Sonographer Work Summary

Neffs PA ultrasound tech with patientThere are several acceptable titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also called ultrasound technologists, sonogram techs, and diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers). Regardless of name, they all have the same primary job function, which is to carry out diagnostic ultrasound procedures on patients. Even though many practice as generalists there are specialties within the field, for instance in pediatrics and cardiology. The majority practice in Neffs PA hospitals, clinics, private practices or outpatient diagnostic imaging centers. Common daily work duties of a sonogram tech may consist of:

  • Preserving records of patient case histories and details of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Readying the ultrasound machines for testing and then sterilizing and recalibrating them
  • Moving patients to treatment rooms and making them comfortable
  • Utilizing equipment while minimizing patient exposure to sound waves
  • Assessing results and determining necessity for supplemental testing

Sonographers must regularly gauge the safety and performance of their machines. They also must adhere to a high ethical standard and code of conduct as health practitioners. So as to sustain that level of professionalism and stay current with medical knowledge, they are required to enroll in continuing education programs on a regular basis.

Ultrasound Technician Degrees Offered

Neffs PA ultrasound technician performing sonographySonogram technician students have the choice to acquire either an Associate Degree or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will generally involve about 18 months to 2 years to accomplish depending on the course load and program. A Bachelor’s Degree will take longer at as long as four years to finish. Another alternative for those who have already earned a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have obtained a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a related health field, you can instead choose a certificate program that will require just 12 to 18 months to complete. One thing to consider is that the majority of sonographer programs do have a clinical training component as part of their course of study. It can often be fulfilled by taking part in an internship program which many colleges set up with Neffs PA clinics and hospitals. When you have graduated from one of the certificate or degree programs, you will then need to fulfill the licensing or certification requirements in Pennsylvania or whatever state you elect to practice in.

Online Sonogram Tech Programs

student attending online sonography class in Neffs PAAs previously mentioned, nearly all ultrasound technician schools have a practical requirement to their programs. So although you can receive a degree or certificate online, a significant part of the training will be either carried out in an on-campus laboratory or at a sponsored off-campus medical care provider. Practical training can often be fulfilled through an internship at a local Neffs PA outpatient clinic, hospital or family practice. However the rest of the training and classes can be attended online in your Neffs home. This is especially beneficial for those individuals that keep working while getting their degrees. Plus online schools are frequently less costly than on-campus alternatives. Expenditures for study materials and commuting can be decreased as well. But just as with any sonography school you are considering, verify that the online school you choose is accredited. Among the most highly regarded accrediting organizations is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is particularly significant for certification, licensing and job placement (more on accreditation later). So if you are disciplined enough to learn outside of the classroom in the convenience of your own home, then an online degree may be the ideal choice for you.

Points to Ask Sonography Programs

Questions to ask Neffs PA ultrasound technician schoolsWhen you have decided on the type of degree or certificate that you would like to earn, you can begin the procedure of evaluating and comparing sonogram tech schools. You will first probably want to choose whether you will access classes online or commute to a school campus in the Neffs PA area. Of course location will be significant if you choose the latter, and the cost of tuition undoubtedly will be an important qualifier as well. But there are additional factors that you must also take into consideration, for example if the schools are accredited and if they provide internships. Therefore in order to carry out your due diligence so that you can arrive at your final selection, following are a few questions that you may want to ask each sonography school prior to making a decision.

Are the Ultrasound Tech Colleges Accredited? A large number of ultrasound technician colleges have acquired some form of accreditation, whether regional or national. Even so, it’s still crucial to make sure that the program and school are accredited. Among the most highly regarded accrediting agencies in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Programs obtaining accreditation from the JRC-DMS have undergone a rigorous examination of their instructors and educational materials. If the college is online it may also earn accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which targets distance or online education. All accrediting agencies should be acknowledged by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. In addition to guaranteeing a superior education, accreditation will also assist in acquiring financial assistance and student loans, which are many times not available for non-accredited programs. Accreditation may also be a pre-requisite for certification and licensing as required. And many Neffs PA employers will only hire graduates of an accredited college for entry-level openings.

Are Internships Offered? Inquire if the sonogram tech schools you are interested in have relationships with Neffs PA clinics or hospitals for internship programs. Internships are not only a terrific manner to obtain practical experience in a clinical setting, they are also a way to fulfill the clinical training requirement for the majority of programs. As a supplemental benefit, they may assist students and graduates establish professional relationships in the Neffs medical community and assist with obtaining employment.

Is Job Placement Assistance provided? You will probably wish to secure employment quickly after graduating, but getting that first job in a new field can be difficult without support. Find out if the sonographer programs you are interviewing have job placement programs and what their success rates are. Rapid and high placement rates are a good sign that the schools have substantial networks and great relationships with Pennsylvania healthcare employers. It also confirms that their students are well regarded and in demand.

Where is the School Located? For a lot of students, the school they decide on will have to be within commuting distance of their Neffs PA residence. Those who have decided to attend online classes naturally will not have to trouble themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of local internships will be of concern. Something to consider is that if you decide to enroll in a college that is out of state or even out of your local area, you may be required to pay a higher tuition. State colleges typically charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges typically charge a higher tuition to those students that don’t reside within their districts.

What are the Class Sizes ? Unless you are the type of person that prefers to sit far in the rear of the classroom or get lost in the crowd, you will probably prefer a small class size. Smaller classes allow for more individual participation and one-on-one instruction. Ask the schools you are researching what the typical student to teacher ratio is for their classes. If practical you may want to monitor one or more classes before making your ultimate determination. This will also give you a chance to converse with some of the instructors and students to get their opinions regarding the ultrasound tech program as well.

Can the Program Accommodate your Schedule? And finally you need to verify that the ultrasound tech  college you finally pick can furnish the class schedule you need. This is particularly important if you decide to continue working while you attend school. If you must schedule evening or weekend classes in the Neffs PA area, confirm that they are offered. If you can only enroll on a part-time basis, verify if that is an alternative and how many courses or credit hours you would have to enroll in. Also, learn what the procedure is for making up any classes that you might miss due to illness, work or family obligations.

    Neffs, Pennsylvania

Neffs is a small village located mainly in North Whitehall Township but also in Washington Township in Lehigh County, Pennsylvania, United States. Neffs is located at the junction of Pennsylvania Routes 873 and 329, about one mile north of Schnecksville.

Historically, the town was called Unionville after the Union Church that was established there in 1797. The town's first store was built in 1815. The current town name honors Abraham Neff, first postmaster of the Neffs post office. Abraham Neff laid out the village while running a coach business and local hotel. The area then became "Neffsville", a name that was later shortened to "Neffs".

The current-day Neffs post office was built in 1967. At that time the first non-agricultural manufacturing plant was built in Neffs by Ted Ambrosino, who established Ambro Fashions. The town was so concerned about the influx of additional mail and post office activity that it applied for and won a federal grant to build an upgraded modern post office facility.
