Ultrasound Technician Occupation Description

Manchester PA ultrasound tech with patientThere are multiple professional titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also called sonogram techs, diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers) and ultrasound technologists. Regardless of name, they all have the same primary job description, which is to carry out diagnostic ultrasound procedures on patients. Even though many work as generalists there are specializations within the profession, for example in cardiology and pediatrics. The majority work in Manchester PA hospitals, clinics, outpatient diagnostic imaging centers and even private practices. Standard daily job duties of a sonogram tech can involve:

  • Preserving records of patient case histories and details of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Prepping the ultrasound machines for usage and then cleaning and re-calibrating them
  • Moving patients to treatment rooms and making them comfortable
  • Operating equipment while minimizing patient exposure to sound waves
  • Reviewing the results and identifying necessity for supplemental testing

Ultrasound techs must frequently evaluate the performance and safety of their machines. They also are held to a high ethical standard and code of conduct as medical practitioners. In order to maintain that degree of professionalism and remain up to date with medical knowledge, they are mandated to enroll in continuing education programs on an ongoing basis.

Ultrasound Technician Degrees Offered

Manchester PA ultrasound technician performing sonographySonogram technician students have the choice to acquire either an Associate or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will generally take about 18 months to 2 years to accomplish depending on the program and class load. A Bachelor’s Degree will require more time at up to four years to complete. Another alternative for those who have previously earned a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have received a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a related medical field, you can instead choose a certificate program that will require just 12 to 18 months to finish. Something to bear in mind is that the majority of ultrasound technician schools do have a clinical training component as part of their curriculum. It can often be satisfied by participating in an internship program which numerous schools organize through Manchester PA hospitals and clinics. When you have graduated from one of the degree or certificate programs, you will then need to fulfill the certification or licensing prerequisites in Pennsylvania or whichever state you choose to practice in.

Online Sonographer Colleges

student attending online sonography class in Manchester PAAs aforementioned, nearly all ultrasound tech colleges have a clinical component to their programs. So although you can obtain a degree or certificate online, a substantial part of the training will be either held in an on-campus lab or at a sponsored off-campus facility. Clinical training can often be satisfied through an internship at a local Manchester PA hospital, outpatient clinic or family practice. However the balance of the classes and training may be accessed online in your Manchester home. This is especially beneficial for those students that keep working while earning their degrees. In addition online colleges are frequently less expensive than on-campus alternatives. Expenses for commuting and study materials can be lessened also. But similarly as with every sonography college you are reviewing, make sure that the online school you choose is accredited. One of the most highly respected accrediting organizations is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is particularly important for certification, licensing and job placement (more on accreditation later). So if you are disciplined enough to learn outside of the classroom in the convenience of your own home, then online classes could be the right choice for you.

Topics to Ask Ultrasound Technician Schools

Questions to ask Manchester PA ultrasound technician schoolsAs soon as you have determined which degree or certificate that you would like to earn, you can start the process of assessing and comparing sonogram tech schools. You may first want to choose whether you would rather attend classes online or commute to a school campus in the Manchester PA area. Obviously location will be significant if you decide on the latter, and the price of tuition no doubt will be an important qualifier as well. But there are additional variables that you must also take into account, such as if the colleges are accredited and if they provide internship programs. So in order to carry out your due diligence so that you can make your ultimate selection, below are a few questions that you need ask each sonography college before deciding.

Are the Sonogram Technician Colleges Accredited? The majority of ultrasound tech colleges have earned some form of accreditation, whether regional or national. Even so, it’s still imperative to confirm that the school and program are accredited. One of the most highly regarded accrediting agencies in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Schools receiving accreditation from the JRC-DMS have gone through a detailed review of their teachers and educational materials. If the college is online it can also earn accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which focuses on distance or online learning. All accrediting organizations should be acknowledged by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Along with ensuring a superior education, accreditation will also help in obtaining financial aid and student loans, which are often not offered for non-accredited programs. Accreditation might also be a pre-requisite for licensing and certification as required. And numerous Manchester PA employers will only hire a graduate of an accredited program for entry-level jobs.

Are Internships Offered? Find out if the ultrasound tech colleges you are interested in have associations with Manchester PA hospitals or clinics for internship programs. Internships are not only an excellent means to get hands on experience in a clinical environment, they are additionally a way to fulfill the clinical training requirement for most programs. As a supplemental benefit, they may help students and graduates form professional connections in the Manchester medical community and help with obtaining employment.

Is Job Placement Assistance offered? You will undoubtedly want to secure employment quickly after graduating, but getting that first job in a new profession can be difficult without support. Ask if the sonographer schools you are assessing have job assistance programs and what their placement rates are. Rapid and high placement rates are a good indication that the schools have sizable networks and great relationships with Pennsylvania healthcare employers. It also substantiates that their students are well regarded and sought after.

Where is the College Located? For a number of students, the school they decide on will have to be within driving distance of their Manchester PA home. Individuals who have chosen to attend classes online naturally will not have to trouble themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of local internships will be of concern. One thing to consider is that if you decide to enroll in a program that is out of state or perhaps out of your local area, you may have to pay a higher tuition. State colleges normally charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges generally charge a higher tuition to those students that don’t reside within their districts.

What are the Class Sizes ? Unless you are the sort of person that prefers to sit far in the rear of class or get lost in the crowd, you will undoubtedly prefer a smaller class size. Small classes permit more individual participation and one-on-one instruction. Ask the schools you are researching what the average teacher to student ratio is for their classrooms. If practical you may want to sit in on one or more classes before making your final decision. This will also give you a chance to speak with a few of the students and instructors to get their perspectives regarding the sonogram technician program as well.

Does the School Accommodate your Schedule? And last you must confirm that the ultrasound tech  school you finally select can offer the class schedule you need. This is particularly important if you decide to continue working while attending classes. If you need to schedule night or weekend classes in the Manchester PA area, make certain that they are available. If you can only attend part-time, check if that is an option and how many courses or credit hours you would need to carry. Also, learn what the protocol is for making up any classes that you might miss due to illness, work or family obligations.
