees Offered

Irwin PA ultrasound technician performing sonographyUltrasound technician students have the option to earn either an Associate or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will typically require about 18 months to 2 years to complete dependent on the program and class load. A Bachelor’s Degree will require more time at as long as 4 years to complete. Another option for individuals who have already received a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have received a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a relevant medical sector, you can enroll in a certificate program that will require only 12 to 18 months to finish. One thing to keep in mind is that most sonographer colleges do have a clinical training element as part of their curriculum. It can often be satisfied by entering into an internship program which many colleges set up with Irwin PA hospitals and clinics. When you have graduated from any of the degree or certificate programs, you will then need to fulfill the certification or licensing prerequisites in Pennsylvania or whatever state you decide to practice in.

Online Sonographer Programs

student attending online sonography class in Irwin PAAs earlier discussed, almost all ultrasound tech schools have a clinical component to their programs. So while you can obtain a degree or certificate online, a significant portion of the training will be either carried out in an on-campus laboratory or at an approved off campus facility. Clinical training can typically be fulfilled by means of an internship at a local Irwin PA outpatient clinic, hospital or family practice. However the remainder of the classes and training may be accessed online in your Irwin home. This is particularly convenient for those students that keep working while obtaining their degrees. Plus online colleges are frequently less costly than on-campus options. Expenses for commuting and study materials can be decreased also. But just as with every ultrasound tech school you are considering, confirm that the online program you enroll in is accredited. One of the most highly respected accrediting agencies is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is particularly important for certification, licensing and job placement (more on accreditation later). So if you are dedicated enough to learn away from the classroom in the comfort of your own home, then an online school may be the ideal choice for you.

Points to Ask Ultrasound Technician Colleges

Questions to ask Irwin PA ultrasound technician schoolsOnce you have decided on which certificate or degree that you would like to earn, you can initiate the procedure of assessing and comparing ultrasound tech schools. You may first want to decide whether you would rather attend classes online or commute to a college campus in the Irwin PA area. Obviously location will be critical if you choose the latter, and the price of tuition no doubt will be an initial qualification as well. But there are additional variables that you must also take into account, such as if the schools are accredited and if they sponsor internship programs. Therefore in order to complete your due diligence so that you can arrive at your ultimate selection, following are some questions that you may want to ask each ultrasound tech program prior to making a decision.

Are the Ultrasound Technician Colleges Accredited? The majority of ultrasound tech schools have earned some form of accreditation, whether regional or national. Nevertheless, it’s still imperative to make sure that the program and school are accredited. Among the most highly respected accrediting organizations in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Programs earning accreditation from the JRC-DMS have undergone a detailed review of their instructors and educational materials. If the school is online it might also obtain accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which targets distance or online learning. All accrediting organizations should be recognized by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Along with guaranteeing a quality education, accreditation will also assist in acquiring financial aid and student loans, which are many times not accessible for non-accredited colleges. Accreditation may also be a pre-requisite for licensing and certification as required. And numerous Irwin PA employers will only hire a graduate of an accredited school for entry level positions.

Are Internship Programs Offered? Find out if the sonogram technician programs you are reviewing have relationships with Irwin PA hospitals or clinics for internship programs. Internships are not only an excellent manner to obtain hands on training in a clinical setting, they are additionally a means to satisfy the clinical training requirement for the majority of programs. As an ancillary benefit, they can help graduates and students develop professional connections in the Irwin health care community and help with job placement.

Is Job Placement Assistance available? You will most likely wish to secure employment quickly after graduation, but getting that first job in a new profession can be challenging without help. Find out if the sonographer programs you are considering have job assistance programs and what their placement rates are. Rapid and high placement rates are an excellent sign that the schools have sizable networks and great relationships with Pennsylvania healthcare employers. It also corroborates that their graduates are well regarded and in demand.

Where is the College Located? For many students, the college they choose will have to be within travelling distance of their Irwin PA residence. Students who have opted to attend online classes obviously will not have to concern themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of local internships will be of importance. One thing to consider is that if you decide to enroll in a college that is out of state or even out of your local area, you may need to pay a higher tuition. State colleges commonly charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges often charge a higher tuition to those students that don’t reside within their districts.

What Size are the Classes ? Unless you are the sort of person that prefers to sit far in the rear of the classroom or hide in the crowd, you will likely prefer a small class size. Smaller classes enable more individual participation and one-on-one instruction. Ask the colleges you are reviewing what the typical teacher to student ratio is for their classes. If practical you may prefer to sit in on one or more classes before making your ultimate determination. This will also give you a chance to talk with a few of the instructors and students to get their opinions regarding the ultrasound technician program also.

Can the Program Accommodate your Schedule? And last you need to confirm that the ultrasound tech  program you ultimately choose can provide the class schedule you need. This is especially essential if you choose to continue working while attending school. If you need to schedule evening or weekend classes in the Irwin PA area, check that they are offered. If you can only attend part-time, verify if that is an alternative and how many credit hours or courses you would need to enroll in. Also, ask what the procedure is for making up any classes that you might miss as a result of illness, work or family emergencies.
