Sonogram Tech Job Summary

Leetsdale PA ultrasound tech with patientThere are several professional titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also referred to as ultrasound technologists, sonogram techs, and diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers). Regardless of name, they all have the same basic job function, which is to implement diagnostic ultrasound procedures on patients. Although many practice as generalists there are specializations within the profession, for example in cardiology and pediatrics. The majority work in Leetsdale PA hospitals, clinics, outpatient diagnostic imaging centers and even private practices. Typical daily job duties of an ultrasound technician may involve:

  • Keeping records of patient case histories and details of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Preparing the ultrasound machines for usage and then sterilizing and re-calibrating them
  • Escorting patients to treatment rooms and ensuring their comfort
  • Utilizing equipment while minimizing patient exposure to sound waves
  • Assessing results and determining need for supplemental testing

Sonographers must regularly gauge the safety and performance of their machines. They also must adhere to a high professional standard and code of conduct as health practitioners. In order to sustain that degree of professionalism and remain up to date with medical knowledge, they are mandated to complete continuing education programs on a regular basis.

Ultrasound Tech Degrees Available

Leetsdale PA ultrasound technician performing sonographyUltrasound technician students have the opportunity to acquire either an Associate or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will generally take about 18 months to 2 years to finish dependent on the program and class load. A Bachelor’s Degree will take longer at as long as four years to finalize. Another alternative for those who have already received a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have earned a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a related health sector, you can instead choose a certificate program that will take just 12 to 18 months to finish. One thing to bear in mind is that the majority of ultrasound technician colleges do have a clinical training element as part of their course of study. It often may be satisfied by entering into an internship program which many schools sponsor through Leetsdale PA hospitals and clinics. After you have graduated from any of the certificate or degree programs, you will then have to fulfill the certification or licensing prerequisites in Pennsylvania or whichever state you choose to work in.

Ultrasound Technician Online Programs

student attending online sonography class in Leetsdale PAAs aforementioned, nearly all sonogram technician colleges have a clinical requirement to their programs. So while you can earn a degree or certificate online, a substantial portion of the training will be either conducted in an on campus lab or at an authorized off campus medical care provider. Clinical training can usually be fulfilled by means of an internship at a local Leetsdale PA hospital, outpatient clinic or family practice. However the rest of the training and classes can be accessed online in your Leetsdale home. This is particularly convenient for those individuals that keep working while obtaining their degrees. In addition online schools are frequently less costly than traditional options. Costs for commuting and study materials may be reduced also. But just as with any ultrasound tech program you are reviewing, make sure that the online program you enroll in is accredited. Among the most highly respected accrediting organizations is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is particularly significant for licensing, certification and finding employment (more on accreditation later). So if you are dedicated enough to learn away from the classroom in the convenience of your own home, then online classes could be the right choice for you.

Topics to Ask Ultrasound Technician Colleges

Questions to ask Leetsdale PA ultrasound technician schoolsAs soon as you have decided on the type of certificate or degree that you would like to obtain, you can start the process of assessing and comparing sonogram tech schools. You may first want to decide whether you will access classes online or commute to a school campus in the Leetsdale PA area. Obviously location will be important if you select the latter, and the cost of tuition undoubtedly will be an initial qualifier also. But there are additional variables that you should also take into consideration, such as if the programs are accredited and if they provide internships. Therefore in order to carry out your due diligence so that you can make your ultimate selection, following are several questions that you may want to ask each sonography college before deciding.

Are the Ultrasound Technician Schools Accredited? Most ultrasound technician schools have obtained some type of accreditation, whether national or regional. However, it’s still important to verify that the program and school are accredited. One of the most highly regarded accrediting agencies in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Programs obtaining accreditation from the JRC-DMS have undergone an extensive examination of their instructors and educational materials. If the program is online it may also earn accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which focuses on distance or online learning. All accrediting agencies should be recognized by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Besides guaranteeing a superior education, accreditation will also help in securing financial aid and student loans, which are often not offered for non-accredited schools. Accreditation may also be a pre-requisite for licensing and certification as required. And many Leetsdale PA employers will only hire graduates of an accredited school for entry level jobs.

Are Internships Sponsored? Ask if the sonogram technician schools you are evaluating have associations with Leetsdale PA clinics or hospitals for internship programs. Not only are internships a terrific manner to get practical experience in a clinical environment, they are also a way to fulfill the practical training requirement for most programs. As a secondary benefit, they may assist students and graduates develop professional relationships in the Leetsdale medical community and assist with job placement.

Is Job Placement Assistance available? You will undoubtedly wish to hit the ground running after graduation, but finding that first job in a new profession can be difficult without assistance. Find out if the sonographer programs you are reviewing have job placement programs and what their placement rates are. Rapid and high placement rates are an excellent indication that the schools have sizable networks and good relationships with Pennsylvania healthcare employers. It also confirms that their students are well regarded and sought after.

Where is the Program Located? For many students, the college they choose will need to be within driving distance of their Leetsdale PA home. Those who have decided to attend classes online obviously will not have to worry themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of local internships will be of importance. Something to bear in mind is that if you choose to enroll in a school that is out of state or even out of your local area, you might need to pay a higher tuition. State colleges generally charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges commonly charge a higher tuition for those students that live outside of their districts.

How Large are the Classes ? Unless you are the sort of student that likes to sit way in the back of the classroom or hide in the crowd, you will probably want a small class size. Small classes allow for more individual participation and one-on-one instruction. Ask the colleges you are researching what the average teacher to student ratio is for their classes. If practical you may prefer to sit in on one or more classes before making your ultimate decision. This will also give you a chance to converse with a few of the instructors and students to get their perspectives regarding the sonogram technician program also.

Does the College Accommodate your Schedule? And last you must confirm that the ultrasound tech  program you finally choose can offer the class schedule you need. This is especially essential if you opt to continue working while attending classes. If you must schedule evening or weekend classes in the Leetsdale PA area, check that they are offered. If you can only attend part-time, verify if that is an alternative and how many credit hours or courses you would have to enroll in. Also, ask what the procedure is for making up any classes that you might miss because of illness, work or family emergencies.

Leetsdale was incorporated on March 28, 1904. Leetsdale at one time had a formidable industrial manufacturing base, with a Bethlehem Steel mill that closed in the late 1970s. The site of the mill on the shore of the Ohio River is now the Leetsdale Industrial Park, or the Port of Leetsdale, and is home to facilities leased to a number of companies of varying sizes.[4]

According to the United States Census Bureau, the borough has a total area of 1.1 square miles (2.8 km2), of which 1.0 square mile (2.6 km2) is land and 0.2 square miles (0.52 km2), or 13.91%, is water.

Leetsdale is bordered by Ambridge in Beaver County to the north, Leet Township to the northeast, and Edgeworth to the southeast. The borough includes the former town of Shields. The Ohio River forms the southwest border of the borough; across the river is Crescent Township.
