Ultrasound Technician Job Description

Lyndora PA ultrasound tech with patientThere are several professional titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also referred to as ultrasound technologists, sonogram techs, and diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers). No matter what their title is, they all have the same primary job description, which is to perform diagnostic ultrasound procedures on patients. Even though many practice as generalists there are specializations within the field, for example in cardiology and pediatrics. Most practice in Lyndora PA hospitals, clinics, private practices or outpatient diagnostic imaging centers. Typical daily job duties of a sonogram tech can consist of:

  • Keeping records of patient case histories and specifics of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Prepping the ultrasound machines for testing and then sterilizing and re-calibrating them
  • Moving patients to treatment rooms and ensuring their comfort
  • Operating equipment while limiting patient exposure to sound waves
  • Assessing results and identifying need for additional testing

Sonographers must regularly assess the safety and performance of their machines. They also are held to a high professional standard and code of conduct as medical practitioners. So as to maintain that degree of professionalism and remain current with medical knowledge, they are required to complete continuing education programs on a regular basis.

Ultrasound Tech Degree Programs Offered

Lyndora PA ultrasound technician performing sonographyUltrasound tech enrollees have the option to acquire either an Associate or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will usually involve around 18 months to 2 years to complete depending on the course load and program. A Bachelor’s Degree will take longer at up to 4 years to finish. Another alternative for those who have previously received a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have obtained a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a related health sector, you can enroll in a certificate program that will require just 12 to 18 months to complete. Something to keep in mind is that almost all sonographer colleges do have a clinical training component as a portion of their course of study. It can often be satisfied by taking part in an internship program which numerous colleges organize with Lyndora PA hospitals and clinics. After you have graduated from one of the degree or certificate programs, you will then need to satisfy the licensing or certification requirements in Pennsylvania or whichever state you decide to practice in.

Sonogram Tech Online Classes

student attending online sonography class in Lyndora PAAs earlier discussed, almost all ultrasound technician schools have a practical component to their programs. So while you can obtain a degree or certificate online, a substantial portion of the training will be either held in an on campus laboratory or at a sponsored off campus facility. Practical training can often be fulfilled by means of an internship at a local Lyndora PA outpatient clinic, hospital or family practice. However the rest of the classes and training may be accessed online in your Lyndora home. This is particularly convenient for those students that keep working while getting their degrees. In addition online schools are often less expensive than on-campus options. Expenses for study materials and commuting may be lessened as well. But just as with any ultrasound tech program you are reviewing, check that the online school you select is accredited. Among the most highly regarded accrediting agencies is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is particularly crucial for licensing, certification and job placement (more on accreditation later). So if you are motivated enough to attend classes outside of the classroom in the comfort of your own home, then online classes may be the right choice for you.

What to Ask Ultrasound Technician Colleges

Questions to ask Lyndora PA ultrasound technician schoolsOnce you have decided on which certificate or degree that you would like to earn, you can initiate the procedure of evaluating and comparing ultrasound technician schools. You will first probably want to choose whether you will attend classes online or travel to a college campus in the Lyndora PA area. Certainly location will be significant if you choose the latter, and the price of tuition no doubt will be an initial qualification also. But there are other factors that you should also take into account, for instance if the colleges are accredited and if they sponsor internship programs. So in order to carry out your due diligence so that you can make your final selection, below are a few questions that you may want to ask each ultrasound tech school prior to making a decision.

Are the Ultrasound Tech Schools Accredited? A large number of sonogram technician schools have obtained some form of accreditation, whether regional or national. However, it’s still crucial to confirm that the program and school are accredited. One of the most highly regarded accrediting organizations in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Programs obtaining accreditation from the JRC-DMS have gone through a rigorous evaluation of their instructors and course materials. If the school is online it can also obtain accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which focuses on online or distance learning. All accrediting agencies should be acknowledged by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Besides guaranteeing a quality education, accreditation will also help in acquiring financial aid and student loans, which are often not available for non-accredited schools. Accreditation can also be a pre-requisite for licensing and certification as required. And many Lyndora PA employers will only hire a graduate of an accredited school for entry level positions.

Are Internship Programs Offered? Find out if the ultrasound tech schools you are assessing have relationships with Lyndora PA clinics or hospitals for internship programs. Not only are internships an excellent manner to receive hands on training in a clinical setting, they are also a means to satisfy the practical training requirement for the majority of programs. As a supplemental benefit, they can assist graduates and students establish professional connections in the Lyndora healthcare community and assist with obtaining employment.

Is Job Placement Help provided? You will most likely wish to hit the ground running after graduation, but getting that initial job in a new field can be difficult without help. Find out if the sonographer programs you are interviewing have job placement programs and what their success rates are. Rapid and high placement rates are a good sign that the schools have sizable networks and good relationships with Pennsylvania healthcare employers. It also confirms that their graduates are highly regarded and sought after.

Where is the Program Located? For a lot of students, the college they pick will have to be within travelling distance of their Lyndora PA residence. Individuals who have opted to attend online classes obviously will not have to trouble themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of area internships will be of concern. Something to bear in mind is that if you choose to enroll in a program that is out of state or even out of your local area, you may be required to pay a higher tuition. State colleges usually charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges generally charge a higher tuition for those students that live outside of their districts.

How Big are the Classes ? Unless you are the kind of person that prefers to sit way in the back of class or get lost in the crowd, you will likely want a small class size. Smaller classes enable more individual participation and personalized instruction. Ask the colleges you are reviewing what the average student to teacher ratio is for their classes. If practical you may prefer to monitor one or more classes before making your ultimate determination. This will also give you a chance to talk with some of the students and instructors to get their perspectives regarding the ultrasound tech program also.

Can the Program Accommodate your Schedule? And last you need to confirm that the sonographer  program you finally pick can offer the class schedule you need. This is particularly crucial if you choose to continue working while attending classes. If you must schedule night or weekend classes in the Lyndora PA area, confirm that they are available. If you can only attend part-time, verify if that is an alternative and how many courses or credit hours you would have to carry. Also, ask what the procedure is for making up any classes that you may miss as a result of illness, work or family emergencies.
