Ultrasound Tech Work Summary

Mc Veytown PA ultrasound tech with patientThere are multiple professional titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also referred to as ultrasound technologists, sonogram techs, and diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers). No matter what their title is, they all have the same primary job description, which is to perform diagnostic ultrasound techniques on patients. Even though many work as generalists there are specialties within the field, for instance in pediatrics and cardiology. The majority work in Mc Veytown PA hospitals, clinics, private practices or outpatient diagnostic imaging centers. Standard daily job functions of a sonogram technician may consist of:

  • Maintaining records of patient case histories and specifics of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Prepping the ultrasound machines for use and then cleaning and recalibrating them
  • Moving patients to treatment rooms and making them comfortable
  • Using equipment while minimizing patient exposure to sound waves
  • Assessing results and determining necessity for supplemental testing

Ultrasound techs must routinely gauge the safety and performance of their equipment. They also are held to a high professional standard and code of conduct as health practitioners. So as to maintain that level of professionalism and stay current with medical knowledge, they are required to enroll in continuing education courses on an ongoing basis.

Sonogram Technician Degree Programs Available

Mc Veytown PA ultrasound technician performing sonographyUltrasound tech enrollees have the choice to earn either an Associate or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will usually involve about 18 months to 2 years to accomplish dependent on the program and class load. A Bachelor’s Degree will take longer at up to four years to finish. Another alternative for individuals who have previously received a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have obtained a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a relevant health sector, you can enroll in a certificate program that will require only 12 to 18 months to finish. One thing to keep in mind is that the majority of ultrasound technician schools do have a clinical training component as a portion of their curriculum. It can often be fulfilled by participating in an internship program which many schools sponsor with Mc Veytown PA clinics and hospitals. After you have graduated from one of the degree or certificate programs, you will then need to fulfill the licensing or certification prerequisites in Pennsylvania or whichever state you choose to work in.

Ultrasound Technician Online Degrees

student attending online sonography class in Mc Veytown PAAs earlier discussed, nearly all ultrasound technician colleges have a clinical component to their programs. So while you can earn a degree or certificate online, a significant portion of the training will be either conducted in an on campus laboratory or at an authorized off campus facility. Clinical training can often be fulfilled through an internship at a local Mc Veytown PA outpatient clinic, hospital or family practice. But the remainder of the training and classes can be accessed online in your Mc Veytown home. This is especially convenient for those individuals that keep working while earning their degrees. Plus online schools are frequently less expensive than traditional options. Costs for study materials and commuting can be reduced also. But just as with every ultrasound tech college you are reviewing, make sure that the online program you choose is accredited. One of the most highly regarded accrediting organizations is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is particularly crucial for certification, licensing and finding employment (more on accreditation later). So if you are motivated enough to learn away from the classroom in the convenience of your own home, then an online school may be the ideal option for you.

Subjects to Ask Ultrasound Technician Schools

Questions to ask Mc Veytown PA ultrasound technician schoolsAs soon as you have determined which certificate or degree that you would like to earn, you can start the procedure of evaluating and comparing sonogram technician colleges. You may first want to choose whether you would rather access classes online or travel to a school campus in the Mc Veytown PA area. Certainly location will be important if you select the latter, and the price of tuition no doubt will be an initial qualification as well. But there are additional factors that you must also take into account, for instance if the schools are accredited and if they sponsor internships. So in order to complete your due diligence so that you can make your final selection, below are some questions that you may want to ask each sonography program prior to making a decision.

Are the Sonogram Tech Schools Accredited? A large number of sonogram technician schools have received some form of accreditation, whether regional or national. However, it’s still important to verify that the program and school are accredited. One of the most highly regarded accrediting agencies in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Schools obtaining accreditation from the JRC-DMS have undergone a detailed examination of their instructors and educational materials. If the college is online it can also obtain accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which focuses on online or distance learning. All accrediting agencies should be recognized by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. In addition to ensuring a premium education, accreditation will also help in securing financial assistance and student loans, which are often not offered for non-accredited schools. Accreditation might also be a pre-requisite for certification and licensing as required. And many Mc Veytown PA employers will only hire graduates of an accredited college for entry level positions.

