Ultrasound Technician Work Description

Kutztown PA ultrasound tech with patientThere are multiple professional titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also called ultrasound technologists, sonogram techs, and diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers). No matter what their title is, they all have the same basic job function, which is to implement diagnostic ultrasound testing on patients. Although a number of techs work as generalists there are specialties within the field, for example in cardiology and pediatrics. The majority work in Kutztown PA clinics, hospitals, outpatient diagnostic imaging centers and even private practices. Typical daily job functions of a sonogram tech can involve:

  • Maintaining records of patient medical histories and specifics of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Preparing the ultrasound machines for testing and then cleaning and recalibrating them
  • Escorting patients to treatment rooms and making them comfortable
  • Using equipment while minimizing patient exposure to sound waves
  • Evaluating results and determining need for further testing

Sonographers must routinely gauge the safety and performance of their equipment. They also are held to a high professional standard and code of conduct as medical practitioners. In order to maintain that level of professionalism and stay up to date with medical knowledge, they are required to enroll in continuing education training on a regular basis.

Ultrasound Tech Degrees Offered

Kutztown PA ultrasound technician performing sonographyUltrasound technician students have the option to acquire either an Associate or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will generally involve about 18 months to 2 years to complete based upon the course load and program. A Bachelor’s Degree will require more time at up to 4 years to finalize. Another option for those who have already obtained a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have received a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a relevant medical sector, you can instead choose a certificate program that will require just 12 to 18 months to complete. One thing to bear in mind is that almost all ultrasound technician programs do have a clinical training component as part of their curriculum. It can often be satisfied by entering into an internship program which numerous schools organize through Kutztown PA hospitals and clinics. When you have graduated from one of the degree or certificate programs, you will then have to satisfy the licensing or certification requirements in Pennsylvania or whatever state you choose to practice in.

Sonogram Tech Online Programs

student attending online sonography class in Kutztown PAAs aforementioned, almost all ultrasound tech colleges have a clinical component to their programs. So while you can receive a degree or certificate online, a significant part of the training will be either carried out in an on-campus lab or at an approved off campus facility. Clinical training can usually be fulfilled by means of an internship at a local Kutztown PA hospital, outpatient clinic or family practice. However the rest of the training and classes may be accessed online in your Kutztown home. This is particularly convenient for those students that continue working while obtaining their degrees. In addition online programs are often less costly than on-campus alternatives. Expenditures for study materials and commuting can be decreased also. But similarly as with any ultrasound tech school you are reviewing, confirm that the online program you ultimately pick is accredited. One of the most highly respected accrediting agencies is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is particularly crucial for licensing, certification and job placement (more on accreditation later). So if you are disciplined enough to attend classes away from the classroom in the comfort of your own home, then online classes could be the ideal option for you.

What to Ask Ultrasound Tech Schools

Questions to ask Kutztown PA ultrasound technician schoolsAs soon as you have determined the type of degree or certificate that you would like to earn, you can start the process of assessing and comparing ultrasound tech colleges. You may first want to choose whether you would rather attend classes online or travel to a college campus in the Kutztown PA area. Obviously location will be critical if you decide on the latter, and the cost of tuition no doubt will be an important qualifier also. But there are other factors that you should also take into consideration, such as if the schools are accredited and if they sponsor internships. So in order to complete your due diligence so that you can make your ultimate selection, below are several questions that you may want to ask each ultrasound tech college prior to making a decision.

Are the Ultrasound Technician Colleges Accredited? The majority of sonogram technician colleges have acquired some form of accreditation, whether regional or national. Even so, it’s still crucial to confirm that the school and program are accredited. One of the most highly regarded accrediting organizations in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Programs obtaining accreditation from the JRC-DMS have undergone an extensive assessment of their teachers and course materials. If the program is online it might also obtain accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which focuses on online or distance education. All accrediting organizations should be recognized by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. In addition to ensuring a quality education, accreditation will also help in securing financial aid and student loans, which are frequently not offered for non-accredited programs. Accreditation might also be a pre-requisite for certification and licensing as required. And numerous Kutztown PA health facilities will only hire a graduate of an accredited college for entry level openings.

Are Internships Sponsored? Ask if the ultrasound technician programs you are reviewing have relationships with Kutztown PA hospitals or clinics for internship programs. Internships are not only a terrific manner to receive hands on experience in a clinical environment, they are additionally a way to fulfill the clinical training requirement for the majority of programs. As a supplemental benefit, they can help graduates and students form professional connections in the Kutztown healthcare community and help with job placement.

Is Job Placement Assistance available? You will undoubtedly wish to hit the ground running after graduating, but finding that first job in a new profession can be difficult without support. Find out if the ultrasound tech programs you are interviewing have job placement programs and what their placement rates are. High and rapid placement rates are a good sign that the schools have substantial networks and great relationships with Pennsylvania healthcare employers. It also substantiates that their graduates are well regarded and in demand.

Where is the Program Located? For many students, the school they decide on will need to be within driving distance of their Kutztown PA residence. Those who have chosen to attend classes online naturally will not have to worry themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of area internships will be of concern. One thing to keep in mind is that if you choose to enroll in a college that is out of state or perhaps out of your local area, you may be required to pay a higher tuition. State colleges commonly charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges usually charge a higher tuition for those students that don’t reside within their districts.

What Size are the Classes ? Unless you are the kind of student that prefers to sit way in the rear of the classroom or get lost in the crowd, you will probably prefer a small class size. Smaller classes allow for more individual participation and personalized instruction. Ask the colleges you are reviewing what the typical teacher to student ratio is for their classrooms. If practical you may prefer to sit in on one or more classes before making your ultimate decision. This will also give you a chance to converse with a few of the students and instructors to get their perspectives regarding the sonogram technician program as well.

Can the School Accommodate your Schedule? And finally you must confirm that the sonographer  program you finally select can furnish the class schedule you need. This is especially essential if you opt to continue working while you attend classes. If you need to schedule night or weekend classes in the Kutztown PA area, make sure that they are offered. If you can only attend part-time, find out if that is an alternative and how many credit hours or courses you would need to enroll in. Also, ask what the procedure is for making up any classes that you might miss because of illness, work or family emergencies.

    Kutztown, Pennsylvania

Kutztown is a borough in Berks County, Pennsylvania, United States, 18 miles (29 km) southwest of Allentown and 17 miles (27 km) northeast of Reading. As of the 2010 census, the borough had a population of 5,012.[3]Kutztown University is located just outside the borough limits to the southwest.

George (Coots) Kutz purchased 130 acres (53 ha) of land that became Kutztown on June 16, 1755, from Peter Wentz who owned much of what is now Maxatawny Township. Kutz first laid out his plans for the town in 1779. The first lots in the new town of Cootstown (later renamed Kutztown) were purchased in 1785 by Adam Dietrich and Henry Schweier.

The Kutztown area, broadly defined, encompasses an area of land also known as the East Penn Valley, a broad limestone valley situated in northern and eastern Berks County, bounded by the Blue Mountain and South Mountain ranges to the north and south, respectively, by the Lehigh County border to the east, and by Ontelaunee Creek (Maiden Creek) to the west. Crystal Cave was discovered near the town in 1871.
