Sonographer Job Summary

Martinsburg PA ultrasound tech with patientThere are several acceptable titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also called ultrasound technologists, sonogram techs, and diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers). Regardless of name, they all have the same primary job description, which is to perform diagnostic ultrasound techniques on patients. While a number of techs practice as generalists there are specializations within the field, for example in pediatrics and cardiology. The majority work in Martinsburg PA hospitals, clinics, outpatient diagnostic imaging centers and even private practices. Routine daily job tasks of a sonogram technician may include:

  • Maintaining records of patient medical histories and specifics of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Prepping the ultrasound machines for use and then sterilizing and re-calibrating them
  • Transferring patients to treatment rooms and making them comfortable
  • Utilizing equipment while minimizing patient exposure to sound waves
  • Evaluating results and identifying necessity for further testing

Sonographers must frequently assess the safety and performance of their equipment. They also are held to a high ethical standard and code of conduct as medical practitioners. In order to maintain that degree of professionalism and stay up to date with medical knowledge, they are mandated to complete continuing education training on a regular basis.

Sonogram Tech Degrees Available

Martinsburg PA ultrasound technician performing sonographyUltrasound tech students have the choice to earn either an Associate Degree or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will usually require about 18 months to 2 years to finish dependent on the course load and program. A Bachelor’s Degree will take longer at up to four years to complete. Another alternative for individuals who have previously obtained a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have received a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a related medical sector, you can instead choose a certificate program that will require just 12 to 18 months to complete. One thing to keep in mind is that most sonographer schools do have a practical training element as part of their curriculum. It can often be satisfied by entering into an internship program which numerous schools sponsor through Martinsburg PA hospitals and clinics. After you have graduated from any of the degree or certificate programs, you will then need to fulfill the certification or licensing prerequisites in Pennsylvania or whichever state you elect to work in.

Ultrasound Tech Online Degrees

student attending online sonography class in Martinsburg PAAs earlier discussed, almost all ultrasound tech schools have a clinical component to their programs. So although you can receive a degree or certificate online, a significant part of the training will be either held in an on campus lab or at an authorized off-campus medical care provider. Clinical training can often be fulfilled by means of an internship at a local Martinsburg PA hospital, outpatient clinic or private practice. But the remainder of the training and classes may be attended online in your Martinsburg home. This is especially convenient for those students that keep working while earning their degrees. In addition online colleges are frequently less expensive than traditional options. Expenditures for study materials and commuting can be reduced as well. But just as with every sonographer college you are considering, check that the online school you ultimately pick is accredited. One of the most highly regarded accrediting organizations is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is particularly significant for certification, licensing and finding employment (more on accreditation later). So if you are disciplined enough to attend classes outside of the classroom in the comfort of your own home, then an online school may be the ideal option for you.

Topics to Ask Ultrasound Technician Colleges

Questions to ask Martinsburg PA ultrasound technician schoolsAs soon as you have decided on the type of degree or certificate that you would like to earn, you can begin the procedure of evaluating and comparing ultrasound technician colleges. You may first want to choose whether you would rather attend classes online or commute to a school campus in the Martinsburg PA area. Clearly location will be important if you select the latter, and the cost of tuition undoubtedly will be an important qualification as well. But there are additional variables that you should also take into consideration, for example if the schools are accredited and if they offer internships. So in order to perform your due diligence so that you can make your final selection, following are several questions that you need ask each sonography program prior to making a decision.

Are the Sonogram Tech Schools Accredited? The majority of ultrasound technician colleges have obtained some type of accreditation, whether regional or national. However, it’s still important to confirm that the program and school are accredited. One of the most highly respected accrediting agencies in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Programs receiving accreditation from the JRC-DMS have undergone a detailed assessment of their instructors and course materials. If the school is online it may also earn accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which targets online or distance education. All accrediting organizations should be acknowledged by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Besides guaranteeing a quality education, accreditation will also assist in acquiring financial assistance and student loans, which are often not accessible for non-accredited schools. Accreditation might also be a pre-requisite for licensing and certification as required. And many Martinsburg PA health facilities will only hire graduates of an accredited program for entry-level positions.

Are Internship Programs Sponsored? Find out if the ultrasound tech programs you are assessing have associations with Martinsburg PA clinics or hospitals for internship programs. Internships are not only an excellent means to obtain practical experience in a clinical setting, they are also a way to fulfill the clinical training requirement for most programs. As a secondary benefit, they may help students and graduates establish professional relationships in the Martinsburg medical community and assist with job placement.

Is Job Placement Assistance provided? You will undoubtedly wish to secure employment quickly after graduation, but getting that first job in a new field can be difficult without support. Find out if the sonographer schools you are assessing have job assistance programs and what their success rates are. High and rapid placement rates are an excellent sign that the schools have large networks and good relationships with Pennsylvania healthcare employers. It also substantiates that their graduates are highly regarded and sought after.

Where is the School Located? For a lot of students, the college they decide on will have to be within commuting distance of their Martinsburg PA residence. Those who have decided to attend online classes obviously will not have to trouble themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of local internships will be of importance. Something to consider is that if you decide to enroll in a college that is out of state or perhaps out of your local area, you may have to pay a higher tuition. State colleges commonly charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges usually charge a higher tuition to those students that live outside of their districts.

What are the Class Sizes ? Unless you are the sort of person that likes to sit far in the back of class or get lost in the crowd, you will likely want a small class size. Smaller classes allow for more individual participation and personalized instruction. Ask the schools you are looking at what the typical student to teacher ratio is for their classes. If practical you may want to sit in on one or more classes before making your ultimate decision. This will also give you an opportunity to talk with several of the instructors and students to get their perspectives regarding the ultrasound tech program as well.

Can the Program Accommodate your Schedule? And last you must verify that the ultrasound tech  college you finally choose can provide the class schedule you need. This is especially important if you opt to continue working while attending classes. If you must schedule night or weekend classes in the Martinsburg PA area, make certain that they are offered. If you can only enroll on a part-time basis, find out if that is an alternative and how many courses or credit hours you would have to enroll in. Also, ask what the protocol is for making up any classes that you may miss because of illness, work or family obligations.
