Ultrasound Tech Occupation Description

Jamison PA ultrasound tech with patientThere are various acceptable titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also called sonogram techs, diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers) and ultrasound technologists. No matter what their title is, they all have the same primary job function, which is to implement diagnostic ultrasound techniques on patients. Although a number of techs work as generalists there are specialties within the profession, for example in cardiology and pediatrics. Most work in Jamison PA hospitals, clinics, outpatient diagnostic imaging centers and even private practices. Standard daily work tasks of an ultrasound technician can consist of:

  • Preserving records of patient case histories and details of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Preparing the ultrasound machines for usage and then sterilizing and re-calibrating them
  • Transferring patients to treatment rooms and ensuring their comfort
  • Operating equipment while minimizing patient exposure to sound waves
  • Reviewing the results and identifying necessity for additional testing

Ultrasound techs must frequently assess the safety and performance of their equipment. They also must adhere to a high professional standard and code of conduct as medical practitioners. So as to maintain that degree of professionalism and remain current with medical knowledge, they are required to enroll in continuing education training on a regular basis.

Sonogram Technician Degrees Offered

Jamison PA ultrasound technician performing sonographyUltrasound technician enrollees have the opportunity to acquire either an Associate Degree or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will typically involve about 18 months to 2 years to accomplish dependent on the course load and program. A Bachelor’s Degree will take longer at up to four years to finalize. Another option for those who have previously received a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have earned a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a related health sector, you can instead choose a certificate program that will require only 12 to 18 months to finish. One thing to keep in mind is that almost all ultrasound technician colleges do have a clinical training element as a portion of their curriculum. It can often be fulfilled by taking part in an internship program which numerous schools set up through Jamison PA hospitals and clinics. Once you have graduated from any of the certificate or degree programs, you will then need to satisfy the licensing or certification prerequisites in Pennsylvania or whatever state you decide to practice in.

Sonographer Online Classes

student attending online sonography class in Jamison PAAs previously mentioned, nearly all sonogram technician colleges have a practical component to their programs. So while you can obtain a degree or certificate online, a significant part of the training will be either held in an on-campus lab or at an authorized off-campus facility. Practical training can often be satisfied by means of an internship at a local Jamison PA hospital, outpatient clinic or family practice. But the remainder of the training and classes may be accessed online in your Jamison home. This is particularly beneficial for those individuals that keep working while earning their degrees. Plus online programs are many times less expensive than on-campus options. Expenses for commuting and study materials can be decreased as well. But just as with every sonography college you are reviewing, make sure that the online program you ultimately pick is accredited. One of the most highly respected accrediting organizations is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is particularly crucial for certification, licensing and finding employment (more on accreditation later). So if you are dedicated enough to attend classes outside of the classroom in the comfort of your own home, then an online school could be the ideal choice for you.

Questions to Ask Ultrasound Tech Programs

Questions to ask Jamison PA ultrasound technician schoolsOnce you have determined which certificate or degree that you would like to earn, you can initiate the procedure of evaluating and comparing sonogram tech colleges. You may first want to choose whether you would rather access classes online or commute to a school campus in the Jamison PA area. Clearly location will be significant if you choose the latter, and the cost of tuition no doubt will be an important qualification also. But there are other variables that you must also take into account, for example if the colleges are accredited and if they offer internships. Therefore in order to perform your due diligence so that you can arrive at your ultimate selection, below are a few questions that you need ask each sonography college prior to making a decision.

Are the Sonogram Tech Colleges Accredited? The majority of ultrasound technician schools have earned some type of accreditation, whether regional or national. Even so, it’s still crucial to make sure that the program and school are accredited. Among the most highly regarded accrediting agencies in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Schools earning accreditation from the JRC-DMS have undergone a detailed evaluation of their instructors and course materials. If the college is online it might also obtain accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which targets online or distance education. All accrediting organizations should be acknowledged by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Along with guaranteeing a premium education, accreditation will also assist in acquiring financial assistance and student loans, which are frequently not accessible for non-accredited colleges. Accreditation might also be a pre-requisite for licensing and certification as required. And a number of Jamison PA health facilities will only hire graduates of an accredited program for entry level positions.

Are Internships Provided? Inquire if the ultrasound tech colleges you are evaluating have associations with Jamison PA clinics or hospitals for internship programs. Not only are internships a great means to obtain practical training in a clinical environment, they are also a way to fulfill the clinical training requirement for most programs. As an ancillary benefit, they can assist graduates and students establish professional connections in the Jamison healthcare community and help with job placement.

Is Job Placement Help provided? You will most likely want to hit the ground running after graduating, but getting that first job in a new profession can be difficult without help. Ask if the sonographer schools you are reviewing have job placement programs and what their placement rates are. Rapid and high placement rates are an excellent indication that the schools have sizable networks and good relationships with Pennsylvania healthcare employers. It also substantiates that their graduates are well regarded and sought after.

Where is the School Located? For a number of students, the college they pick will need to be within travelling distance of their Jamison PA residence. Students who have decided to attend online classes obviously will not have to trouble themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of area internships will be of concern. Something to consider is that if you decide to enroll in a school that is out of state or perhaps out of your local area, you might need to pay a higher tuition. State colleges often charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges usually charge a higher tuition for those students that live outside of their districts.

How Large are the Classes ? Unless you are the sort of student that prefers to sit way in the rear of class or hide in the crowd, you will undoubtedly prefer a smaller class size. Small classes permit more individual participation and personalized instruction. Ask the schools you are looking at what the typical student to teacher ratio is for their classes. If practical you may want to sit in on one or more classes before making your final decision. This will also give you an opportunity to converse with some of the instructors and students to get their perspectives regarding the sonogram tech program also.

Does the Program Accommodate your Schedule? And last you must verify that the sonographer  school you finally select can furnish the class schedule you need. This is particularly essential if you decide to continue working while you attend school. If you must schedule evening or weekend classes in the Jamison PA area, verify that they are available. If you can only enroll on a part-time basis, find out if that is an alternative and how many courses or credit hours you would have to carry. Also, find out what the procedure is for making up any classes that you may miss as a result of illness, work or family emergencies.