Are Internship Programs Sponsored? Inquire if the ultrasound tech colleges you are evaluating have associations with Mc Veytown PA hospitals or clinics for internship programs. Not only are internships a great manner to receive practical experience in a clinical setting, they are also a means to fulfill the clinical training requirement for most programs. As a secondary benefit, they may help graduates and students establish professional relationships in the Mc Veytown healthcare community and help with obtaining employment.

Is Job Placement Assistance provided? You will undoubtedly wish to secure employment quickly after graduation, but finding that initial job in a new field can be challenging without help. Ask if the ultrasound tech schools you are reviewing have job placement programs and what their placement rates are. High and rapid placement rates are an excellent sign that the schools have sizable networks and good relationships with Pennsylvania healthcare employers. It also corroborates that their graduates are highly regarded and sought after.

Where is the Program Located? For a lot of students, the school they select will need to be within travelling distance of their Mc Veytown PA residence. Individuals who have chosen to attend online classes obviously will not have to trouble themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of area internships will be of importance. Something to keep in mind is that if you choose to enroll in a college that is out of state or perhaps out of your local area, you may need to pay a higher tuition. State colleges commonly charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges generally charge a higher tuition to those students that live outside of their districts.

How Large are the Classes ? Unless you are the type of person that prefers to sit way in the back of class or hide in the crowd, you will probably prefer a smaller class size. Small classes enable more individual participation and one-on-one instruction. Ask the schools you are researching what the typical student to teacher ratio is for their classes. If practical you may prefer to monitor one or more classes before making your ultimate decision. This will also give you a chance to talk with several of the instructors and students to get their opinions regarding the ultrasound tech program as well.

Does the School Accommodate your Schedule? And last you need to verify that the sonographer  program you finally choose can provide the class schedule you need. This is especially important if you opt to continue working while you attend school. If you must schedule night or weekend classes in the Mc Veytown PA area, confirm that they are available. If you can only attend part-time, find out if that is an alternative and how many courses or credit hours you would need to enroll in. Also, ask what the protocol is for making up any classes that you might miss because of work, illness or family obligations.

    McVeytown, Pennsylvania

McVeytown is a borough in Mifflin County, Pennsylvania, on the west bank of the Juniata River. Formerly Waynesburg, it was settled in 1762, laid out in 1795,[3] and incorporated in 1833.[4] The population was 405 at the 2000 census. The "Father of Pennsylvania Forestry", Dr. Joseph Rothrock was born in McVeytown on April 9, 1839. He was largely responsible for the acquisition of the lands that became Pennsylvania state parks and forests, including Rothrock State Forest.

The settlement of what is now McVeytown was begun by Samuel Holliday in 1755. But it wasn’t until 1762 that he settled in permanently and not until 1795 that the town of Waynesburg (present day McVeytown) was laid out. John McVey owned the land and was the founder of McVeytown.

Samuel, Adam, John and William Holliday, and his two sisters, Elizabeth and Nancy, the latter of which would become the wife of Andrew Bratton, emigrated to the U.S. about 1745 and located on the “manor” of Lancaster County. They moved later to moved to Conococheague in what is now Franklin County, and John removed to Path Valley, where he lived and died. Adam and William took up land at Hollidaysburg, and it was from him that the borough took its name. In early 1775, Samuel Holliday and Andrew Bratton, just after the New Purchase of the Indians, went out into that region in search for land to settle. After they made a decision on the land, they went to the land-office, at the time located in Philadelphia, and in 1775 received their warrants. Bratton was in what is now Bratton Township, and Holliday at what is now McVeytown and vicinity.[3]
