They are also referred to as ultrasound technologists, sonogram techs, and diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers). No matter what their title is, they all have the same basic job function, which is to carry out diagnostic ultrasound testing on patients. Even though a number of techs practice as generalists there are specializations within the field, for example in pediatrics and cardiology. Most practice in Mar Lin PA clinics, hospitals, outpatient diagnostic imaging centers and even private practices. Common daily job duties of an ultrasound tech can involve:

  • Maintaining records of patient case histories and details of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Readying the ultrasound machines for usage and then sterilizing and re-calibrating them
  • Transferring patients to treatment rooms and ensuring their comfort

  • Reviewing the results and identifying necessity for additional testing

Sonographers must frequently gauge the safety and performance of their equipment. They also must adhere to a high ethical standard and code of conduct as medical practitioners. In order to sustain that degree of professionalism and stay up to date with medical knowledge, they are mandated to complete continuing education programs on a regular basis.

Ultrasound Tech Degrees Offered

Mar Lin PA ultrasound technician performing sonographyUltrasound tech enrollees have the option to earn either an Associate or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will usually require around 18 months to 2 years to finish depending on the program and class load. A Bachelor’s Degree will require more time at as long as four years to finish. Another option for those who have already received a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have obtained a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a relevant health sector, you can instead choose a certificate program that will require just 12 to 18 months to finish. Something to consider is that most ultrasound technician schools do have a practical training component as part of their curriculum. It often may be satisfied by entering into an internship program which many colleges set up through Mar Lin PA clinics and hospitals. Once you have graduated from any of the certificate or degree programs, you will then need to comply with the certification or licensing requirements in Pennsylvania or whichever state you elect to work in.

Ultrasound Tech Online Schools

student attending online sonography class in Mar Lin PAAs previously mentioned, nearly all ultrasound technician schools have a practical requirement to their programs. So although you can receive a certificate or degree online, a substantial portion of the training will be either carried out in an on-campus lab or at a sponsored off campus facility. Clinical training can usually be satisfied by means of an internship at a local Mar Lin PA outpatient clinic, hospital or family practice. However the balance of the training and classes may be accessed online in your Mar Lin home. This is especially beneficial for those students that continue working while getting their degrees. In addition online colleges are often more affordable than on-campus alternatives. Expenses for commuting and study materials may be lessened as well. But just as with every sonographer college you are considering, confirm that the online school you select is accredited. One of the most highly regarded accrediting organizations is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is particularly significant for certification, licensing and finding employment (more on accreditation later). So if you are motivated enough to learn outside of the classroom in the comfort of your own home, then online classes could be the ideal choice for you.

Subjects to Ask Sonogram Tech Schools

Questions to ask Mar Lin PA ultrasound technician schoolsWhen you have decided on which degree or certificate that you would like to obtain, you can begin the procedure of evaluating and comparing sonogram technician colleges. You may first want to decide whether you will attend classes online or travel to a college campus in the Mar Lin PA area. Naturally location will be significant if you choose the latter, and the cost of tuition no doubt will be an initial qualification as well. But there are other things that you should also take into consideration, such as if the programs are accredited and if they sponsor internship programs. So in order to complete your due diligence so that you can arrive at your final selection, below are some questions that you may want to ask each sonographer program before deciding.

Are the Sonogram Technician Schools Accredited? The majority of sonogram tech schools have acquired some type of accreditation, whether national or regional. However, it’s still imperative to make sure that the program and school are accredited. Among the most highly respected accrediting agencies in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Programs earning accreditation from the JRC-DMS have undergone an extensive review of their instructors and course materials. If the school is online it might also obtain accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which focuses on distance or online learning. All accrediting organizations should be recognized by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Along with ensuring a premium education, accreditation will also assist in securing financial aid and student loans, which are often not offered for non-accredited programs. Accreditation can also be a pre-requisite for licensing and certification as required. And many Mar Lin PA employers will only hire a graduate of an accredited college for entry level positions.

Are Internships Offered? Find out if the sonogram tech programs you are assessing have associations with Mar Lin PA hospitals or clinics for internship programs. Not only are internships a terrific means to obtain hands on training in a clinical environment, they are additionally a means to fulfill the practical training requirement for most programs. As a secondary benefit, they may help students and graduates develop professional connections in the Mar Lin medical community and help with obtaining employment.

Is Job Placement Assistance offered? You will undoubtedly wish to hit the ground running after graduation, but getting that first job in a new field can be challenging without assistance. Ask if the ultrasound tech programs you are interviewing have job placement programs and what their placement rates are. High and rapid placement rates are an excellent indication that the schools have substantial networks and great relationships with Pennsylvania healthcare employers. It also corroborates that their students are well regarded and sought after.

Where is the Program Located? For many students, the college they decide on will need to be within travelling distance of their Mar Lin PA residence. Students who have opted to attend classes online naturally will not have to trouble themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of area internships will be of concern. One thing to bear in mind is that if you decide to enroll in a school that is out of state or perhaps out of your local area, you might need to pay a higher tuition. State colleges often charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges often charge a higher tuition for those students that don’t reside within their districts.

How Large are the Classes ? Unless you are the type of person that prefers to sit way in the back of class or get lost in the crowd, you will likely want a smaller class size. Smaller classes allow for more individual participation and personalized instruction. Ask the schools you are considering what the average student to teacher ratio is for their classrooms. If practical you may prefer to sit in on one or more classes before making your ultimate decision. This will also give you an opportunity to talk with a few of the students and instructors to get their perspectives regarding the sonogram technician program also.

Does the Program Accommodate your Schedule? And finally you need to confirm that the ultrasound tech  school you finally pick can furnish the class schedule you need. This is particularly important if you decide to continue working while attending school. If you need to schedule night or weekend classes in the Mar Lin PA area, confirm that they are offered. If you can only attend part-time, check if that is an alternative and how many credit hours or courses you would need to enroll in. Also, ask what the procedure is for making up any classes that you might miss because of illness, work or family obligations.
