Sonogram Tech Occupation Description

Lawrenceville PA ultrasound tech with patientThere are several acceptable titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also referred to as sonogram techs, diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers) and ultrasound technologists. No matter what their title is, they all have the same primary job description, which is to implement diagnostic ultrasound techniques on patients. While many work as generalists there are specialties within the profession, for instance in cardiology and pediatrics. The majority work in Lawrenceville PA clinics, hospitals, private practices or outpatient diagnostic imaging centers. Typical daily job functions of an ultrasound tech can include:

  • Keeping records of patient medical histories and specifics of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Preparing the ultrasound machines for usage and then cleaning and re-calibrating them
  • Transferring patients to treatment rooms and making them comfortable
  • Utilizing equipment while minimizing patient exposure to sound waves
  • Reviewing the results and identifying need for additional testing

Sonographers must frequently evaluate the safety and performance of their machines. They also must adhere to a high ethical standard and code of conduct as medical practitioners. So as to sustain that level of professionalism and stay up to date with medical knowledge, they are mandated to enroll in continuing education courses on an ongoing basis.

Ultrasound Technician Degree Programs Available

Lawrenceville PA ultrasound technician performing sonographyUltrasound technician students have the option to earn either an Associate or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will typically take around 18 months to 2 years to finish depending on the course load and program. A Bachelor’s Degree will take longer at as long as 4 years to complete. Another option for individuals who have previously obtained a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have earned a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a relevant medical sector, you can enroll in a certificate program that will take only 12 to 18 months to complete. Something to consider is that the majority of sonographer programs do have a clinical training element as part of their curriculum. It can often be satisfied by entering into an internship program which numerous colleges organize through Lawrenceville PA clinics and hospitals. When you have graduated from any of the degree or certificate programs, you will then have to satisfy the licensing or certification prerequisites in Pennsylvania or whichever state you choose to work in.

Sonographer Online Colleges

student attending online sonography class in Lawrenceville PAAs earlier discussed, almost all sonogram tech colleges have a clinical requirement to their programs. So although you can receive a certificate or degree online, a significant part of the training will be either carried out in an on-campus lab or at a sponsored off campus facility. Practical training can usually be satisfied by means of an internship at a local Lawrenceville PA outpatient clinic, hospital or private practice. But the remainder of the training and classes can be accessed online in your Lawrenceville home. This is particularly convenient for those students that keep working while getting their degrees. In addition online schools are often less expensive than traditional alternatives. Expenses for commuting and study materials can be reduced also. But similarly as with every sonographer college you are reviewing, check that the online school you choose is accredited. Among the most highly regarded accrediting agencies is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is particularly important for licensing, certification and finding employment (more on accreditation later). So if you are disciplined enough to learn outside of the classroom in the comfort of your own home, then online classes may be the right choice for you.

Questions to Ask Ultrasound Tech Colleges

Questions to ask Lawrenceville PA ultrasound technician schoolsOnce you have determined which certificate or degree that you would like to obtain, you can begin the process of assessing and comparing sonogram tech schools. You may first want to decide whether you would rather access classes online or commute to a school campus in the Lawrenceville PA area. Of course location will be important if you choose the latter, and the price of tuition no doubt will be an important qualifier as well. But there are additional variables that you must also take into consideration, such as if the colleges are accredited and if they provide internships. So in order to perform your due diligence so that you can arrive at your ultimate selection, following are some questions that you need ask each ultrasound tech school before deciding.

Are the Ultrasound Technician Programs Accredited? The majority of ultrasound technician colleges have earned some type of accreditation, whether national or regional. Even so, it’s still important to confirm that the program and school are accredited. Among the most highly regarded accrediting organizations in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Programs obtaining accreditation from the JRC-DMS have gone through a detailed assessment of their teachers and educational materials. If the college is online it may also earn accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which focuses on online or distance learning. All accrediting organizations should be recognized by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. In addition to guaranteeing a premium education, accreditation will also assist in acquiring financial assistance and student loans, which are frequently not accessible for non-accredited colleges. Accreditation may also be a pre-requisite for licensing and certification as required. And a number of Lawrenceville PA employers will only hire a graduate of an accredited program for entry-level jobs.

Are Internships Offered? Ask if the ultrasound tech schools you are evaluating have partnerships with Lawrenceville PA clinics or hospitals for internship programs. Not only are internships a terrific way to obtain practical experience in a clinical setting, they are additionally a means to satisfy the clinical training requirement for the majority of programs. As a secondary benefit, they can help students and graduates develop professional connections in the Lawrenceville medical community and assist with obtaining employment.

Is Job Placement Help offered? You will probably want to hit the ground running after graduation, but finding that first job in a new profession can be challenging without assistance. Find out if the ultrasound tech programs you are considering have job placement programs and what their placement rates are. Rapid and high placement rates are an excellent indication that the schools have sizable networks and great relationships with Pennsylvania healthcare employers. It also corroborates that their students are well regarded and in demand.

Where is the School Located? For a number of students, the school they choose will need to be within commuting distance of their Lawrenceville PA residence. Individuals who have chosen to attend online classes naturally will not have to worry themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of area internships will be of concern. One thing to consider is that if you decide to enroll in a program that is out of state or perhaps out of your local area, you may need to pay a higher tuition. State colleges typically charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges generally charge a higher tuition for those students that don’t reside within their districts.

What are the Class Sizes ? Unless you are the type of student that likes to sit far in the rear of class or get lost in the crowd, you will probably want a smaller class size. Small classes permit more individual participation and one-on-one instruction. Ask the colleges you are researching what the average student to teacher ratio is for their classrooms. If practical you may want to monitor one or more classes before making your final decision. This will also give you an opportunity to speak with some of the instructors and students to get their opinions regarding the ultrasound tech program as well.

Can the School Accommodate your Schedule? And last you need to confirm that the sonographer  program you finally select can offer the class schedule you need. This is especially important if you opt to continue working while attending school. If you must schedule night or weekend classes in the Lawrenceville PA area, check that they are offered. If you can only attend part-time, verify if that is an option and how many courses or credit hours you would need to carry. Also, ask what the procedure is for making up any classes that you might miss because of work, illness or family obligations.
