Sonographer Job Summary

Middleport PA ultrasound tech with patientThere are several professional titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also called ultrasound technologists, sonogram techs, and diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers). Regardless of name, they all have the same primary job description, which is to perform diagnostic ultrasound procedures on patients. While many practice as generalists there are specializations within the field, for instance in pediatrics and cardiology. Most work in Middleport PA hospitals, clinics, private practices or outpatient diagnostic imaging centers. Common daily work functions of a sonogram tech may include:

  • Keeping records of patient case histories and details of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Readying the ultrasound machines for usage and then cleaning and re-calibrating them
  • Transferring patients to treatment rooms and making them comfortable
  • Utilizing equipment while minimizing patient exposure to sound waves
  • Reviewing the results and determining necessity for additional testing

Ultrasound techs must frequently evaluate the safety and performance of their machines. They also must adhere to a high professional standard and code of conduct as medical practitioners. In order to maintain that degree of professionalism and stay up to date with medical knowledge, they are required to complete continuing education training on a regular basis.

Ultrasound Technician Degree Programs Offered

Middleport PA ultrasound technician performing sonographySonogram tech enrollees have the choice to earn either an Associate Degree or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will generally involve about 18 months to 2 years to complete based upon the program and class load. A Bachelor’s Degree will require more time at as long as four years to finalize. Another alternative for individuals who have previously obtained a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have received a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a relevant health field, you can instead choose a certificate program that will take just 12 to 18 months to finish. One thing to consider is that the majority of sonographer colleges do have a practical training component as a portion of their curriculum. It often may be satisfied by taking part in an internship program which numerous colleges sponsor through Middleport PA clinics and hospitals. After you have graduated from any of the degree or certificate programs, you will then have to satisfy the certification or licensing requirements in Pennsylvania or whatever state you choose to practice in.

Online Sonogram Tech Classes

student attending online sonography class in Middleport PAAs earlier discussed, almost all sonogram tech schools have a clinical requirement to their programs. So while you can receive a degree or certificate online, a substantial portion of the training will be either conducted in an on campus laboratory or at an authorized off-campus medical care provider. Practical training can typically be fulfilled through an internship at a local Middleport PA hospital, outpatient clinic or private practice. However the rest of the classes and training may be attended online in your Middleport home. This is especially beneficial for those individuals that continue working while earning their degrees. Plus online colleges are often more affordable than traditional options. Expenditures for commuting and study materials may be lessened as well. But similarly as with every ultrasound tech school you are looking at, check that the online program you choose is accredited. One of the most highly respected accrediting agencies is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is particularly important for certification, licensing and finding employment (more on accreditation later). So if you are dedicated enough to attend classes outside of the classroom in the convenience of your own home, then online classes may be the ideal choice for you.

Points to Ask Sonography Schools

Questions to ask Middleport PA ultrasound technician schoolsAs soon as you have determined which degree or certificate that you would like to obtain, you can initiate the process of reviewing and comparing sonogram technician schools. You will first probably want to decide whether you would rather access classes online or travel to a school campus in the Middleport PA area. Naturally location will be critical if you select the latter, and the price of tuition no doubt will be an initial qualifier as well. But there are additional variables that you must also take into account, for example if the schools are accredited and if they provide internships. Therefore in order to perform your due diligence so that you can make your ultimate selection, following are a few questions that you need ask each sonographer college before deciding.

Are the Ultrasound Tech Programs Accredited? The majority of ultrasound technician colleges have received some type of accreditation, whether regional or national. Nevertheless, it’s still important to confirm that the program and school are accredited. One of the most highly regarded accrediting organizations in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Programs earning accreditation from the JRC-DMS have gone through a detailed examination of their teachers and course materials. If the program is online it can also earn accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which targets distance or online education. All accrediting agencies should be recognized by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. In addition to guaranteeing a quality education, accreditation will also assist in getting financial assistance and student loans, which are often not available for non-accredited colleges. Accreditation may also be a pre-requisite for certification and licensing as required. And numerous Middleport PA health facilities will only hire a graduate of an accredited school for entry level openings.

Are Internships Sponsored? Inquire if the sonogram technician programs you are reviewing have partnerships with Middleport PA hospitals or clinics for internship programs. Internships are not only a great manner to obtain practical training in a clinical environment, they are also a means to satisfy the practical training requirement for most programs. As a supplemental benefit, they may help graduates and students establish professional connections in the Middleport healthcare community and assist with obtaining employment.

Is Job Placement Assistance provided? You will most likely want to secure employment quickly after graduating, but finding that initial job in a new field can be challenging without support. Ask if the sonographer schools you are assessing have job assistance programs and what their placement rates are. High and rapid placement rates are a good indication that the schools have sizable networks and great relationships with Pennsylvania healthcare employers. It also confirms that their graduates are well regarded and sought after.

Where is the College Located? For a lot of students, the school they choose will have to be within driving distance of their Middleport PA home. Students who have chosen to attend online classes obviously will not have to worry themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of local internships will be of importance. One thing to consider is that if you decide to enroll in a program that is out of state or perhaps out of your local area, you might have to pay a higher tuition. State colleges usually charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges frequently charge a higher tuition to those students that don’t reside within their districts.

How Big are the Classes ? Unless you are the type of person that prefers to sit way in the rear of the classroom or hide in the crowd, you will likely prefer a smaller class size. Small classes permit more individual participation and one-on-one instruction. Ask the colleges you are reviewing what the average teacher to student ratio is for their classes. If practical you may want to monitor one or more classes before making your final determination. This will also give you an opportunity to speak with several of the students and instructors to get their perspectives regarding the ultrasound tech program also.

Does the Program Accommodate your Schedule? And finally you must verify that the sonographer  college you ultimately select can provide the class schedule you need. This is particularly crucial if you decide to continue working while attending classes. If you must schedule night or weekend classes in the Middleport PA area, verify that they are offered. If you can only enroll on a part-time basis, find out if that is an option and how many credit hours or courses you would have to carry. Also, find out what the protocol is for making up any classes that you might miss due to illness, work or family emergencies.
