Sonogram Tech Work Description

Laporte PA ultrasound tech with patientThere are several acceptable titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also called sonogram techs, diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers) and ultrasound technologists. No matter what their title is, they all have the same primary job description, which is to carry out diagnostic ultrasound testing on patients. Even though many work as generalists there are specialties within the field, for example in pediatrics and cardiology. The majority work in Laporte PA clinics, hospitals, private practices or outpatient diagnostic imaging centers. Typical daily job functions of a sonogram technician can consist of:

  • Keeping records of patient medical histories and specifics of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Readying the ultrasound machines for testing and then sterilizing and re-calibrating them
  • Escorting patients to treatment rooms and ensuring their comfort
  • Operating equipment while minimizing patient exposure to sound waves
  • Evaluating results and determining necessity for further testing

Sonographers must routinely evaluate the performance and safety of their equipment. They also are held to a high ethical standard and code of conduct as medical practitioners. In order to sustain that degree of professionalism and remain up to date with medical knowledge, they are required to complete continuing education training on an ongoing basis.

Sonogram Technician Degree Programs Available

Laporte PA ultrasound technician performing sonographyUltrasound tech enrollees have the option to earn either an Associate Degree or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will generally take around 18 months to 2 years to complete depending on the program and class load. A Bachelor’s Degree will take longer at up to 4 years to complete. Another alternative for those who have previously earned a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have obtained a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a relevant health field, you can instead choose a certificate program that will require only 12 to 18 months to finish. One thing to bear in mind is that almost all sonographer schools do have a clinical training component as a portion of their curriculum. It often may be fulfilled by participating in an internship program which many colleges sponsor with Laporte PA hospitals and clinics. Once you have graduated from one of the certificate or degree programs, you will then have to satisfy the licensing or certification prerequisites in Pennsylvania or whichever state you decide to work in.

Online Ultrasound Tech Schools

So while you can receive a certificate or degree online, a significant part of the training will be either conducted in an on campus lab or at an approved off campus facility. Clinical training can usually be fulfilled through an internship at a local Laporte PA outpatient clinic, hospital or family practice. But the rest of the classes and training may be attended online in your Laporte home. This is particularly beneficial for those individuals that keep working while obtaining their degrees. In addition online programs are many times less costly than traditional alternatives. Costs for commuting and study materials can be lessened also. But similarly as with any sonography school you are looking at, verify that the online program you choose is accredited. One of the most highly regarded accrediting agencies is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is especially important for licensing, certification and job placement (more on accreditation later). So if you are disciplined enough to attend classes away from the classroom in the comfort of your own home, then an online degree could be the ideal choice for you.

Questions to Ask Ultrasound Technician Schools

Questions to ask Laporte PA ultrasound technician schoolsWhen you have determined the type of degree or certificate that you would like to obtain, you can begin the process of evaluating and comparing ultrasound tech colleges. You may first want to decide whether you will attend classes online or travel to a school campus in the Laporte PA area. Of course location will be significant if you choose the latter, and the cost of tuition no doubt will be an important qualifier also. But there are additional factors that you must also take into account, for instance if the programs are accredited and if they sponsor internship programs. So in order to perform your due diligence so that you can make your ultimate selection, following are a few questions that you may want to ask each sonographer college before deciding.

Are the Sonogram Tech Schools Accredited? Most ultrasound technician colleges have received some form of accreditation, whether regional or national. Nevertheless, it’s still important to confirm that the program and school are accredited. Among the most highly respected accrediting agencies in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Schools obtaining accreditation from the JRC-DMS have gone through an extensive assessment of their teachers and course materials. If the program is online it may also earn accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which targets distance or online learning. All accrediting organizations should be recognized by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. In addition to guaranteeing a quality education, accreditation will also assist in acquiring financial aid and student loans, which are often not accessible for non-accredited programs. Accreditation may also be a pre-requisite for licensing and certification as required. And many Laporte PA employers will only hire a graduate of an accredited college for entry level openings.

Are Internship Programs Offered? Find out if the ultrasound technician schools you are evaluating have relationships with Laporte PA hospitals or clinics for internship programs. Internships are not only a terrific manner to get hands on experience in a clinical environment, they are also a way to satisfy the practical training requirement for most programs. As a supplemental benefit, they may assist students and graduates form professional connections in the Laporte health care community and assist with job placement.

Is Job Placement Assistance provided? You will probably wish to secure employment quickly after graduating, but getting that first job in a new profession can be challenging without assistance. Find out if the ultrasound tech schools you are assessing have job assistance programs and what their success rates are. High and rapid placement rates are a good indication that the schools have substantial networks and good relationships with Pennsylvania healthcare employers. It also corroborates that their students are highly regarded and sought after.

Where is the Program Located? For a number of students, the school they choose will need to be within commuting distance of their Laporte PA residence. Those who have chosen to attend classes online obviously will not have to trouble themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of local internships will be of importance. One thing to bear in mind is that if you choose to enroll in a college that is out of state or even out of your local area, you might need to pay a higher tuition. State colleges usually charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges often charge a higher tuition to those students that live outside of their districts.

How Large are the Classes ? Unless you are the type of person that prefers to sit way in the back of class or get lost in the crowd, you will likely prefer a small class size. Smaller classes permit more individual participation and one-on-one instruction. Ask the colleges you are reviewing what the typical student to teacher ratio is for their classrooms. If practical you may want to monitor one or more classes before making your ultimate decision. This will also give you an opportunity to speak with some of the students and instructors to get their perspectives regarding the ultrasound tech program as well.

Does the Program Accommodate your Schedule? And finally you need to verify that the sonographer  program you ultimately choose can offer the class schedule you need. This is particularly important if you decide to continue working while attending school. If you need to schedule night or weekend classes in the Laporte PA area, make sure that they are available. If you can only enroll on a part-time basis, find out if that is an option and how many credit hours or courses you would need to carry. Also, ask what the protocol is for making up any classes that you might miss due to work, illness or family emergencies.
