Ultrasound Tech Job Description

Matamoras PA ultrasound tech with patientThere are various acceptable titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also referred to as ultrasound technologists, sonogram techs, and diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers). No matter what their title is, they all have the same primary job function, which is to carry out diagnostic ultrasound procedures on patients. While many practice as generalists there are specialties within the profession, for example in pediatrics and cardiology. The majority work in Matamoras PA clinics, hospitals, private practices or outpatient diagnostic imaging centers. Routine daily work duties of an ultrasound technician can involve:

  • Preserving records of patient case histories and specifics of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Preparing the ultrasound machines for testing and then cleaning and recalibrating them
  • Escorting patients to treatment rooms and making them comfortable
  • Operating equipment while minimizing patient exposure to sound waves
  • Evaluating results and identifying necessity for additional testing

Ultrasound techs must frequently evaluate the safety and performance of their equipment. They also must adhere to a high ethical standard and code of conduct as medical practitioners. In order to sustain that level of professionalism and remain up to date with medical knowledge, they are mandated to complete continuing education programs on an ongoing basis.

Ultrasound Tech Degree Programs Offered

Matamoras PA ultrasound technician performing sonographyUltrasound technician students have the opportunity to acquire either an Associate Degree or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will typically involve about 18 months to 2 years to accomplish depending on the course load and program. A Bachelor’s Degree will require more time at as long as four years to finalize. Another option for individuals who have already received a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have earned a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a relevant medical field, you can enroll in a certificate program that will take only 12 to 18 months to finish. Something to keep in mind is that most ultrasound technician programs do have a practical training element as part of their curriculum. It often may be satisfied by participating in an internship program which many colleges organize with Matamoras PA clinics and hospitals. When you have graduated from any of the certificate or degree programs, you will then have to satisfy the certification or licensing prerequisites in Pennsylvania or whatever state you decide to practice in.

Ultrasound Technician Online Classes

student attending online sonography class in Matamoras PAAs aforementioned, almost all sonogram tech colleges have a practical requirement to their programs. So while you can obtain a degree or certificate online, a substantial part of the training will be either held in an on-campus laboratory or at an approved off campus medical care provider. Clinical training can often be fulfilled through an internship at a local Matamoras PA outpatient clinic, hospital or private practice. However the remainder of the classes and training may be accessed online in your Matamoras home. This is particularly convenient for those students that keep working while earning their degrees. Plus online colleges are many times less expensive than traditional alternatives. Expenses for study materials and commuting can be reduced as well. But similarly as with every sonographer college you are reviewing, verify that the online school you select is accredited. One of the most highly regarded accrediting agencies is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is particularly significant for certification, licensing and finding employment (more on accreditation later). So if you are motivated enough to attend classes outside of the classroom in the convenience of your own home, then an online school could be the ideal choice for you.

Points to Ask Sonogram Tech Programs

Questions to ask Matamoras PA ultrasound technician schoolsNow that you have determined which certificate or degree that you would like to obtain, you can begin the process of assessing and comparing sonogram technician colleges. You may first want to decide whether you will attend classes online or travel to a school campus in the Matamoras PA area. Of course location will be significant if you decide on the latter, and the price of tuition undoubtedly will be an important qualification also. But there are other things that you must also take into consideration, for instance if the programs are accredited and if they provide internship programs. Therefore in order to perform your due diligence so that you can arrive at your final selection, following are some questions that you need ask each ultrasound tech college prior to making a decision.

Are the Ultrasound Technician Colleges Accredited? The majority of sonogram tech schools have obtained some type of accreditation, whether regional or national. Nevertheless, it’s still important to confirm that the school and program are accredited. One of the most highly regarded accrediting agencies in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Programs earning accreditation from the JRC-DMS have undergone a detailed assessment of their teachers and course materials. If the program is online it may also obtain accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which focuses on online or distance education. All accrediting agencies should be acknowledged by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Besides ensuring a premium education, accreditation will also assist in obtaining financial assistance and student loans, which are often not offered for non-accredited programs. Accreditation might also be a pre-requisite for certification and licensing as required. And numerous Matamoras PA employers will only hire graduates of an accredited school for entry-level positions.

Are Internship Programs Sponsored? Inquire if the sonogram tech schools you are assessing have partnerships with Matamoras PA clinics or hospitals for internship programs. Not only are internships a great means to receive practical experience in a clinical setting, they are also a way to fulfill the clinical training requirement for the majority of programs. As a secondary benefit, they can help students and graduates establish professional relationships in the Matamoras healthcare community and help with obtaining employment.

Is Job Placement Help available? You will most likely wish to secure employment quickly after graduating, but finding that initial job in a new profession can be challenging without support. Find out if the sonographer schools you are interviewing have job assistance programs and what their placement rates are. High and rapid placement rates are a good indication that the schools have sizable networks and good relationships with Pennsylvania healthcare employers. It also confirms that their graduates are well regarded and sought after.

Where is the School Located? For a number of students, the school they pick will need to be within driving distance of their Matamoras PA home. Those who have opted to attend online classes naturally will not have to worry themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of area internships will be of concern. One thing to keep in mind is that if you choose to enroll in a program that is out of state or even out of your local area, you may have to pay a higher tuition. State colleges typically charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges often charge a higher tuition for those students that don’t reside within their districts.

What Size are the Classes ? Unless you are the kind of person that prefers to sit far in the rear of the classroom or hide in the crowd, you will probably want a small class size. Smaller classes allow for more individual participation and personalized instruction. Ask the colleges you are considering what the average student to teacher ratio is for their classes. If practical you may prefer to monitor one or more classes before making your final determination. This will also give you an opportunity to speak with several of the students and instructors to get their perspectives regarding the ultrasound technician program as well.

Does the School Accommodate your Schedule? And last you need to confirm that the sonographer  program you finally choose can provide the class schedule you need. This is especially essential if you decide to continue working while attending classes. If you need to schedule evening or weekend classes in the Matamoras PA area, make sure that they are offered. If you can only enroll on a part-time basis, check if that is an alternative and how many courses or credit hours you would need to carry. Also, ask what the protocol is for making up any classes that you may miss because of illness, work or family obligations.
