Sonogram Tech Work Summary

Lenhartsville PA ultrasound tech with patientThere are multiple professional titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also called ultrasound technologists, sonogram techs, and diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers). No matter what their title is, they all have the same primary job function, which is to perform diagnostic ultrasound procedures on patients. Although a number of techs work as generalists there are specializations within the field, for example in cardiology and pediatrics. Most practice in Lenhartsville PA hospitals, clinics, private practices or outpatient diagnostic imaging centers. Standard daily job functions of an ultrasound technician can consist of:

  • Keeping records of patient case histories and details of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Prepping the ultrasound machines for use and then cleaning and re-calibrating them
  • Escorting patients to treatment rooms and making them comfortable
  • Using equipment while minimizing patient exposure to sound waves
  • Reviewing the results and determining necessity for additional testing

Sonographers must routinely evaluate the performance and safety of their machines. They also must adhere to a high ethical standard and code of conduct as health practitioners. So as to sustain that level of professionalism and remain current with medical knowledge, they are required to enroll in continuing education courses on a regular basis.

Ultrasound Tech Degree Programs Available

Lenhartsville PA ultrasound technician performing sonographyUltrasound tech students have the option to acquire either an Associate or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will typically take around 18 months to 2 years to complete based upon the program and class load. A Bachelor’s Degree will take longer at as long as 4 years to finish. Another option for individuals who have previously received a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have received a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a relevant health sector, you can enroll in a certificate program that will require just 12 to 18 months to finish. One thing to bear in mind is that almost all sonographer colleges do have a clinical training component as a portion of their course of study. It can often be satisfied by entering into an internship program which many colleges set up through Lenhartsville PA clinics and hospitals. Once you have graduated from any of the degree or certificate programs, you will then have to comply with the licensing or certification prerequisites in Pennsylvania or whichever state you elect to practice in.

student attending online sonography class in Lenhartsville PAAs aforementioned, virtually all sonogram technician colleges have a clinical requirement to their programs. So while you can obtain a degree or certificate online, a substantial portion of the training will be either held in an on-campus laboratory or at an authorized off-campus medical care provider. Clinical training can often be fulfilled through an internship at a local Lenhartsville PA hospital, outpatient clinic or private practice. But the remainder of the classes and training may be accessed online in your Lenhartsville home. This is especially beneficial for those individuals that keep working while getting their degrees. In addition online colleges are frequently less expensive than traditional options. Expenditures for study materials and commuting may be reduced as well. But similarly as with any sonography school you are reviewing, make sure that the online school you enroll in is accredited. One of the most highly regarded accrediting organizations is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is particularly significant for certification, licensing and job placement (more on accreditation later). So if you are motivated enough to attend classes away from the classroom in the convenience of your own home, then an online degree could be the right option for you.

Points to Ask Sonography Schools

Questions to ask Lenhartsville PA ultrasound technician schoolsAfter you have decided on the type of certificate or degree that you would like to obtain, you can begin the process of assessing and comparing ultrasound technician colleges. You will first probably want to choose whether you would rather access classes online or travel to a school campus in the Lenhartsville PA area. Of course location will be critical if you select the latter, and the cost of tuition undoubtedly will be an initial qualifier also. But there are other factors that you must also take into consideration, for instance if the programs are accredited and if they offer internships. So in order to carry out your due diligence so that you can arrive at your ultimate selection, following are a few questions that you need ask each sonography college prior to making a decision.

Are the Sonogram Tech Schools Accredited? A large number of ultrasound technician colleges have acquired some form of accreditation, whether regional or national. Nevertheless, it’s still important to verify that the school and program are accredited. One of the most highly regarded accrediting organizations in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Programs receiving accreditation from the JRC-DMS have gone through an extensive examination of their instructors and course materials. If the program is online it may also obtain accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which targets online or distance learning. All accrediting agencies should be recognized by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Along with guaranteeing a superior education, accreditation will also assist in acquiring financial aid and student loans, which are many times not accessible for non-accredited schools. Accreditation can also be a pre-requisite for licensing and certification as required. And many Lenhartsville PA employers will only hire a graduate of an accredited college for entry-level positions.

Are Internships Provided? Find out if the ultrasound tech programs you are interested in have associations with Lenhartsville PA hospitals or clinics for internship programs. Not only are internships an excellent manner to obtain practical training in a clinical setting, they are also a way to fulfill the practical training requirement for the majority of programs. As an ancillary benefit, they may assist students and graduates develop professional connections in the Lenhartsville medical community and help with job placement.

Is Job Placement Help offered? You will probably wish to secure employment quickly after graduation, but getting that first job in a new field can be difficult without assistance. Ask if the sonographer schools you are interviewing have job placement programs and what their placement rates are. Rapid and high placement rates are an excellent indication that the schools have sizable networks and good relationships with Pennsylvania healthcare employers. It also substantiates that their graduates are highly regarded and in demand.

Where is the College Located? For many students, the college they pick will have to be within driving distance of their Lenhartsville PA residence. Those who have decided to attend classes online obviously will not have to worry themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of area internships will be of importance. One thing to consider is that if you choose to enroll in a program that is out of state or perhaps out of your local area, you might need to pay a higher tuition. State colleges often charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges often charge a higher tuition for those students that live outside of their districts.

What Size are the Classes ? Unless you are the kind of person that prefers to sit far in the back of class or get lost in the crowd, you will likely want a small class size. Smaller classes permit more individual participation and personalized instruction. Ask the colleges you are considering what the typical teacher to student ratio is for their classrooms. If practical you may prefer to sit in on one or more classes before making your final decision. This will also give you an opportunity to talk with some of the students and instructors to get their opinions regarding the ultrasound tech program also.

Does the College Accommodate your Schedule? And finally you need to confirm that the ultrasound tech  program you ultimately pick can furnish the class schedule you need. This is particularly essential if you opt to continue working while attending school. If you must schedule evening or weekend classes in the Lenhartsville PA area, check that they are offered. If you can only enroll on a part-time basis, check if that is an alternative and how many credit hours or courses you would need to enroll in. Also, learn what the protocol is for making up any classes that you might miss as a result of work, illness or family emergencies.
