Sonographer Work Summary

Myerstown PA ultrasound tech with patientThere are multiple acceptable titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also called ultrasound technologists, sonogram techs, and diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers). No matter what their title is, they all have the same primary job description, which is to carry out diagnostic ultrasound techniques on patients. While a number of techs practice as generalists there are specialties within the profession, for instance in cardiology and pediatrics. Most work in Myerstown PA clinics, hospitals, outpatient diagnostic imaging centers and even private practices. Routine daily work functions of an ultrasound tech can involve:

  • Preserving records of patient medical histories and specifics of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Prepping the ultrasound machines for testing and then sterilizing and re-calibrating them
  • Escorting patients to treatment rooms and making them comfortable
  • Operating equipment while limiting patient exposure to sound waves
  • Assessing results and identifying necessity for further testing

Ultrasound techs must frequently evaluate the safety and performance of their equipment. They also must adhere to a high professional standard and code of conduct as health practitioners. So as to maintain that degree of professionalism and remain current with medical knowledge, they are mandated to enroll in continuing education training on a regular basis.

Ultrasound Technician Degrees Offered

Myerstown PA ultrasound technician performing sonographySonogram tech students have the opportunity to earn either an Associate or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will typically take about 18 months to 2 years to complete dependent on the course load and program. A Bachelor’s Degree will require more time at up to 4 years to finish. Another alternative for those who have already received a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have earned a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a relevant health sector, you can instead choose a certificate program that will take just 12 to 18 months to complete. One thing to keep in mind is that almost all ultrasound technician colleges do have a practical training component as a portion of their course of study. It often may be satisfied by taking part in an internship program which numerous schools sponsor with Myerstown PA clinics and hospitals. After you have graduated from one of the degree or certificate programs, you will then need to satisfy the licensing or certification requirements in Pennsylvania or whichever state you elect to practice in.

Ultrasound Technician Online Colleges

student attending online sonography class in Myerstown PAAs earlier discussed, almost all ultrasound technician schools have a clinical component to their programs. So although you can receive a certificate or degree online, a significant portion of the training will be either conducted in an on campus lab or at an approved off campus facility. Clinical training can usually be satisfied through an internship at a local Myerstown PA hospital, outpatient clinic or family practice. But the balance of the training and classes can be accessed online in your Myerstown home. This is particularly beneficial for those students that keep working while obtaining their degrees. In addition online programs are often more affordable than on campus options. Expenses for commuting and study materials can be lessened as well. But similarly as with any ultrasound tech program you are looking at, verify that the online school you ultimately pick is accredited. One of the most highly regarded accrediting agencies is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is particularly significant for certification, licensing and finding employment (more on accreditation later). So if you are dedicated enough to learn outside of the classroom in the convenience of your own home, then an online degree could be the ideal choice for you.

Topics to Ask Ultrasound Tech Colleges

Questions to ask Myerstown PA ultrasound technician schoolsAfter you have decided on the type of certificate or degree that you would like to obtain, you can begin the process of assessing and comparing sonogram tech schools. You will first probably want to choose whether you would rather attend classes online or travel to a college campus in the Myerstown PA area. Of course location will be important if you choose the latter, and the price of tuition no doubt will be an important qualifier as well. But there are additional factors that you should also take into account, such as if the programs are accredited and if they offer internship programs. So in order to carry out your due diligence so that you can arrive at your ultimate selection, below are some questions that you need ask each sonography school prior to making a decision.

Are the Sonogram Tech Colleges Accredited? The majority of sonogram tech schools have obtained some form of accreditation, whether regional or national. However, it’s still crucial to confirm that the school and program are accredited. Among the most highly respected accrediting organizations in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Schools obtaining accreditation from the JRC-DMS have gone through a detailed evaluation of their instructors and course materials. If the college is online it may also earn accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which focuses on online or distance education. All accrediting organizations should be recognized by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Besides guaranteeing a quality education, accreditation will also help in securing financial assistance and student loans, which are frequently not accessible for non-accredited schools. Accreditation might also be a pre-requisite for licensing and certification as required. And numerous Myerstown PA health facilities will only hire a graduate of an accredited college for entry level jobs.

Are Internship Programs Provided? Ask if the sonogram technician colleges you are evaluating have relationships with Myerstown PA clinics or hospitals for internship programs. Internships are not only an excellent means to receive hands on experience in a clinical setting, they are also a way to fulfill the practical training requirement for most programs. As an ancillary benefit, they may help students and graduates develop professional connections in the Myerstown healthcare community and help with obtaining employment.

Is Job Placement Help provided? You will undoubtedly wish to hit the ground running after graduation, but finding that initial job in a new profession can be challenging without support. Find out if the ultrasound tech schools you are assessing have job assistance programs and what their success rates are. Rapid and high placement rates are an excellent sign that the schools have sizable networks and great relationships with Pennsylvania healthcare employers. It also corroborates that their students are well regarded and in demand.

Where is the Program Located? For many students, the college they choose will have to be within commuting distance of their Myerstown PA residence. Students who have decided to attend online classes naturally will not have to concern themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of local internships will be of importance. One thing to bear in mind is that if you decide to enroll in a school that is out of state or even out of your local area, you may be required to pay a higher tuition. State colleges usually charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges usually charge a higher tuition for those students that live outside of their districts.

What Size are the Classes ? Unless you are the type of student that prefers to sit far in the rear of the classroom or get lost in the crowd, you will likely prefer a small class size. Smaller classes permit more individual participation and personalized instruction. Ask the schools you are reviewing what the typical teacher to student ratio is for their classrooms. If practical you may prefer to monitor one or more classes before making your final decision. This will also give you a chance to talk with a few of the instructors and students to get their perspectives regarding the ultrasound technician program as well.

Does the College Accommodate your Schedule? And finally you need to confirm that the sonographer  program you finally choose can provide the class schedule you need. This is especially crucial if you choose to continue working while attending school. If you must schedule night or weekend classes in the Myerstown PA area, confirm that they are available. If you can only enroll on a part-time basis, check if that is an option and how many courses or credit hours you would need to enroll in. Also, find out what the procedure is for making up any classes that you might miss due to illness, work or family obligations.

    Myerstown, Pennsylvania

Myerstown (Pennsylvania Dutch: Moyerschteddel) is a borough located in Lebanon County, Pennsylvania, United States. It is part of the Lebanon, PA Metropolitan Statistical Area. Myerstown has an estimated 2016 population of 3,183.[3] It is home to over 100 businesses, including a Bayer HealthCare manufacturing plant, Farmer Boy Ag, Stoneridge Towne Centre and Wengers of Myerstown. The Evangelical Seminary is located on South College Street.

On December 24, 1757, 249 acres (1.01 km2) of land was deeded to Isaac Meier and wife Catherine, who built their house at the Hergelrode site on South College Street. As early as 1763 he began deeding out lots and planned to make a town which he called Tulpehocken Town, after the Tulpehocken Creek, which runs through the borough.

Meier was fatally shot by an unknown assassin on July 14, 1770, at the Henry Buch House on 40 West Main Street which was a tavern at that time.[4] After his death the citizens of Tulpehocken Town began to call it Meier's Town after him.
