Ultrasound Technician Job Description

Marion Heights PA ultrasound tech with patientThere are several acceptable titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also referred to as sonogram techs, diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers) and ultrasound technologists. No matter what their title is, they all have the same primary job description, which is to carry out diagnostic ultrasound testing on patients. Although a number of techs practice as generalists there are specialties within the profession, for instance in cardiology and pediatrics. Most practice in Marion Heights PA clinics, hospitals, outpatient diagnostic imaging centers and even private practices. Common daily job functions of an ultrasound tech can consist of:

  • Preserving records of patient case histories and details of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Prepping the ultrasound machines for use and then sterilizing and recalibrating them
  • Escorting patients to treatment rooms and ensuring their comfort
  • Using equipment while minimizing patient exposure to sound waves
  • Evaluating results and identifying necessity for supplemental testing

Ultrasound techs must regularly evaluate the safety and performance of their machines. They also must adhere to a high ethical standard and code of conduct as health practitioners. So as to sustain that level of professionalism and remain current with medical knowledge, they are required to complete continuing education programs on a regular basis.

Sonogram Technician Degree Programs Available

Marion Heights PA ultrasound technician performing sonographySonogram tech students have the opportunity to acquire either an Associate or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will generally take around 18 months to 2 years to finish dependent on the program and class load. A Bachelor’s Degree will require more time at as long as 4 years to finalize. Another option for individuals who have previously earned a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have earned a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a related health field, you can instead choose a certificate program that will require only 12 to 18 months to complete. One thing to consider is that almost all sonographer schools do have a practical training component as part of their course of study. It can often be fulfilled by taking part in an internship program which many colleges sponsor with Marion Heights PA clinics and hospitals. Once you have graduated from one of the certificate or degree programs, you will then have to comply with the licensing or certification prerequisites in Pennsylvania or whatever state you elect to work in.

Online Sonogram Tech Schools

student attending online sonography class in Marion Heights PAAs previously mentioned, virtually all sonogram tech colleges have a clinical component to their programs. So although you can earn a certificate or degree online, a significant part of the training will be either conducted in an on-campus laboratory or at a sponsored off campus facility. Practical training can usually be fulfilled by means of an internship at a local Marion Heights PA outpatient clinic, hospital or family practice. However the remainder of the classes and training can be attended online in your Marion Heights home. This is particularly beneficial for those individuals that continue working while earning their degrees. In addition online schools are frequently less expensive than on-campus options. Costs for commuting and study materials may be reduced also. But just as with every sonography program you are considering, confirm that the online program you select is accredited. Among the most highly respected accrediting organizations is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is especially significant for certification, licensing and job placement (more on accreditation later). So if you are dedicated enough to learn outside of the classroom in the comfort of your own home, then an online degree may be the ideal choice for you.

What to Ask Sonogram Tech Schools

Questions to ask Marion Heights PA ultrasound technician schoolsAfter you have determined which degree or certificate that you would like to earn, you can initiate the procedure of reviewing and comparing ultrasound technician colleges. You may first want to decide whether you will attend classes online or travel to a college campus in the Marion Heights PA area. Clearly location will be important if you decide on the latter, and the price of tuition no doubt will be an important qualification also. But there are other things that you must also take into account, for example if the programs are accredited and if they offer internships. Therefore in order to perform your due diligence so that you can make your ultimate selection, below are several questions that you may want to ask each ultrasound tech school before deciding.

Are the Sonogram Technician Colleges Accredited? A large number of sonogram tech schools have acquired some type of accreditation, whether regional or national. Even so, it’s still imperative to confirm that the program and school are accredited. One of the most highly regarded accrediting organizations in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Programs receiving accreditation from the JRC-DMS have undergone a rigorous examination of their instructors and course materials. If the school is online it may also receive accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which focuses on online or distance learning. All accrediting agencies should be recognized by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. In addition to guaranteeing a premium education, accreditation will also assist in getting financial assistance and student loans, which are many times not accessible for non-accredited programs. Accreditation may also be a pre-requisite for certification and licensing as required. And many Marion Heights PA employers will only hire a graduate of an accredited college for entry level openings.

Are Internship Programs Offered? Inquire if the ultrasound technician programs you are reviewing have partnerships with Marion Heights PA hospitals or clinics for internship programs. Not only are internships a great way to receive practical experience in a clinical setting, they are also a way to satisfy the practical training requirement for most programs. As a secondary benefit, they can help students and graduates form professional connections in the Marion Heights healthcare community and help with job placement.

Is Job Placement Help offered? You will most likely wish to secure employment quickly after graduation, but finding that first job in a new field can be challenging without support. Find out if the sonographer programs you are assessing have job placement programs and what their placement rates are. High and rapid placement rates are an excellent indication that the schools have substantial networks and great relationships with Pennsylvania healthcare employers. It also corroborates that their students are well regarded and sought after.

Where is the College Located? For a number of students, the college they select will have to be within travelling distance of their Marion Heights PA home. Individuals who have chosen to attend online classes obviously will not have to trouble themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of local internships will be of concern. One thing to bear in mind is that if you choose to enroll in a college that is out of state or even out of your local area, you may be required to pay a higher tuition. State colleges often charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges typically charge a higher tuition for those students that live outside of their districts.

What are the Class Sizes ? Unless you are the sort of person that prefers to sit far in the back of class or get lost in the crowd, you will likely prefer a smaller class size. Smaller classes allow for more individual participation and personalized instruction. Ask the colleges you are looking at what the typical teacher to student ratio is for their classes. If practical you may prefer to monitor one or more classes before making your final determination. This will also give you an opportunity to talk with a few of the students and instructors to get their perspectives regarding the sonogram tech program as well.

Can the College Accommodate your Schedule? And last you need to verify that the sonographer  school you finally choose can provide the class schedule you need. This is particularly essential if you decide to continue working while attending classes. If you need to schedule night or weekend classes in the Marion Heights PA area, make sure that they are offered. If you can only enroll on a part-time basis, check if that is an option and how many courses or credit hours you would need to carry. Also, find out what the protocol is for making up any classes that you may miss because of illness, work or family obligations.
