New Kingstown PA sonographer performing ultrasoundOnce you have made a decision to obtain an ultrasound technician degree near New Kingstown PA, it’s time to start the procedure of choosing a school. First, you must find the ideal program that will furnish the necessary training to become a skilled professional. And because some states do mandate that ultrasound techs be either licensed or certified, depending on where you will practice you may also need to be prepared to pass a licensing or certification exam. So it’s extremely important that you research each school in order to evaluate and compare your choices. But just where does one start? Many students will start by searching for schools that are within commuting distance of their homes and then by comparing tuition. Of course cost and location must be considered when making a decision, but there are other important factors as well. For example, if the ultrasound technician schools are accredited or if they provide internships. These and other qualifiers will be covered more in depth later in this article. But first, let’s review what an ultrasound tech does and the degrees and online training options that are offered.

Ultrasound Technician Occupation Description

New Kingstown PA ultrasound tech with patientThere are several professional titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also referred to as sonogram techs, diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers) and ultrasound technologists. No matter what their title is, they all have the same basic job description, which is to perform diagnostic ultrasound procedures on patients. While many work as generalists there are specializations within the profession, for instance in pediatrics and cardiology. Most work in New Kingstown PA clinics, hospitals, private practices or outpatient diagnostic imaging centers. Common daily job duties of an ultrasound tech may involve:

  • Preserving records of patient case histories and details of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Readying the ultrasound machines for usage and then sterilizing and recalibrating them
  • Escorting patients to treatment rooms and making them comfortable
  • Operating equipment while limiting patient exposure to sound waves
  • Assessing results and identifying necessity for additional testing

Sonographers must regularly evaluate the performance and safety of their machines. They also are held to a high ethical standard and code of conduct as medical practitioners. So as to maintain that degree of professionalism and remain current with medical knowledge, they are required to complete continuing education programs on a regular basis.

Sonogram Technician Degrees Offered

New Kingstown PA ultrasound technician performing sonographySonogram tech enrollees have the opportunity to earn either an Associate Degree or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will usually take about 18 months to 2 years to complete dependent on the program and class load. A Bachelor’s Degree will require more time at up to four years to finish. Another option for individuals who have previously received a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have earned a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a relevant medical sector, you can enroll in a certificate program that will take just 12 to 18 months to finish. Something to bear in mind is that most sonographer schools do have a practical training component as a portion of their course of study. It can often be satisfied by participating in an internship program which many colleges set up with New Kingstown PA hospitals and clinics. Once you have graduated from any of the degree or certificate programs, you will then have to fulfill the licensing or certification requirements in Pennsylvania or whichever state you choose to practice in.

Online Sonogram Tech Programs

student attending online sonography class in New Kingstown PAAs aforementioned, virtually all ultrasound technician schools have a practical component to their programs. So although you can receive a certificate or degree online, a significant part of the training will be either conducted in an on campus laboratory or at an approved off campus facility. Practical training can usually be satisfied by means of an internship at a local New Kingstown PA hospital, outpatient clinic or private practice. But the remainder of the training and classes can be attended online in your New Kingstown home. This is especially beneficial for those individuals that keep working while earning their degrees. Plus online colleges are frequently less costly than traditional options. Expenses for commuting and study materials can be lessened as well. But just as with every sonography program you are considering, confirm that the online program you select is accredited. One of the most highly respected accrediting agencies is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is particularly significant for certification, licensing and job placement (more on accreditation later). So if you are motivated enough to attend classes away from the classroom in the comfort of your own home, then online classes may be the ideal option for you.

What to Ask Sonogram Tech Schools

Questions to ask New Kingstown PA ultrasound technician schoolsNow that you have decided on the type of degree or certificate that you would like to obtain, you can initiate the procedure of reviewing and comparing ultrasound tech colleges. You will first probably want to choose whether you will attend classes online or travel to a college campus in the New Kingstown PA area. Certainly location will be significant if you decide on the latter, and the cost of tuition undoubtedly will be an initial qualifier as well. But there are other things that you should also take into account, for instance if the programs are accredited and if they provide internship programs. So in order to complete your due diligence so that you can arrive at your final selection, below are a few questions that you may want to ask each sonography school prior to making a decision.

Are the Ultrasound Tech Programs Accredited? Most sonogram technician schools have received some form of accreditation, whether regional or national. Even so, it’s still crucial to confirm that the program and school are accredited. Among the most highly respected accrediting organizations in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Schools earning accreditation from the JRC-DMS have gone through an extensive review of their teachers and course materials. If the program is online it may also obtain accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which focuses on online or distance education. All accrediting organizations should be recognized by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Along with guaranteeing a premium education, accreditation will also assist in getting financial assistance and student loans, which are often not available for non-accredited colleges. Accreditation may also be a pre-requisite for certification and licensing as required. And numerous New Kingstown PA health facilities will only hire a graduate of an accredited school for entry-level openings.

Are Internship Programs Provided? Ask if the sonogram technician colleges you are reviewing have relationships with New Kingstown PA hospitals or clinics for internship programs. Internships are not only a terrific means to receive hands on training in a clinical environment, they are also a way to fulfill the practical training requirement for the majority of programs. As an ancillary benefit, they may help graduates and students establish professional relationships in the New Kingstown healthcare community and help with job placement.

Is Job Placement Help offered? You will probably wish to hit the ground running after graduating, but finding that first job in a new field can be difficult without support. Find out if the ultrasound tech schools you are interviewing have job assistance programs and what their placement rates are. High and rapid placement rates are a good sign that the schools have sizable networks and great relationships with Pennsylvania healthcare employers. It also confirms that their graduates are highly regarded and sought after.

Where is the College Located? For many students, the school they choose will have to be within commuting distance of their New Kingstown PA residence. Those who have decided to attend classes online obviously will not have to trouble themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of local internships will be of concern. Something to keep in mind is that if you choose to enroll in a program that is out of state or even out of your local area, you may need to pay a higher tuition. State colleges normally charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges normally charge a higher tuition for those students that don’t reside within their districts.

What are the Class Sizes ? Unless you are the type of person that likes to sit way in the rear of class or get lost in the crowd, you will undoubtedly want a smaller class size. Small classes allow for more individual participation and one-on-one instruction. Ask the schools you are researching what the typical student to teacher ratio is for their classes. If practical you may prefer to monitor one or more classes before making your ultimate determination. This will also give you an opportunity to speak with some of the instructors and students to get their perspectives regarding the sonogram tech program as well.

Does the School Accommodate your Schedule? And finally you must verify that the ultrasound tech  college you finally choose can provide the class schedule you need. This is especially important if you decide to continue working while attending school. If you need to schedule night or weekend classes in the New Kingstown PA area, confirm that they are available. If you can only enroll on a part-time basis, find out if that is an alternative and how many credit hours or courses you would need to enroll in. Also, ask what the procedure is for making up any classes that you may miss as a result of work, illness or family obligations.
