Narberth PA sonographer performing ultrasoundNow that you have decided to pursue an ultrasound technician degree near Narberth PA, it’s time to begin the procedure of picking a college. First, you must find the right program that will provide the appropriate instruction to become a skilled professional. So it’s extremely important that you investigate each program so that you can assess and compare your alternatives. But just where does one start? Most prospective students will start by searching for schools that are within commuting distance of their residences and then by comparing tuition. Of course cost and location should be considered when arriving at a decision, but there are other significant factors also. For example, if the ultrasound technician schools are accredited or if they sponsor internship programs. These and other qualifications will be addressed more in depth later in this post. But to start with, let’s go over what an ultrasound tech does and the degrees and online education options that are available.

Sonogram Tech Job Description

Narberth PA ultrasound tech with patientThere are various professional titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also referred to as ultrasound technologists, sonogram techs, and diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers). Regardless of name, they all have the same basic job function, which is to perform diagnostic ultrasound procedures on patients. While many work as generalists there are specialties within the field, for example in cardiology and pediatrics. The majority work in Narberth PA clinics, hospitals, outpatient diagnostic imaging centers and even private practices. Common daily work tasks of an ultrasound technician can include:

  • Keeping records of patient case histories and specifics of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Readying the ultrasound machines for use and then sterilizing and re-calibrating them
  • Escorting patients to treatment rooms and making them comfortable
  • Using equipment while minimizing patient exposure to sound waves
  • Assessing results and identifying need for further testing

Sonographers must frequently assess the performance and safety of their equipment. They also are held to a high ethical standard and code of conduct as medical practitioners. In order to sustain that degree of professionalism and stay up to date with medical knowledge, they are required to complete continuing education training on an ongoing basis.

Sonogram Technician Degree Programs Offered

Narberth PA ultrasound technician performing sonographyUltrasound technician enrollees have the option to acquire either an Associate or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will normally require about 18 months to 2 years to accomplish based upon the course load and program. A Bachelor’s Degree will take longer at up to four years to complete. Another option for those who have previously received a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have received a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a relevant health field, you can enroll in a certificate program that will take just 12 to 18 months to finish. One thing to consider is that most sonographer colleges do have a clinical training element as part of their curriculum. It can often be fulfilled by participating in an internship program which numerous colleges set up with Narberth PA clinics and hospitals. When you have graduated from any of the degree or certificate programs, you will then need to comply with the licensing or certification requirements in Pennsylvania or whatever state you choose to practice in.

Online Ultrasound Tech Colleges

student attending online sonography class in Narberth PAAs earlier discussed, virtually all ultrasound technician schools have a clinical requirement to their programs. So while you can earn a certificate or degree online, a substantial part of the training will be either held in an on-campus lab or at a sponsored off-campus facility. Clinical training can typically be satisfied by means of an internship at a local Narberth PA hospital, outpatient clinic or private practice. But the remainder of the classes and training may be accessed online in your Narberth home. This is particularly beneficial for those individuals that keep working while earning their degrees. Plus online colleges are often less expensive than traditional alternatives. Expenditures for study materials and commuting can be lessened as well. But similarly as with every ultrasound tech program you are looking at, make sure that the online program you ultimately pick is accredited. One of the most highly respected accrediting organizations is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is particularly crucial for certification, licensing and job placement (more on accreditation later). So if you are dedicated enough to attend classes away from the classroom in the comfort of your own home, then an online school could be the ideal choice for you.

Subjects to Ask Sonogram Tech Schools

Questions to ask Narberth PA ultrasound technician schoolsAs soon as you have determined the type of degree or certificate that you would like to earn, you can start the procedure of reviewing and comparing ultrasound technician colleges. You may first want to decide whether you will attend classes online or commute to a college campus in the Narberth PA area. Naturally location will be critical if you select the latter, and the price of tuition undoubtedly will be an initial qualification also. But there are additional factors that you should also take into consideration, for example if the colleges are accredited and if they sponsor internship programs. So in order to perform your due diligence so that you can arrive at your final selection, following are several questions that you need ask each ultrasound tech school prior to making a decision.

Are the Sonogram Tech Colleges Accredited? A large number of ultrasound tech colleges have acquired some type of accreditation, whether national or regional. Even so, it’s still crucial to confirm that the program and school are accredited. One of the most highly respected accrediting agencies in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Programs earning accreditation from the JRC-DMS have gone through a detailed examination of their teachers and course materials. If the college is online it might also obtain accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which focuses on online or distance learning. All accrediting organizations should be recognized by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Along with guaranteeing a premium education, accreditation will also assist in securing financial assistance and student loans, which are often not offered for non-accredited colleges. Accreditation can also be a pre-requisite for certification and licensing as required. And many Narberth PA health facilities will only hire a graduate of an accredited college for entry-level jobs.

Are Internships Provided? Inquire if the ultrasound technician schools you are reviewing have relationships with Narberth PA hospitals or clinics for internship programs. Internships are not only a terrific way to receive practical experience in a clinical setting, they are also a way to fulfill the practical training requirement for the majority of programs. As an ancillary benefit, they may help graduates and students form professional relationships in the Narberth medical community and assist with obtaining employment.

Is Job Placement Assistance offered? You will undoubtedly want to hit the ground running after graduating, but finding that first job in a new field can be difficult without support. Ask if the ultrasound tech programs you are assessing have job assistance programs and what their success rates are. Rapid and high placement rates are an excellent indication that the schools have sizable networks and good relationships with Pennsylvania healthcare employers. It also corroborates that their students are well regarded and sought after.

Where is the School Located? For a number of students, the school they decide on will have to be within travelling distance of their Narberth PA residence. Those who have chosen to attend classes online obviously will not have to trouble themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of area internships will be of concern. One thing to consider is that if you choose to enroll in a college that is out of state or even out of your local area, you might be required to pay a higher tuition. State colleges normally charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges frequently charge a higher tuition to those students that live outside of their districts.

What Size are the Classes ? Unless you are the kind of person that prefers to sit far in the back of the classroom or get lost in the crowd, you will undoubtedly want a small class size. Small classes permit more individual participation and one-on-one instruction. Ask the schools you are considering what the typical teacher to student ratio is for their classrooms. If practical you may want to monitor one or more classes before making your ultimate decision. This will also give you an opportunity to speak with some of the instructors and students to get their opinions regarding the ultrasound tech program also.

Does the School Accommodate your Schedule? And finally you need to verify that the sonographer  school you finally select can provide the class schedule you need. This is especially essential if you choose to continue working while attending classes. If you must schedule evening or weekend classes in the Narberth PA area, check that they are available. If you can only enroll on a part-time basis, check if that is an option and how many credit hours or courses you would have to enroll in. Also, ask what the protocol is for making up any classes that you may miss because of work, illness or family obligations.
