Sonographer Job Description

Landisburg PA ultrasound tech with patientThere are several acceptable titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also referred to as sonogram techs, diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers) and ultrasound technologists. No matter what their title is, they all have the same basic job description, which is to perform diagnostic ultrasound techniques on patients. Even though many work as generalists there are specialties within the profession, for instance in cardiology and pediatrics. Most practice in Landisburg PA clinics, hospitals, private practices or outpatient diagnostic imaging centers. Typical daily job duties of an ultrasound technician can include:

  • Maintaining records of patient medical histories and details of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Readying the ultrasound machines for usage and then cleaning and re-calibrating them
  • Escorting patients to treatment rooms and making them comfortable
  • Utilizing equipment while limiting patient exposure to sound waves
  • Assessing results and determining necessity for additional testing

Ultrasound techs must regularly assess the performance and safety of their machines. They also must adhere to a high ethical standard and code of conduct as health practitioners. So as to maintain that degree of professionalism and stay current with medical knowledge, they are required to enroll in continuing education programs on a regular basis.

Sonogram Technician Degrees Offered

Landisburg PA ultrasound technician performing sonographyUltrasound technician students have the opportunity to acquire either an Associate or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will usually require around 18 months to 2 years to accomplish based upon the program and class load. A Bachelor’s Degree will take longer at up to 4 years to finish. Another option for those who have previously received a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have received a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a relevant medical sector, you can enroll in a certificate program that will require just 12 to 18 months to finish. Something to keep in mind is that most sonographer schools do have a clinical training element as part of their curriculum. It often may be satisfied by taking part in an internship program which many schools organize with Landisburg PA hospitals and clinics. When you have graduated from one of the certificate or degree programs, you will then need to satisfy the certification or licensing prerequisites in Pennsylvania or whatever state you decide to work in.

Ultrasound Technician Online Colleges

student attending online sonography class in Landisburg PAAs earlier discussed, nearly all sonogram technician colleges have a clinical component to their programs. So although you can receive a certificate or degree online, a substantial part of the training will be either conducted in an on-campus lab or at an approved off-campus medical care provider. Practical training can often be satisfied through an internship at a local Landisburg PA hospital, outpatient clinic or private practice. But the balance of the classes and training can be attended online in your Landisburg home. This is especially beneficial for those individuals that keep working while getting their degrees. Plus online schools are many times more affordable than on-campus alternatives. Expenditures for commuting and study materials may be reduced also. But similarly as with every sonographer school you are reviewing, verify that the online program you ultimately pick is accredited. Among the most highly respected accrediting agencies is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is particularly important for licensing, certification and finding employment (more on accreditation later). So if you are dedicated enough to attend classes outside of the classroom in the convenience of your own home, then an online school could be the ideal choice for you.

Points to Ask Sonography Schools

Questions to ask Landisburg PA ultrasound technician schoolsAs soon as you have decided on which certificate or degree that you would like to obtain, you can begin the process of evaluating and comparing ultrasound tech colleges. You will first probably want to choose whether you will attend classes online or travel to a school campus in the Landisburg PA area. Obviously location will be critical if you decide on the latter, and the price of tuition undoubtedly will be an important qualification as well. But there are additional things that you must also take into consideration, for instance if the schools are accredited and if they sponsor internships. Therefore in order to complete your due diligence so that you can arrive at your final selection, following are several questions that you may want to ask each sonography school before deciding.

Are the Ultrasound Technician Schools Accredited? The majority of sonogram technician schools have earned some form of accreditation, whether regional or national. However, it’s still imperative to verify that the program and school are accredited. One of the most highly respected accrediting agencies in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Programs receiving accreditation from the JRC-DMS have undergone an extensive review of their teachers and course materials. If the school is online it may also receive accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which focuses on online or distance education. All accrediting agencies should be recognized by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Along with ensuring a quality education, accreditation will also help in acquiring financial aid and student loans, which are often not accessible for non-accredited colleges. Accreditation can also be a pre-requisite for certification and licensing as required. And a number of Landisburg PA employers will only hire graduates of an accredited school for entry level openings.

Are Internships Provided? Ask if the ultrasound tech schools you are evaluating have partnerships with Landisburg PA hospitals or clinics for internship programs. Not only are internships an excellent way to receive hands on experience in a clinical environment, they are also a means to satisfy the clinical training requirement for most programs. As a secondary benefit, they may help students and graduates form professional connections in the Landisburg medical community and help with obtaining employment.

Is Job Placement Help offered? You will most likely want to hit the ground running after graduation, but finding that first job in a new profession can be challenging without support. Find out if the ultrasound tech schools you are reviewing have job assistance programs and what their success rates are. High and rapid placement rates are a good sign that the schools have sizable networks and great relationships with Pennsylvania healthcare employers. It also confirms that their graduates are highly regarded and sought after.

Where is the School Located? For a number of students, the school they select will need to be within travelling distance of their Landisburg PA residence. Students who have decided to attend online classes naturally will not have to concern themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of area internships will be of concern. One thing to keep in mind is that if you choose to enroll in a school that is out of state or perhaps out of your local area, you might need to pay a higher tuition. State colleges commonly charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges frequently charge a higher tuition for those students that don’t reside within their districts.

How Big are the Classes ? Unless you are the type of student that likes to sit far in the rear of class or get lost in the crowd, you will probably want a small class size. Smaller classes allow for more individual participation and one-on-one instruction. Ask the schools you are researching what the typical student to teacher ratio is for their classrooms. If practical you may want to monitor one or more classes before making your ultimate decision. This will also give you a chance to converse with a few of the instructors and students to get their opinions regarding the ultrasound technician program also.

Does the School Accommodate your Schedule? And last you need to confirm that the sonographer  school you finally pick can furnish the class schedule you need. This is particularly important if you decide to continue working while you attend classes. If you need to schedule evening or weekend classes in the Landisburg PA area, make sure that they are available. If you can only attend part-time, verify if that is an option and how many courses or credit hours you would need to enroll in. Also, find out what the protocol is for making up any classes that you might miss because of work, illness or family obligations.
