Ultrasound Technician Occupation Description

Mechanicsburg PA ultrasound tech with patientThere are multiple professional titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also called sonogram techs, diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers) and ultrasound technologists. Regardless of name, they all have the same basic job function, which is to implement diagnostic ultrasound techniques on patients. Even though a number of techs work as generalists there are specializations within the field, for instance in pediatrics and cardiology. The majority practice in Mechanicsburg PA hospitals, clinics, outpatient diagnostic imaging centers and even private practices. Common daily work tasks of a sonogram tech can include:

  • Preserving records of patient medical histories and specifics of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Preparing the ultrasound machines for testing and then sterilizing and recalibrating them
  • Escorting patients to treatment rooms and making them comfortable
  • Operating equipment while minimizing patient exposure to sound waves
  • Reviewing the results and determining need for supplemental testing

Ultrasound techs must regularly assess the performance and safety of their equipment. They also must adhere to a high ethical standard and code of conduct as medical practitioners. In order to sustain that degree of professionalism and remain current with medical knowledge, they are mandated to enroll in continuing education programs on a regular basis.

Sonogram Technician Degree Programs Offered

Mechanicsburg PA ultrasound technician performing sonographyUltrasound technician enrollees have the opportunity to earn either an Associate Degree or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will generally require about 18 months to 2 years to accomplish dependent on the program and class load. A Bachelor’s Degree will take longer at up to four years to finish. Another alternative for those who have previously received a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have received a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a related health field, you can enroll in a certificate program that will require just 12 to 18 months to finish. One thing to bear in mind is that most sonographer schools do have a practical training component as part of their course of study. It often may be fulfilled by entering into an internship program which numerous schools set up with Mechanicsburg PA hospitals and clinics. After you have graduated from one of the certificate or degree programs, you will then have to fulfill the certification or licensing requirements in Pennsylvania or whichever state you decide to practice in.

Online Ultrasound Tech Schools

student attending online sonography class in Mechanicsburg PAAs aforementioned, virtually all sonogram tech colleges have a clinical component to their programs. So although you can earn a degree or certificate online, a substantial portion of the training will be either conducted in an on-campus laboratory or at a sponsored off-campus medical care provider. Practical training can typically be satisfied through an internship at a local Mechanicsburg PA outpatient clinic, hospital or family practice. However the rest of the classes and training may be accessed online in your Mechanicsburg home. This is particularly convenient for those individuals that continue working while earning their degrees. Plus online programs are often more affordable than on-campus alternatives. Costs for commuting and study materials can be reduced as well. But similarly as with any sonographer program you are looking at, check that the online program you select is accredited. One of the most highly regarded accrediting agencies is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is particularly significant for certification, licensing and finding employment (more on accreditation later). So if you are motivated enough to attend classes outside of the classroom in the convenience of your own home, then an online degree could be the ideal option for you.

Points to Ask Sonogram Tech Colleges

Questions to ask Mechanicsburg PA ultrasound technician schoolsAfter you have decided on the type of certificate or degree that you would like to earn, you can begin the procedure of evaluating and comparing ultrasound tech schools. You will first probably want to choose whether you will attend classes online or commute to a school campus in the Mechanicsburg PA area. Naturally location will be important if you decide on the latter, and the cost of tuition undoubtedly will be an initial qualifier as well. But there are other things that you must also take into consideration, for example if the programs are accredited and if they sponsor internship programs. Therefore in order to carry out your due diligence so that you can arrive at your ultimate selection, following are several questions that you may want to ask each ultrasound tech program prior to making a decision.

Are the Ultrasound Technician Colleges Accredited? Most sonogram technician colleges have acquired some form of accreditation, whether regional or national. However, it’s still crucial to make sure that the program and school are accredited. One of the most highly regarded accrediting agencies in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Schools earning accreditation from the JRC-DMS have gone through a rigorous examination of their instructors and course materials. If the college is online it may also obtain accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which focuses on online or distance education. All accrediting agencies should be recognized by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Along with guaranteeing a premium education, accreditation will also assist in obtaining financial assistance and student loans, which are often not available for non-accredited programs. Accreditation can also be a pre-requisite for licensing and certification as required. And a number of Mechanicsburg PA health facilities will only hire graduates of an accredited college for entry-level openings.

Are Internship Programs Sponsored? Find out if the ultrasound tech schools you are interested in have associations with Mechanicsburg PA hospitals or clinics for internship programs. Not only are internships an excellent way to get hands on training in a clinical setting, they are also a way to satisfy the clinical training requirement for the majority of programs. As an ancillary benefit, they may help students and graduates develop professional connections in the Mechanicsburg health care community and assist with obtaining employment.

Is Job Placement Help offered? You will most likely wish to hit the ground running after graduating, but getting that initial job in a new profession can be difficult without support. Find out if the ultrasound tech programs you are considering have job assistance programs and what their placement rates are. Rapid and high placement rates are a good sign that the schools have large networks and good relationships with Pennsylvania healthcare employers. It also substantiates that their students are well regarded and in demand.

Where is the College Located? For a lot of students, the school they pick will have to be within commuting distance of their Mechanicsburg PA home. Individuals who have chosen to attend online classes obviously will not have to worry themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of area internships will be of concern. Something to keep in mind is that if you choose to enroll in a program that is out of state or perhaps out of your local area, you might have to pay a higher tuition. State colleges typically charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges generally charge a higher tuition for those students that live outside of their districts.

How Large are the Classes ? Unless you are the sort of student that likes to sit far in the rear of the classroom or hide in the crowd, you will probably prefer a smaller class size. Small classes permit more individual participation and personalized instruction. Ask the colleges you are researching what the typical teacher to student ratio is for their classes. If practical you may prefer to monitor one or more classes before making your ultimate determination. This will also give you a chance to talk with a few of the students and instructors to get their opinions regarding the ultrasound tech program also.

Does the School Accommodate your Schedule? And finally you must confirm that the ultrasound tech  school you finally pick can offer the class schedule you need. This is especially crucial if you choose to continue working while attending school. If you need to schedule night or weekend classes in the Mechanicsburg PA area, make certain that they are available. If you can only attend part-time, check if that is an option and how many courses or credit hours you would have to enroll in. Also, ask what the procedure is for making up any classes that you might miss due to work, illness or family obligations.
