Sonogram Tech Occupation Summary

Lansdowne PA ultrasound tech with patientThere are more than one acceptable titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also referred to as ultrasound technologists, sonogram techs, and diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers). Regardless of name, they all have the same basic job function, which is to implement diagnostic ultrasound techniques on patients. Although a number of techs work as generalists there are specializations within the field, for instance in cardiology and pediatrics. The majority work in Lansdowne PA hospitals, clinics, private practices or outpatient diagnostic imaging centers. Standard daily job tasks of an ultrasound technician may consist of:

  • Keeping records of patient medical histories and details of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Prepping the ultrasound machines for use and then sterilizing and recalibrating them
  • Transferring patients to treatment rooms and making them comfortable
  • Using equipment while minimizing patient exposure to sound waves
  • Assessing results and determining necessity for supplemental testing

Sonographers must routinely evaluate the safety and performance of their machines. They also must adhere to a high professional standard and code of conduct as health practitioners. In order to maintain that degree of professionalism and stay current with medical knowledge, they are required to complete continuing education programs on an ongoing basis.

Sonogram Technician Degree Programs Available

Lansdowne PA ultrasound technician performing sonographyUltrasound technician students have the option to earn either an Associate or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will typically take around 18 months to 2 years to complete dependent on the course load and program. A Bachelor’s Degree will take longer at up to 4 years to finalize. Another option for those who have previously obtained a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have received a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a relevant medical field, you can enroll in a certificate program that will require only 12 to 18 months to finish. One thing to bear in mind is that the majority of ultrasound technician programs do have a practical training element as a portion of their course of study. It can often be satisfied by participating in an internship program which many schools sponsor through Lansdowne PA hospitals and clinics. Once you have graduated from one of the certificate or degree programs, you will then need to fulfill the certification or licensing requirements in Pennsylvania or whichever state you decide to work in.

Sonogram Tech Online Colleges

student attending online sonography class in Lansdowne PAAs earlier discussed, almost all sonogram technician schools have a practical requirement to their programs. So while you can earn a degree or certificate online, a substantial portion of the training will be either carried out in an on-campus lab or at an authorized off campus medical care provider. Practical training can typically be fulfilled through an internship at a local Lansdowne PA outpatient clinic, hospital or private practice. But the balance of the training and classes can be accessed online in your Lansdowne home. This is particularly beneficial for those individuals that keep working while obtaining their degrees. Plus online programs are many times more affordable than on-campus alternatives. Costs for commuting and study materials can be lessened also. But similarly as with every sonography program you are looking at, make sure that the online program you ultimately pick is accredited. One of the most highly respected accrediting organizations is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is particularly important for certification, licensing and job placement (more on accreditation later). So if you are dedicated enough to attend classes away from the classroom in the comfort of your own home, then an online degree may be the right option for you.

Questions to Ask Sonogram Tech Programs

Questions to ask Lansdowne PA ultrasound technician schoolsAs soon as you have determined the type of certificate or degree that you would like to earn, you can start the process of evaluating and comparing sonogram tech colleges. You may first want to choose whether you would rather attend classes online or commute to a school campus in the Lansdowne PA area. Obviously location will be significant if you decide on the latter, and the cost of tuition undoubtedly will be an important qualification as well. But there are other factors that you must also take into consideration, for example if the programs are accredited and if they offer internship programs. Therefore in order to perform your due diligence so that you can arrive at your ultimate selection, following are a few questions that you may want to ask each sonographer school before deciding.

Are the Sonogram Technician Colleges Accredited? A large number of ultrasound technician colleges have earned some form of accreditation, whether regional or national. Nevertheless, it’s still crucial to confirm that the school and program are accredited. One of the most highly respected accrediting agencies in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Schools earning accreditation from the JRC-DMS have gone through a rigorous evaluation of their instructors and course materials. If the college is online it may also obtain accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which targets distance or online learning. All accrediting agencies should be acknowledged by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Besides guaranteeing a superior education, accreditation will also help in acquiring financial assistance and student loans, which are frequently not offered for non-accredited colleges. Accreditation might also be a pre-requisite for licensing and certification as required. And numerous Lansdowne PA employers will only hire graduates of an accredited school for entry level jobs.

Are Internship Programs Sponsored? Inquire if the sonogram tech programs you are interested in have partnerships with Lansdowne PA clinics or hospitals for internship programs. Internships are not only an excellent way to receive hands on training in a clinical environment, they are additionally a means to satisfy the practical training requirement for the majority of programs. As a supplemental benefit, they may assist students and graduates develop professional relationships in the Lansdowne health care community and assist with job placement.

Is Job Placement Assistance provided? You will most likely want to hit the ground running after graduation, but getting that first job in a new field can be challenging without assistance. Ask if the sonographer schools you are assessing have job assistance programs and what their success rates are. High and rapid placement rates are a good indication that the schools have sizable networks and great relationships with Pennsylvania healthcare employers. It also confirms that their graduates are well regarded and sought after.

Where is the Program Located? For a lot of students, the school they choose will have to be within travelling distance of their Lansdowne PA residence. Individuals who have decided to attend online classes obviously will not have to concern themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of local internships will be of concern. One thing to keep in mind is that if you choose to enroll in a college that is out of state or perhaps out of your local area, you may need to pay a higher tuition. State colleges often charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges often charge a higher tuition to those students that don’t reside within their districts.

How Large are the Classes ? Unless you are the type of person that prefers to sit way in the rear of class or get lost in the crowd, you will probably want a small class size. Smaller classes allow for more individual participation and personalized instruction. Ask the colleges you are researching what the average teacher to student ratio is for their classes. If practical you may prefer to monitor one or more classes before making your ultimate decision. This will also give you a chance to converse with some of the students and instructors to get their opinions regarding the sonogram tech program also.

Does the Program Accommodate your Schedule? And finally you need to confirm that the sonographer  program you ultimately select can furnish the class schedule you need. This is particularly crucial if you opt to continue working while attending school. If you must schedule night or weekend classes in the Lansdowne PA area, make sure that they are available. If you can only enroll on a part-time basis, check if that is an alternative and how many courses or credit hours you would have to enroll in. Also, ask what the procedure is for making up any classes that you might miss because of illness, work or family emergencies.
